Mathematical modeling and numerical simulation of sulfamethoxazole adsorption onto sugarcane bagasse in a fixed-bed column

Adsorption of tetracycline by polycationic straw: Density functional theory calculation for mechanism and machine learning prediction for tetracyclines' remediation

The abuse of antibiotics causes serious environmental pollution, whose removal has become a hot topic. The adsorption of tetracycline (TC) on a prepared polycationic straw (MMS) was investigated. The kinetic, thermodynamic and adsorption isotherm models showed that adsorption of TC by MMS was a spontaneous, monolayer reaction with coexistence of physical and chemical process. Density functional theory indicated that the adsorption of TC resulted from electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonds, which proved the mechanism of TC by macromolecular biomass for the first time. The expected and empirical values of TC adsorption showed a high fit degree, through predication of machine learning, indicating the feasibility and avoiding lots of experiments. Further, the adsorption ability of MMS to other TCs was predicted, founding that the highest removal efficiency was doxycycline, which provides a novel strategy for removal of other pollution and reduce of economic and time cost in practical application.

Discriminative Dissolution Method Using the Open-Loop Configuration of the USP IV Apparatus to Compare Dissolution Profiles of Metoprolol Tartrate Immediate-Release Tablets: Use of Kinetic Parameters

The use of the USP IV apparatus (flow-through cell) has gained acceptance in recent years due to its versatility and ability to discriminate due to its hydrodynamic conditions. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to develop a discriminative dissolution method in the USP IV apparatus using the open-loop configuration, as well as to propose a method to compare non-cumulative dissolution profiles obtained in the open-loop configuration considering kinetic parameters and validate its predictive power through its comparison with independent and dependent methods using five commercial immediate-release tablet drugs (one reference drug and four generic drugs) of metoprolol tartrate as a model drug. The comparison of the non-accumulated dissolution profiles consisted of determining the geometric ratio of Cmax, AUC0∞, AUC0Cmax, and Tmax (kinetic parameters) of the generic/reference drugs, whereby generic drugs "C" and "D" presented the highest probability of similarity since their 90% confidence intervals were included, or they were very close to the acceptance interval (80.00-125.00%). These results were consistent with the f2, bootstrap f2, and dissolution efficiency approaches (independent models). In conclusion, the proposed comparison method can be an important tool to establish similarity in dissolution profiles and to facilitate the development/selection of new formulations and positively ensure bioequivalence in clinical studies.

Performance assessment of the MOF adsorbent MIL-101 for removal of gaseous benzene and toluene: kinetic column modeling and simulation studies of fixed-bed adsorption

The adsorbent MIL-101, a metal-organic framework material, was synthesized, characterized, and tested for removal of relatively low concentrations of benzene and toluene adsorbates (200 ppm) from a gas phase in a continuous flow system. Breakthrough studies were modeled based on Thomas, Yoon-Nelson, Yan, Clark, Bohart-Adams, bed-depth service time, modified dose response, Wolborska, and Gompertz in the continuous fixed-bed operation. Through statistical analysis, it was determined which type of regression is most suitable for the studied models, linear or nonlinear. By comparing the values of error functions, it was possible to infer that the Thomas model is the best match for the experimental breakthrough curves for benzene (with maximum solid-phase concentration qT=126,750 mg/g) and the Gompertz model for toluene (parameter β=0.01 min-1). Overall, when compared to the model parameters of the linear regression, those obtained through nonlinear regression show a stronger correlation with the results found experimentally. Thus, this type of regression is more suitable for the adsorption model analysis. The liquid film and intraparticle diffusion analysis was described, and it was suggested that both types of diffusion contribute to the adsorption mechanism of benzene and toluene on MIL-101. As for the isotherms, the adsorption process was better fitted by the Freundlich isotherm. The reusability of MIL-101 after six cycles was 76.5% for benzene and 62.4% for toluene, indicating that MIL-101 was a better adsorbent for the removal of benzene in comparison with toluene.

A model for the adsorption process of water dissolved elements flowing into reactive porous media: Characterization and sizing of water mining/filtering systems

This study presents a mathematical model describing the adsorption-desorption process of water dissolved elements onto reactive porous materials during filtering operations performed under dynamic flow conditions. The developed model is based on a reversible second order adsorption kinetic featuring the progressive reduction of the purifying capacity of the filtering material due to the gradual exhaustion of the active sites available for solute retention. It enables the simulation of the performances of water filtering systems through the use of parameters having a clear chemical-physical significance or it can be used for the estimation of these parameters to characterize the adsorption properties of the reactive material. Starting from the same adsorptive conceptual model used for the filtering system marked by ongoing flowing conditions, an adaptation for static systems was performed on the mathematical framework in order to process the same chemical physical parameters in both schemes. Adsorption laboratory tests were carried out to validate the developed model. Results show that the kinetic constants and adsorption capacities (a maximum of about 45 mg g^-1 was obtained for the tested material) are highly comparable, both within the same experimental system, and between different experimental setup. This confirms the validity of the developed model which is able to perfectly fit the observed concentration data in all tested configurations.

Removal of boron by a modified resin in fixed bed column: Breakthrough curve analysis using dynamic adsorption models and artificial neural network model

Continuous removal of toxic element boron from aqueous solution was investigated with new phenolic hydroxyl modified resin (T-resin) using a fixed bed column reactor operated under various flow rates, bed height and influent concentrations. The breakthrough time, exhaustion time and uptake capacity of the column bed increased with increasing column bed height, whereas decreased with increasing influent flow rate. The breakthrough time and exhaustion time decreased, but uptake capacity increased with increasing influent concentration, and actual uptake capacity was obtained as 6.52 mg/g at a concentration of 7.64 mg/L. The three conventional models of bed depth service time (BDST), Thomas and Yoon-Nelson were used to appropriately predict the whole breakthrough behavior of the column and to estimate the characteristic model parameters for boron removal. However, artificial neural network (ANN) model was more accurate than the conventional models with the least relative error and the highest correlation coefficients. By the relative importance of the operational parameters obtained from ANN model, the sequence is as follows: total effluent time > initial concentration > flow rate > column height. The adsorption capacity of boron was changed between 5.24 and 1.74 mg/g during the five time regeneration. From the life factor calculation, it is suggested that the column bed could avoid the breakthrough time of t = 0 for 6.8 cycles, whereas, the uptake capacity would be zero after 7.8 cycles.

Acetaminophen removal by calcium alginate/activated hydrochar composite beads: Batch and fixed-bed studies

The occurrence of acetaminophen in surface water has been reported worldwide, indicating the need of alternative wastewater treatments. Activated hydrochar (AHC) is efficient for pharmaceuticals removal. Powdered AHC presents challenges that hamper its expansion. However, these issues can be overcome by adding polymers, such as alginate, in composite beads. Therefore, the present study aimed to develop and characterize alginate/brewer's spent grain AHC beads, applying them to acetaminophen adsorption in batch and fixed-bed experiments. The adsorbent presented a high surface area (533.42 m² g^-1) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) showed that alginate assigned new functional groups to the composite. Batch studies revealed an endothermic behavior and maximum adsorption capacity of 165.94 mg g^-1, with an equilibrium time of 240 min. The fixed-bed maximum adsorption capacity was 127.01 mg g^-1, with a mass transfer zone of 5.89 cm. The importance of alginate for the adsorbent development has been successfully proven.
