Recent advances in synthesis and properties of silver nanoclusters

Achieving atomic precision in nanostructured materials is essential for comprehending formation mechanisms and elucidating structure-property relationships. Within the realm of nanoscience and technology, atomically precise ligand-protected noble metal nanoclusters (NCs) have emerged as a rapidly expanding area of interest. These clusters manifest quantum confinement-induced optoelectronic, photophysical, and chemical properties, along with remarkable catalytic capabilities. Among coinage metals, silver distinguishes itself for the fabrication of stable nanoclusters, primarily due to its cost-effectiveness compared to gold. This minireview provides an overview of recent advancements since 2020 in synthetic methodologies and ligand selections toward attaining NCs boasting a minimum of two free valence electrons. Additionally, it explores strategies for fine-tuning optical properties. The discussion extends to surface reactivity, elucidating how exposure to ligands, heat, and light induces transformations in size and structure. Of paramount significance are the applications of silver NCs in catalytic reactions for energy and chemical conversion, supplemented by in-depth mechanistic insights. Furthermore, the review delineates challenges and outlines future directions in the NC field, with an eye toward the design of new functional materials and prospective applications in diverse technologies, including optoelectronics, energy conversion, and fine chemical synthesis.

Synthesis and Single Crystal X-ray Diffraction Structure of an Indium Arsenide Nanocluster

The discovery of magic-sized clusters as intermediates in the synthesis of colloidal quantum dots has allowed for insight into formation pathways and provided atomically precise molecular platforms for studying the structure and surface chemistry of those materials. The synthesis of monodisperse InAs quantum dots has been developed through the use of indium carboxylate and As(SiMe3)3 as precursors and documented to proceed through the formation of magic-sized intermediates. Herein, we report the synthesis, isolation, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction structure of an InAs nanocluster that is ubiquitous across reports of InAs quantum dot synthesis. The structure, In26As18(O2CR)24(PR'3)3, differs substantially from previously reported semiconductor nanocluster structures even within the III-V family. However, it can be structurally linked to III-V and II-VI cluster structures through the anion sublattice. Further analysis using variable temperature absorbance spectroscopy and support from computation deepen our understanding of the reported structure and InAs nanomaterials as a whole.

Unveiling the Nanocluster Conversion Pathway for Highly Monodisperse InAs Colloidal Quantum Dots

Colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) have garnered significant attention in nanoscience and technology, with a particular emphasis on achieving high monodispersity in their synthesis. Recent advances in understanding the chemistry of reaction intermediates such as magic-sized nanoclusters (MSC) have paved the way for innovative synthetic strategies. Notably, monodisperse CQDs of various compositions, including indium phosphide, indium arsenide, and cadmium chalcogenide, have been successfully prepared using nanocluster intermediates as single-source precursors. Still, the early stage conversion chemistry of these nanoclusters preceding CQD formation has not been fully unveiled yet. Herein, we report the first-order conversion of amorphous nanoclusters (AMCs) to InAs MSCs prior to the formation of CQDs. We find that MSC, isolated via gel-permeation chromatography, is more stable than purified AMCs, as demonstrated in various chemical and thermolytic reactions. While the surface of InAs AMCs and MSC is similarly bound with carboxylate ligands, detailed structural analyses employing synchrotron X-ray scattering and X-ray absorption spectroscopy unveil subtle distinctions arising from the distinct surface properties and structural disorder characteristics of InAs nanoclusters. We propose that InAs AMCs undergo a surface reduction and structural ordering process, resulting in the formation of an InAs MSC in a thermodynamically local minimum state. Furthermore, we demonstrate that both types of nanoclusters serve as viable precursors, providing a similar monomer supply rate at elevated temperatures of around 300 °C. This study offers invaluable insights into the interplay of structure and chemical stability in binary nanoclusters, enhancing our ability to design these nanoclusters as precursors for highly monodisperse CQDs.

