Ammonium-based aeration control improves nitrogen removal efficiency and reduces N2O emissions for partial nitritation-anammox reactors

An enriched ammonia-oxidizing microbiota enables high removal efficiency of ammonia in antibiotic production wastewater

High ammonia concentration hinders the efficient treatment of antibiotic production wastewater (APW). Developing effective ammonia oxidation wastewater treatment strategies is an ideal approach for facilitating APW treatment. Compared with traditional nitrification strategies, the partial nitrification process is more eco-friendly, less energy-intensive, and less excess sludge. The primary limiting factor of the partial nitrification process is increasing ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) while decreasing nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB). In this study, an efficient AOB microbiota (named AF2) was obtained via enrichment of an aerobic activated sludge (AS0) collected from a pharmaceutical wastewater treatment plant. After a 52-day enrichment of AS0 in 250 mL flasks, the microbiota AE1 with 69.18% Nitrosomonas microorganisms was obtained. Subsequent scaled-up cultivation in a 10 L fermenter led to the AF2 microbiota with 59.22% Nitrosomonas. Low concentration of free ammonia (FA, < 42.01 mg L^-1) had a negligible effect on the activity of AF2, and the nitrite-nitrogen accumulation rate (NAR) of AF2 was 98% when FA concentration was 42.01 mg L^-1. The specific ammonia oxidation rates (SAORs) at 30 °C and 15 °C were 3.64 kg NH₄⁺-N·kg MLVSS^-1·d^-1 and 1.43 kg NH₄⁺-N·kg MLVSS^-1·d^-1 (MLVSS: mixed liquor volatile suspended solids). The SAOR was 0.52 kg NH₄⁺-N·kg MLVSS^-1·d^-1 when the NaCl concentration was increased from 0 to 20 g L^-1, showing that AF2 functioning was stable in a high-level salt environment. The ammonia oxidation performance of AF2 was verified by treating abamectin and lincomycin production wastewater. The NARs of AF2 used for abamectin and lincomycin production wastewater treatment were >90% and the SAORs were 2.39 kg NH₄⁺-N·kg MLVSS^-1·d^-1 and 0.54 kg NH₄⁺-N·kg MLVSS^-1·d^-1, respectively, which was higher than the traditional biological denitrification process. In summary, AF2 was effective for APW treatment via enhanced ammonia removal efficiency, demonstrating great potential for future industrial wastewater treatment.

Impact of organics, aeration and flocs on N2O emissions during granular-based partial nitritation-anammox

Partial nitration-anammox is a resource-efficient technology for nitrogen removal from wastewater. However, the advantages of this nitrogen removal technology are challenged by the emission of N₂O, a potent greenhouse gas. In this study, a granular sludge one-stage partial nitritation-anammox reactor comprising granules and flocs was run for 337 days in the presence of influent organics to investigate its effect on N removal and N₂O emissions. Besides, the effect of aeration control strategies and flocs removal was investigated as well. The interpretation of the experimental results was complemented with modelling and simulation. The presence of influent organics (1 g COD g^-1 N) helped to suppress NOB and significantly reduced the overall N₂O emissions while having no significant effect on anammox activity. Besides, long-term monitoring of the reactor indicated that constant airflow rate control resulted in more stable effluent quality and less N₂O emissions than DO control. Still, floc removal reduced N₂O emissions at DO control but increased N₂O emissions at constant airflow rate. Furthermore, anammox bacteria could significantly reduce N₂O production during heterotrophic denitrification, likely via competition for NO with heterotrophs. Overall, this study demonstrated that the presence of influent organics together with proper aeration control strategies and floc management could significantly reduce the N₂O emissions without compromising nitrogen removal efficiency during one-stage partial nitritation-anammox processes.

Two Decades of Experience with the Granular Sludge-Based ANAMMOX® Process Treating Municipal and Industrial Effluents

This paper is a review of 20 years of full-scale experience with the granular sludge-based ANAMMOX process. The ANAMMOX process is a biological deammonification process for energy-efficient removal of ammoniacal nitrogen, which has been successfully applied on dewatering reject liquors from biosolids sludge digesters (e.g., mesophilic anaerobic digestions, codigestion, thermal sludge hydrolysis process (THP)) and nutrient-rich anaerobically treated industrial effluents (e.g., fermentation industry, food industry). The ANAMMOX process is a continuously operated biological process using granular biomass. The highly active concentrated granular biomass allows for compact reactor systems and a fast start-up. Long term operations of various case studies show stable process performance of full-scale reactors treating municipal and industrial effluents, achieving ammoniacal nitrogen (NH4-N) removal in excess of 90% at low and high loading rates up to 2.5 kgNH4-N/(m3·d). Some special aspects (e.g., micro-nutrients, inhibition, alkalinity consumption) of treating various wastewaters are discussed in detail. The ANAMMOX process is demonstrated to be resilient in handling process upsets and off-spec wastewater composition.
