Membrane technology as an emergency response against drinking water shortage in scenarios of dam failure

Integrating reverse osmosis to a conventional river water treatment plant as a strategy to produce drinking water after mining dam rupture events: a case study

Incidents of mining dam failure have compromised the water quality, threatening the water supply. Different strategies are sought to restore the impacted area and to guarantee the water supply. One example is water treatment plants that treat high-polluted waters within the required limits for their multiple usages. The current study assesses the integration of reverse osmosis (RO) to a river water treatment plant (RWTP) installed in Brumadinho (Minas Gerais, Brazil) to treat the water from the Ferro-Carvão stream impacted by the B1 dam rupture in 2019. The RWTP started eleven months after the mining dam rupture and is equipped with eight coagulation-flocculation tanks followed by eight pressurised filters. A pilot RO plant was installed to polish the water treated by the RWTP. Water samples were collected at different points of the water treatment plant and were characterised by their physical, chemical, and biological parameters (160 in total). The results were compared with the historical data (1997-2022) to reveal the alterations in the water quality after the rupture event. The compliance with both parameters was only achieved after the RO treatment, which acted as an additional barrier to 30 contaminants. The water quality indexes (WQI) suggested that the raw surface water, even eleven months after the incident, was unfit for consumption (WQI: 133.9) whereas the reverse osmosis permeate was ranked as excellent in the rating grid (WQI: 23.7).

Integration of Porous Nanomaterial-Infused Membrane in UF/FO Membrane Hybrid for Simulated Osmosis Membrane Bioreactor (OsMBR) Process

This study explored the use of a combination of hydrothermal and sol-gel methods to produce porous titanium dioxide (PTi) powder with a high specific surface area of 112.84 m²/g. The PTi powder was utilized as a filler in the fabrication of ultrafiltration nanocomposite membranes using polysulfone (PSf) as the polymer. The synthesized nanoparticles and membranes were analyzed using various techniques, including BET, TEM, XRD, AFM, FESEM, FTIR, and contact angle measurements. The membrane's performance and antifouling properties were also assessed using bovine serum albumin (BSA) as a simulated wastewater feed solution. Furthermore, the ultrafiltration membranes were tested in the forward osmosis (FO) system using a 0.6-weight-percent solution of poly (sodium 4-styrene sulfonate) as the osmosis solution to evaluate the osmosis membrane bioreactor (OsMBR) process. The results revealed that the incorporation of PTi nanoparticles into the polymer matrix enhanced the hydrophilicity and surface energy of the membrane, resulting in better performance. The optimized membrane containing 1% PTi displayed a water flux of 31.5 L/m²h, compared to the neat membrane water value of 13.7 L/m²h. The membrane also demonstrated excellent antifouling properties, with a flux recovery of 96%. These results highlight the potential of the PTi-infused membrane as a simulated osmosis membrane bioreactor (OsMBR) for wastewater treatment applications.

Significance of MnO2 Type and Solution Parameters in Manganese Removal from Water Solution

A very low concentration of manganese (Mn) in water is a critical issue for municipal and industrial water supply systems. Mn removal technology is based on the use of manganese oxides (MnO_x), especially manganese dioxide (MnO₂) polymorphs, under different conditions of pH and ionic strength (water salinity). The statistical significance of the impact of polymorph type (akhtenskite ε-MnO₂, birnessite δ-MnO₂, cryptomelane α-MnO₂ and pyrolusite β-MnO₂), pH (2-9) and ionic strength (1-50 mmol/L) of solution on the adsorption level of Mn was investigated. The analysis of variance and the non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis H test were applied. Before and after Mn adsorption, the tested polymorphs were characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope techniques and gas porosimetry analysis. Here we demonstrated the significant differences in adsorption level between MnO₂ polymorphs' type and pH; however, the statistical analysis proves that the type of MnO₂ has a four times stronger influence. There was no statistical significance for the ionic strength parameter. We showed that the high adsorption of Mn on the poorly crystalline polymorphs leads to the blockage of micropores in akhtenskite and, contrary, causes the development of the surface structure of birnessite. At the same time, no changes in the surfaces of cryptomelane and pyrolusite, the highly crystalline polymorphs, were found due to the very small loading by the adsorbate.
