Inelastic neutron scattering studies of hydrated CuO, ZnO and CeO2 nanoparticles

Nanoconfined Water in Pillared Zeolites Probed by 1H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance

Here, we report the results of our 1H nuclear magnetic resonance study of the dynamics of water molecules confined in zeolites (mordenite and ZSM-5 structures) with hierarchical porosity (micropores in zeolite lamella and mesopores formed by amorphous SiO2 in the inter-lamellar space). 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra show that water experiences complex behavior within the temperature range from 173 to 298 K. The temperature dependence of 1H spin-lattice relaxation evidences the presence of three processes with different activation energies: freezing (about 30 kJ/mol), fast rotation (about 10 kJ/mol), and translational motion of water molecules (23.6 and 26.0 kJ/mol for pillared mordenite and ZSM-5, respectively). For translational motion, the activation energy is markedly lower than for water in mesoporous silica or zeolites with similar mesopore size but with disordered secondary porosity. This indicates that the process of water diffusion in zeolites with hierarchical porosity is governed not only by the presence of mesopores, but also by the mutual arrangement of meso- and micropores. The translational motion of water molecules is determined mainly by zeolite micropores.

Understanding the Surface Characteristics of Biochar and Its Catalytic Activity for the Hydrodeoxygenation of Guaiacol

Biochar (BCR) was obtained from the pyrolysis of a palm-oil-empty fruit bunch at 773 K for 2 h and used as a catalyst for the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of guaiacol (GUA) as a bio-oil model compound. Brunauer–Emmet–Teller surface area analysis, NH3 and CO2-temperature-programmed desorption, scanning electron microscope–dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, CHN analysis and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy suggested that macroporous and mesoporous structures were formed in BCR with a co-presence of hydrophilic and hydrophobic sites and acid–base behavior. A combination of infrared, Raman and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) was carried out to achieve a complete vibrational assignment of BCR. The CH–OH ratio in BCR is ~5, showing that the hydroxyl functional groups are a minority species. There was no evidence for any aromatic C–H stretch modes in the infrared, but they are clearly seen in the INS and are the majority species, with a ratio of sp3–CH:sp2–CH of 1:1.3. The hydrogen bound to sp2–C is largely present as isolated C–H bonds, rather than adjacent C–H bonds. The Raman spectrum shows the characteristic G band (ideal graphitic lattice) and three D bands (disordered graphitic lattice, amorphous carbon, and defective graphitic lattice) of sp2 carbons. Adsorbed water in BCR is present as disordered layers on the surface rather than trapped in voids in the material and could be removed easily by drying prior to catalysis. Catalytic testing demonstrated that BCR was able to catalyze the HDO of GUA, yielding phenol and cresols as the major products. Phenol was produced both from the direct demethoxylation of GUA, as well as through the demethylation pathway via the formation of catechol as the intermediate followed by deoxygenation.

New Insights about CuO Nanoparticles from Inelastic Neutron Scattering

Inelastic Neutron Scattering (INS) spectroscopy has provided a unique insight into the magnetodymanics of nanoscale copper (II) oxide (CuO). We present evidence for the propagation of magnons in the directions of the ordering vectors of both the commensurate and helically modulated incommensurate antiferromagnetic phases of CuO. The temperature dependency of the magnon spin-wave intensity (in the accessible energy-range of the experiment) conforms to the Bose population of states at low temperatures (T ≤ 100 K), as expected for bosons, then intensity significantly increases, with maximum at about 225 K (close to T_N), and decreases at higher temperatures. The obtained results can be related to gradual softening of the dispersion curves of magnon spin-waves and decreasing the spin gap with temperature approaching T_N on heating, and slow dissipation of the short-range dynamic spin correlations at higher temperatures. However, the intensity of the magnon signal was found to be particle size dependent, and increases with decreasing particle size. This "reverse size effect" is believed to be related to either creation of single-domain particles at the nanoscale, or "superferromagnetism effect" and the formation of collective particle states.
