Influence of soil chemical composition on U, 226Ra and 210Pb uptake in leaves and fruits of Quercus ilex L

To determine their transfer factors, activity concentrations of natural radionuclides were measured in the leaves and acorns of holm oak (Quercus ilex L.) trees collected from seven locations with different soil properties and radionuclide activity concentrations. The chemical and mineralogical compositions of the soils were also analysed to investigate the effect these had on radionuclide absorption by the trees. Soil chemistry showed significant effects on radionuclide incorporation into Quercus ilex L. tissues. A significant relationship was established between activity concentrations and soil content of Ca and P with ²³⁸U and ²²⁶Ra in the leaves and acorns of Quercus ilex L. Differentiated transfer was found for ⁴⁰K, which showed greater transfer to the leaves than the other radionuclides. The activity concentration of U and ²²⁶Ra was higher in the fruits than in the leaves, with the opposite effect being observed for ⁴⁰K. The risk of U and ²²⁶Ra transfer into the food chain through acorn consumption by livestock is predicted to increase in soils poor in Ca and rich in P.

Dynamic Adsorption Characteristics of Cr(VI) in Red-Mud Leachate onto a Red Clay Anti-Seepage Layer

Red-mud leachate from tailings ponds contains Cr(VI), which can pollute groundwater via infiltration through anti-seepage layers. This paper investigates leachate from a red-mud tailings pond in southwest China and the red clay in the surrounding area to simulate the adsorption of Cr(VI) onto clay at different pHs, using geochemical equilibrium software (Visual MINTEQ). We also performed dynamic adsorption testing of Cr(VI) on a clay anti-seepage layer. The dynamic adsorption behaviors and patterns in the dynamic column were predicted using the Thomas and Yoon-Nelson models. Visual MINTEQ predicted that Cr(VI) adsorption in red-mud leachate onto clay was 69.91%, increasing gradually with pH, i.e., adsorption increased under alkaline conditions. Cr(VI) concentration in the effluent was measured using the permeability test through a flexible permeameter when the adsorption saturation time reached 146 days. At a low seepage rate, Cr(VI) adsorption onto the clay anti-seepage layer took longer. Saturation adsorption capacity, q₀, and adsorption rate constant, K_th, were determined using the Thomas model; the Yoon-Nelson model was used to determine when the effluent Cr(VI) concentration reached 50% of the initial concentration. The results provide parameters for the design and pollution prediction of the clay anti-seepage layer of red-mud tailings ponds.

Transcriptomic and Metabolomic Analyses Reveal the Differential Regulatory Mechanisms of Compound Material on the Responses of Brassica campestris to Saline and Alkaline Stresses

Oilseed rape not only has the function of improve saline and alkaline soils, but also alleviate the local feed shortage. However, medium- and high-degree soil salinization and alkalinization always inhibit the growth of oilseed rape. Studies have shown that compound material can improve the tolerance to saline and alkaline stress of crops, but the difference in the regulation mechanism of compound material on oilseed rape in saline and alkaline soils is not clear. This study explored the difference through determining the leaf ion contents, physiological indexes, transcriptomics, and metabolomics of oilseed rape in salinized soil (NaCl 8 g kg^-1) and alkalinized soil (Na₂CO₃ 8 g kg^-1) at full flowering stage, respectively after the application of compound material. The results showed that in salinized and alkalinized soil, the compound material upregulated the genes related to the regulation of potassium ion transport, and changed the amino acid metabolic pathway, which reduced the contents of Na⁺, malondialdehyde (MDA), and relative conductivity (REC) in leaves, and increased the contents of K⁺ and Mg²⁺ and the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT). However, there were differences in the regulation mechanism of compound material in salinized and alkalinized soil. In salinized soil, the compound material improved the tolerance of oilseed rape to saline stress by upregulating transcription factors mannose-1-phosphate guanylyltransferase (GPMM) and Glutamine--fructose-6-phosphate transaminase (GFPT) and downregulating phosphomannomutase (PMM) to change nucleotide metabolism pathway and lipid metabolism pathway. In alkalized soil, the compound material improved the tolerance of oilseed rape to alkaline stress by upregulating transcription factors Phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) to change the biosynthesis pathway of other secondary metabolites. Therefore, the compound material can improve the tolerance of oilseed rape to saline and alkaline stress by regulating the genetic adaptability and apparent plasticity, but the mechanisms were different. This study provides a practical method for the ecological environment restoration and the development of animal husbandry.

