Breeding, Biosorption Characteristics, and Mechanism of a Lead-Resistant Strain

To effectively carry out the bioremediation of a Pb²⁺ polluted environment, a lead-tolerant strain named D1 was screened from the activated sludge of a factory in Hefei, and its lead removal in a solution with Pb²⁺ concentration of 200 mg/L could reach 91% under optimal culture conditions. Morphological observation and 16S rRNA gene sequencing were used to identify D1 accurately, and its cultural characteristics and lead removal mechanism were also preliminarily studied. The results showed that the D1 strain was preliminarily identified as the Sphingobacterium mizutaii strain. The experiments conducted via orthogonal test showed that the optimal conditions for the growth of strain D1 were pH 7, inoculum volume 6%, 35 °C, and rotational speed 150 r/min. According to the results of scanning electron microscopy and energy spectrum analysis before and after the D1 exposure to lead, it is believed that the lead removal mechanism of D1 is surface adsorption. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) results revealed that multiple functional groups on the surface of the bacterial cells are involved in the Pb adsorption process. In conclusion, the D1 strain has excellent application prospects in the bioremediation of lead-contaminated environments.

In situ formation of Ca(OH)2 coating shell to extend the longevity of zero-valent iron biochar composite derived from Fe-rich sludge for aqueous phosphorus removal

Despite being an effective and attractive functional strategy for aqueous phosphorus (P) removal, the use of zero valent iron (ZVI) biochar composites has been severely impeded by rapid self-erosion. We describe a new approach for extending the lifespan of Fe-rich sludge-derived ZVI biochar composites via CaCl2 modification. Preliminary results showed that composites obtained at 900 °C without modification (MBC900) and at 900 °C with 100 g Cl/kg addition (MBC900100) had the highest P removal efficiency. In subsequent batch experiments, MBC900100 exhibited more stable P adsorption capacities than MBC900 over a wide pH range (4-10) and at various dosages, which was enhanced by the presence of HCO3-. The theoretical maximum P adsorption capacities of MBC900 and MBC900100 were 227.14 and 224.15 mg g-1, respectively. Kinetic analysis indicated that chemisorption dominated the removal process. Continuous experimental data using the Yoon-Nelson model indicated that MBC900100 had a considerably longer half-penetration time. The primary mechanism of P removal by MBC900 was Fe/C micro-electrolysis. As the embedded CaO formed a dissolvable Ca(OH)2 shell in situ on the surface of MBC900100, the phosphate formed a precipitate with free Ca2+ before being removed via micro-electrolysis. Overall, CaCl2 modification successfully enhanced the longevity of the ZVI biochar composites.

Enhanced removal of organic contaminants by novel iron-carbon and premagnetization: Performance and enhancement mechanism

Iron-carbon (Fe-C) microelectrolysis has attracted considerable attention in wastewater treatment due to its excellent ability to remove contaminants. Herein, novel Fe-C granules were synthesized by simple calcination method for removing organic contaminations, and a cost-effective and environmentally friendly method, namely pre-magnetization, was used to improve the micro-electrolysis performance of Fe-C. Batch experiments proved that premagnetized iron-carbon (pre-Fe-C) could significantly improve the removal of methyl orange (MO) at different Fe-C mass ratios (1:2-2:1), material dosages (1.0-2.5 g/L), initial pH values (3.0-5.0), and MO concentrations (10.0-50.0 mg/L). Electrochemical analysis showed that premagnetization could increase the current density and reduce the charge transfer resistance of the microelectrolysis system, making Fe-C more susceptible to electrochemical corrosion. Characterizations confirmed that the corrosion products of the materials included FeO, Fe₂O₃, and Fe₃O₄, and more corrosion products were formed in the pre-Fe-C system. Radical quenching experiments and electron spin resonance spectroscopy verified that ^•OH, ¹O₂, and O₂^-• were all involved in pollutant removal, and premagnetization could promote the generation of more reactive oxygen species. Overall, the pre-Fe-C process could effectively remove various organic pollutants, exhibit good adaptability to complex water environments, and hold potential for industrial applications.
