The effect of polar head group of dodecyl surfactants on the growth of wheat and cucumber

Self-assembly of differently charged trimesic based lithocholic amphiphiles and their assessment on antimicrobial and biostimulant properties

Biosurfactant based biostimulants plays a vital role in agriculture filed by enhancing the soil quality, promote plant growth, and eliminate plant pathogens, and increasing nutrient uptake. This manuscript describes the synthesis of trimesic based lithocholic ester functionalized amphiphiles (TMLCEA) with oppositely charged head groups using thiol-yne click chemistry, which is an effective and simple approach. The trimesic based lithocholic ester functionalized zwitterionic penicillamine (TMLCEPA), cationic cysteamine·HCl (TMLCECy), and anionic thiomalic acid (TMLCETM) exhibited hierarchically self-assembled microstructures from below to above the CMC. In below the CMC, TMLCEPA, TMLCECy, and TMLCETM showed a bundle of petals, flower-like morphology, and grass seed-like patterns respectively. The morphology of self-assembly was studied by FE-SEM, DLS, OPM, contact angle, and zeta potential measurements. Among these amphiphiles, TMLCECy exhibited potential antimicrobial activity at above the CMC. The biostimulant effect of different concentration of TMLCEA treated with maize and green gram seeds were evaluated under in vitro condition, wherein TMLCECy showed improved seed germination and seedling parameters at 750 µL/mL as compared to TMLCEPA, TMLCETM and untreated amphiphiles as control. Molecular docking and molecular dynamic simulations show that TMLCEPA and TMLCETM showed higher binding affinity for dengue methyltransferase protein. The result of the present study opens up new avenues for bile acid-based amphiphiles as bio-based and cost-effective biostimulants for sustainable agriculture.

Hydrogen peroxide pretreatment assisted phytoremediation of sodium dodecyl sulfate by Juncus acutus L

BACKGROUND

Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate (SDS) an anionic surfactant pollutant has emerged as a serious hazard to the aquatic and terrestrial environment. Due to physical and chemical methodological difficulties for SDS removal, phytoremediation techniques are efficient alternative strategies to tackle such adversities. Juncus acutus L. (J. acutus) is a pioneer wetland species that has been recently exploited for phytoremediation purposes. To our knowledge, the role of exogenous hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), in improving the phytoextraction of SDS has not been examined yet. In this study, pretreatment foliar spray of H₂O₂ (15 mM) combined with two levels of SDS (50 and 100 ppm) in water culture was evaluated to remove SDS contamination and add value to the phytoremediation process.

RESULTS

The outcomes revealed that J. acutus has considerable translocation and bioaccumulation abilities for SDS and can be utilized as an appropriate hyperaccumulator in SDS-contaminated sites. However, the involvement of H₂O₂ extended phytoremediation capacity and successive removal of SDS. H₂O₂ significantly assisted in increasing SDS remediation via more accumulation in J. acutus tissues by 29.9 and 112.4% and decreasing SDS concentration in culture media by 33.3 and 27.3% at 50 and 100 ppm SDS, respectively. Bioaccumulation factor (BCF) increased by 13.8 and 13.2%, while translocation factor (TCF) positively maximized by 82.4 and 76.2% by H₂O₂ application at 50 and 100 ppm SDS, respectively. H₂O₂ pretreatment could drive the decline in biochemical attributes in SDS-affected plants by modulating stress tolerance indices, pigments, water relations, proline content, enzymatic activities, and further, reduced oxidative stress in terms of electrolyte leakage, cellular H₂O₂, malondialdehyde (MDA) accumulation.

CONCLUSIONS

H₂O₂ could play a potential role in maximizing phytoremediation capacity of SDS by J. acutus in polluted sites.

Fabrication and In Vitro/Vivo Evaluation of Drug Nanocrystals Self-Stabilized Pickering Emulsion for Oral Delivery of Quercetin

The aim of this study was to develop a new drug nanocrystals self-stabilized Pickering emulsion (NSSPE) for improving oral bioavailability of quercetin (QT). Quercetin nanocrystal (QT–NC) was fabricated by high pressure homogenization method, and QT–NSSPE was then prepared by ultrasound method with QT–NC as solid particle stabilizer and optimized by Box-Behnken design. The optimized QT–NSSPE was characterized by fluorescence microscope (FM), scanning electron micrograph (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The stability, in vitro release, and in vivo oral bioavailability of QT–NSSPE were also investigated. Results showed that the droplets of QT–NSSPE with the size of 10.29 ± 0.44 μm exhibited a core-shell structure consisting of a core of oil and a shell of QT–NC. QT–NSSPE has shown a great stability in droplets shape, size, creaming index, zeta potential, and QT content during 30 days storage at 4, 25, and 40 °C. In vitro release studies showed that QT–NSSPE performed a better dissolution behavior (65.88% within 24 h) as compared to QT–NC (50.71%) and QT coarse powder (20.15%). After oral administration, the AUC_0–t of QT–NSSPE was increased by 2.76-times and 1.38 times compared with QT coarse powder and QT–NC. It could be concluded that NSSPE is a promising oral delivery system for improving the oral bioavailability of QT.

Review of the toxic effects of ionic liquids

Interest in ionic liquids (ILs), called green or designer solvents, has been increasing because of their excellent properties such as thermal stability and low vapor pressure; thus, they can replace harmful organic chemicals and help several industrial fields e.g., energy-storage materials production and biomaterial pretreatment. However, the claim that ILs are green solvents should be carefully considered from an environmental perspective. ILs, given their minimal vapor pressure, may not directly cause atmospheric pollution. However, they have the potential to cause adverse effects if leaked into the environment, for instance if they are spilled due to human mistakes or technical errors. To estimate the risks of ILs, numerous ILs have had their toxicity assessed toward several micro- and macro-organisms over the past few decades. Since the toxic effects of ILs depend on the method of estimating toxicity, it is necessary to briefly summarize and comprehensively discuss the biological effects of ILs according to their structure and toxicity testing levels. This can help simplify our understanding of the toxicity of ILs. Therefore, in this review, we discuss the key findings of toxicological information of ILs, collect some toxicity data of ILs to different species, and explain the influence of IL structure on their toxic properties. In the discussion, we estimated two different sensitivity values of toxicity testing levels depending on the experiment condition, which are theoretical magnitudes of the inherent sensitivity of toxicity testing levels in various conditions and their changes in biological response according to the change in IL structure. Finally, some perspectives, future research directions, and limitations to toxicological research of ILs, presented so far, are discussed.