Investigating the selectivity and interference behavior for detoxification of Cr(VI) using lanthanum phosphate polyaniline nanocomposite via adsorption-reduction mechanism

A novel Lanthanum phosphate polyaniline (LaPO₄-PANI) nanocomposite was synthesized by the simple sol-gel technique. The nanocomposite prepared at 1:1 ratio provided the highest ion exchange capacity and selective adsorption of Cr(VI). The phase composition and particle morphology of the as-prepared material was evaluated by XRD, FESEM and TEM analyses. The FTIR, Raman, and TGA data inferred the definite chemical interaction between the organic and inorganic counterparts in the formation of LaPO₄-PANI. The selective adsorption of Cr(VI) was estimated by evaluating the distribution coefficient, electrical double layer theory as well as valency and Pauling's ionic radii of interfering ions (phosphate, iodide, sulfate, chloride, sulfide). The high tolerance capability of LaPO₄-PANI against the interfering ions made it appropriate for selective and efficient removal of Cr(VI) ions from solutions. The nanocomposite showed the highest removal percentage of 98.6% towards Cr(VI) in a wide pH range of 2-6 at room temperature, as compared to sole lanthanum phosphate (56%) and polyaniline (75%). The XPS analysis revealed the adsorption mechanism due to the combined effect of both adsorption and reduction. Cr(VI) is adsorbed through electrostatic interactions while the = N-/-NH- group facilitated the in situ chemical reduction. The procured results make the LaPO₄-PANI nanocomposite a promising adsorbent for the removal of Cr(VI).

Adsorption of U(VI) on the natural soil around a very low-level waste repository

The behaviors of U(VI) in environmental media around radioactive waste disposal site are important for safety assessment of geological repositories. However, the estimation of environmental behaviors of U(VI) in natural media was insufficient. This work aimed to determine the adsorption of U(VI) on natural soil surrounding a candidate very low-level radioactive waste (VLLW) disposal site in southwest China. Results showed that the adsorption process of U(VI) on soils could be well supported by pseudo-second-order kinetic and Freundlich model. The adsorption of U(VI) was pH-dependent but temperature-independent. High ionic strength (NaCl) strongly affected the adsorption process at low pH (2.0-5.5). CO₃^2- remarkably inhibited the U(VI) adsorption, while the adsorption of U(VI) was promoted by PO₄^3- and SO₄^2-. Naturally occurred soil organic matters (SOMs) showed high affinity for U(VI), while the presence of additional humic acid (HA) strongly inhibited U(VI) adsorption. The occurrence of ferrous iron could result in the reduction of U(VI) at low pH values (pH < 4), leading to the promotion of immobilization of U(VI). These findings would provide some guidance for the safety assessments of the VLLW disposal as well as the remediation of contaminated soil.

Simulating uranium sorption onto inorganic particles: The effect of redox potential

An analytical expression is proposed to simulate the effects of pH and redox potential (E) on the sorption of uranium onto model inorganic particles in aquatic environments instead of following an experimental approach providing a list of empirical sorption data. The expression provides a distribution coefficient (Kd) as function of pH, E and ligand concentration (complex formation) applying a surface complexation model on one type of surface sites (>SuOH). The formulation makes use of the complexation and hydrolysis constants for all species in solution and those sorbed at the surface, using correlations between hydrolysis constants and surface complexation constants, for the specific sorption sites. The model was applied for the sorption of uranium onto aluminol, iron hydroxide and silanol sites, mimicking respectively 'clean' clay or 'dirty' clay and 'clean' sand or 'dirty' sand ('dirty' referring to iron hydroxide contaminated), in absence or presence of carbonates in solution. The calculated distribution coefficients are very sensitive with the presence or absence of carbonates. The Kd values obtained by applying the model are compared with values reported in the literature for the sorption of uranium onto specific adsorbents. It is known that in surface water, U(VI) and its hydroxides are the primary stable species usually observed. However, reduction to U(IV) is possible and may be simulated during sorption or when the redox potential (E) decreases. Similar simulations are also applicable to study the sorption of other redox sensitive elements.
