Computational study on the ability of functionalized graphene nanosheet for nitrate removal from water

The effect of the initial temperature, pressure, and shape of carbon nanopores on the separation process of SiO2 molecules from water vapor by molecular dynamics simulation

Today, with the advancement of science in nanotechnology, it is possible to remove dust nanostructures from the air breathed by humans or other fluids. In the present study, the separation of SiO2 molecules from H2O vapor is studied using molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. This research studied the effect of initial temperature, nanopore geometry, and initial pressure on the separation of SiO2 molecules. The obtained results show that by increasing the temperature to 500 K, the maximum velocity (Max-Vel) of the samples reached 2.47 Å/fs. Regarding the increasing velocity of particles, more particles pass via the nanopores. Moreover, the shape of the nanopore could affect the number of passing particles. The results show that in the samples with a cylindrical nanopore, 20 and 40% of SiO2 molecules, and with the sphere cavity, about 32 and 38% of SiO2 particles passed in the simulated structure. So, it can be concluded that the performance of carbon nanosheets with a cylindrical pore and 450 K was more optimal. Also, the results show that an increase in initial pressure leads to a decrease in the passage of SiO2 particles. The results reveal that about 14 and 54% of Silica particles passed via the carbon membrane with increasing pressure. Therefore, for use in industry, in terms of separating dust particles, in addition to applying an EF, temperature, nanopore geometry, and initial pressure should be controlled.

Review of functionalized nano porous membranes for desalination and water purification: MD simulations perspective

Today, it is known that most of the water sources in the world are either drying out or contaminated. With the increasing population, the water demand is increasing drastically almost in every sector each year, which makes processes like water treatment and desalination one of the most critical environmental subjects of the future. Therefore, developing energy-efficient and faster methods are a must for the industry. Using functional groups on the membranes is known to be an effective way to develop shorter routes for water treatment. Accordingly, a review of nano-porous structures having functional groups used or designed for desalination and water treatment is presented in this study. A systematic scan has been conducted in the literature for the studies performed by molecular dynamics simulations. The selected studies have been classified according to membrane geometry, actuation mechanism, functionalized groups, and contaminant materials. Permeability, rejection rate, pressure, and temperature ranges are compiled for all of the studies examined. It has been observed that the pore size of a well-designed membrane should be small enough to reject contaminant molecules, atoms, or ions but wide enough to allow high water permeation. Adding functional groups to membranes is observed to affect the permeability and the rejection rate. In general, hydrophilic functional groups around the pores increase membrane permeability. In contrast, hydrophobic ones decrease the permeability. Besides affecting water permeation, the usage of charged functional groups mainly affects the rejection rate of ions and charged molecules.

Understanding the performance of graphdiyne membrane for the separation of nitrate ions from aqueous solution at the atomistic scale

A molecular dynamics simulation study is conducted to investigate the capability of the pristine graphdiyne nanosheet for nitrate ion separation from water. The removal of nitrate ion contaminants from water is of critical importance as it represents an environmental hazard. The graphdiyne is a carbon-based membrane with pore density of 2.4 × 10¹⁸ pores/m² and incircle radius of 2.8 Å. We show that the efficient water flow is accurately controlled through fine regulation of the exerted hydrostatic pressure. The high water permeability of 6.19 L.Day^-1cm^-2MPa^-1 with 100% nitrate ions rejection suggests that the graphdiyne can perform as a suitable membrane for nitrate separation. The potential of mean force analysis of the single water molecule and nitrate ion indicated the free energy barriers for nitrate of about 4 times higher than that of water molecules. The results reveal the weak interaction of the water molecules and the membrane which aid to high water flux.

Design of Multi-Layer Graphene Membrane with Descending Pore Size for 100% Water Desalination by Simulation Using ReaxFF

The performance of a desalination membrane depends on a specific pore size suitable for both water permeability and salt rejection. To increase membrane permeability, the applied pressure should be increased, which creates the need to improve membrane stability. In this research article, a molecular dynamics (MD) simulation was performed using ReaxFF module from Amsterdam Modeling suite (AMS) software to simulate water desalination efficiency using a single and multi-layer graphene membrane. The graphene membrane with different pore sizes and a multi-layer graphene membrane with descending pore size in each layer were designed and studied under different pressures. The stability of the membrane was checked using Material Studio 2019 by studying the dynamics summary. The single-layer graphene membrane was evaluated under pressures ranging from 100 to 500 MPa, with the salt rejection ranging from 95% to 82% with a water permeability of 0.347 × 10^-9 to 2.94 × 10^-9 (mm.g.cm^-2s^-1.bar^-1), respectively. Almost 100% salt rejection was achieved for the multi-layer graphene membrane. This study successfully demonstrated the design and optimization of graphene membrane performance without functionalization.

A theoretical investigation into the effects of functionalized graphene nanosheets on dimethyl sulfoxide separation

The potential of carbon-based nanosheet membranes with functionalized pores is great as water treatment membranes. Using the molecular dynamic simulation technique, the dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) separation from the water/DMSO binary solution is investigated, and the functionalized graphene nanosheets are used as a membrane. This membrane was functionalized by -F (fluorine) and -H (hydrogen) functional groups. For the separation of DMSO, external hydrostatic pressures up to 100 MPa were applied to the considered systems. The separation mechanism was based on molecular size. Multiple analyses were done to study the capability of considered membranes for the separation of DMSO molecules from water. The simulation results have indicated that the graphene membrane with various functional groups was impervious to DMSO molecules, and the water molecules were able to permeate across the membrane's pore with high penetrability. In this regard, the water permeability in 100 MPa was obtained at 3915.5 and 3715.3 L m^-2. h^-1. bar^-1 for fluorinated and hydrogenated pore membranes, respectively. These functionalized graphene membranes have high efficiency, and they can be considered effective modules for water/DMSO binary mixture separations.

Transport of hydrated nitrate and nitrite ions through graphene nanopores in aqueous medium

Nitrate ( NO 3 - ) and nitrite ( NO 2 - ) ions are naturally occurring inorganic ions that are part of the nitrogen cycle. High doses of these ions in drinking water impose a potential risk to public health. In this work, molecular dynamics simulations are carried out to study the passage of nitrate and nitrite ions from water through graphene nanosheets (GNS) with hydrogen-functionalized narrow pores in presence of an external electric field. The passage of ions through the pores is investigated through calculations of ion flux, and the results are analyzed through calculations of various structural and thermodynamic properties such as the density of ions and water, ion-water radial distribution functions, two-dimensional density distribution functions, and the potentials of mean force of the ions. Current simulations show that the nitrite ions can pass more in numbers than the nitrate ions in a given time through GNS hydrogen-functionalized pore of different geometry. It is found that the nitrite ions can permeate faster than the nitrate ions despite the former having higher hydration energy in the bulk. This can be explained in terms of the competition between the number density of the ions along the pore axis and the free energy barrier calculated from the potential of mean force. Also, an externally applied electric field is found to be important for faster permeation of the nitrite over the nitrate ions. The current study suggests that graphene nanosheets with carefully created pores can be effective in achieving selective passage of ions from aqueous solutions.
