Structure and photochemistry of the methanol complexes with methylglyoxal and diacetyl: FTIR matrix isolation and theoretical study

Photo-Induced Reactions between Glyoxal and Hydroxylamine in Cryogenic Matrices

In this paper, the photochemistry of glyoxal−hydroxylamine (Gly−HA) complexes is studied using FTIR matrix isolation spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. The irradiation of the Gly−HA complexes with the filtered output of a mercury lamp (λ > 370 nm) leads to their photoconversion to hydroxyketene−hydroxylamine complexes and the formation of hydroxy(hydroxyamino)acetaldehyde with a hemiaminal structure. The first product is the result of a double hydrogen exchange reaction between the aldehyde group of Gly and the amino or hydroxyl group of HA. The second product is formed as a result of the addition of the nitrogen atom of HA to the carbon atom of one aldehyde group of Gly, followed by the migration of the hydrogen atom from the amino group of hydroxylamine to the oxygen atom of the carbonyl group of glyoxal. The identification of the products is confirmed by deuterium substitution and by MP2 calculations of the structures and vibrational spectra of the identified species.

Complexes of Formaldehyde and α-Dicarbonyls with Hydroxylamine: FTIR Matrix Isolation and Theoretical Study

The interactions of formaldehyde (FA), glyoxal (Gly) and methylglyoxal (MGly) with hydroxylamine (HA) isolated in solid argon and nitrogen were studied using FTIR spectroscopy and ab initio methods. The spectra analysis indicates the formation of two types of hydrogen-bonded complexes between carbonyl and hydroxylamine in the studied matrices. The cyclic planar complexes are stabilized by O–H⋯O(C), and C–H⋯N interactions and the nonplanar complexes are stabilized by O–H⋯O(C) bond. Formaldehyde was found to form with hydroxylamine, the cyclic planar complex and methylglyoxal, the nonplanar one in both argon and nitrogen matrices. In turn, glyoxal forms with hydroxylamine the most stable nonplanar complex in solid argon, whereas in solid nitrogen, both types of the complex are formed.

Photoinduced Double Proton Transfer in the Glyoxal-Methanol Complex Revisited: The Role of the Excited States

Under irradiation in the visible range, the glyoxal-methanol complex in a cryogenic argon matrix undergoes a double proton transfer (DPT) reaction through which the glyoxal molecule isomerizes into hydroxyketene. In this work, we employ electronic structure simulations in order to shed more light on the underlying mechanism. Rewardingly, we find that the lowest singlet excited state (S₁) of the complex acts as a gateway to two previously unknown isomerization pathways, of which one takes place entirely in the singlet manifold and the other also involves the lowest triplet state (T₁). Both of these pathways are fully compatible with the available experimental data, implying that either or both are operative under experimental conditions. In either pathway, the methanol molecule acts as a proton shuttle between the proton-donating and proton-accepting sites of glyoxal, resulting in a dramatic lowering of the potential energy barrier to isomerization with respect to the case of isolated glyoxal. The occurrence of DPT in the singlet manifold is demonstrated directly with the use of nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulations at the spin-flip time-dependent density functional theory level.

The overall reaction process of ozone with methacrolein and isoprene in the condensed phase

The reaction of isoprene and methacrolein with ozone was investigated at different stages in the condensed phase at temperatures from 15 to 265 K by IR spectroscopy. The results revealed the following overall reaction process: the generation of primary ozonide (POZ), then its decomposition, and finally conversion into secondary ozonide (SOZ), which supported the Criegee mechanism. In the POZ and SOZ of isoprene, ozone cyclo-added preferentially to the double-bond that is not substituted by the methyl group. For methacrolein, the mainly detected SOZ is claimed to be MACSII formed by recombination of the intermediate CH(2)OO radical with aldehyde carbonyl of methylglyoxal in stead of the ketone carbonyl group. Theoretical calculations were performed at the B3LYP//MP2/6-311++G (2d, 2p) level to analyze the resulting spectrum. The good agreement between the calculated infrared spectra of POZ and SOZ and the experimental spectra supports the above-described findings.