Anion Exchange in Semiconductor Magic-Size Clusters

Ion exchange is an effective postsynthesis strategy for the design of colloidal nanomaterials with unique structures and properties. In contrast to the rapid development of cation exchange (CE), the study of anion exchange is still in its infancy and requires an in-depth understanding. Magic-size clusters (MSCs) are important reaction intermediates in quantum dot (QD) synthesis, and studying the ion exchange processes can provide valuable insights into the transformations of QDs. Here, we achieved anion exchange in Cd-based MSCs and elucidated the reaction pathways. We demonstrated that the anion exchange was a stepwise intermolecular transition mediated by covalent inorganic complexes (CICs). We proposed that this transition involved three essential steps: the disassembly of CdE1-MSCs into CdE1-CICs (step 1), an anion exchange reaction from CdE1-CICs to CdE2-CICs (step 2), and assembly of CdE2-CICs to CdE2-MSCs (step 3). Step 3 was the rate-determining step and followed first-order reaction kinetics (kobs = 0.01 min-1; from CdSe-MSCs to CdS-MSCs). Further studies revealed that the activity of foreign anions only affected the reaction kinetics without altering the reaction pathway. The present study provides a deeper insight into the anion exchange mechanisms of MSCs and will further shed light on the synthesis of QDs.

Ligand Steric Profile Tunes the Reactivity of Indium Phosphide Clusters

Indium phosphide quantum dots have become an industrially relevant material for solid-state lighting and wide color gamut displays. The synthesis of indium phosphide quantum dots from indium carboxylates and tris(trimethylsilyl)phosphine (P(SiMe3)3) is understood to proceed through the formation of magic-sized clusters, with In37P20(O2CR)51 being the key isolable intermediate. The reactivity of the In37P20(O2CR)51 cluster is a vital parameter in controlling the conversion to quantum dots. Herein, we report structural perturbations of In37P20(O2CR)51 clusters induced by tuning the steric properties of a series of substituted phenylacetate ligands. This approach allows for control over reactivity with P(SiMe3)3, where meta-substituents enhance the susceptibility to ligand displacement, and para-substituents hinder phosphine diffusion to the core. Thermolysis studies show that with complete cluster dissolution, steric profile can modulate the nucleation period, resulting in a nanocrystal size dependence on ligand steric profile. The enhanced stability from ligand engineering also allows for the isolation and structural characterization by single-crystal X-ray diffraction of a new III-V magic-sized cluster with the formula In26P13(O2CR)39. This intermediate precedes the In37P20(O2CR)51 cluster on the InP QD reaction coordinate. The physical and electronic structure of this cluster are analyzed, providing new insight into previously unrecognized relationships between II-VI and III-V materials and the discrete growth of III-V cluster intermediates.

Revealing Two Distinct Formation Pathways of 2D Wurtzite-CdSe Nanocrystals Using In Situ X-Ray Scattering

Understanding the mechanism underlying the formation of quantum-sized semiconductor nanocrystals is crucial for controlling their synthesis for a wide array of applications. However, most studies of 2D CdSe nanocrystals have relied predominantly on ex situ analyses, obscuring key intermediate stages and raising fundamental questions regarding their lateral shapes. Herein, the formation pathways of two distinct quantum-sized 2D wurtzite-CdSe nanocrystals - nanoribbons and nanosheets - by employing a comprehensive approach, combining in situ small-angle X-ray scattering techniques with various ex situ characterization methods is studied. Although both nanostructures share the same thickness of ≈1.4 nm, they display contrasting lateral dimensions. The findings reveal the pivotal role of Se precursor reactivity in determining two distinct synthesis pathways. Specifically, highly reactive precursors promote the formation of the nanocluster-lamellar assemblies, leading to the synthesis of 2D nanoribbons with elongated shapes. In contrast, mild precursors produce nanosheets from a tiny seed of 2D nuclei, and the lateral growth is regulated by chloride ions, rather than relying on nanocluster-lamellar assemblies or Cd(halide)2 -alkylamine templates, resulting in 2D nanocrystals with relatively shorter lengths. These findings significantly advance the understanding of the growth mechanism governing quantum-sized 2D semiconductor nanocrystals and offer valuable guidelines for their rational synthesis.

Surface-Ligand Tuned Reversible Transformations in Aqueous Environments Between CdSe Magic-Size Clusters and Their Precursor Compounds

That magic-size clusters (MSCs) have their counterpart precursor compounds (PCs) has not been generally accepted by expertise circles. Here, experimental evidence to support this new concept is presented. With aqueous-phase CdSe MSCs as a model system, it is shown that when the MSCs are dispersed in water containing a certain amount of L-cysteine (Cys), the MSCs disappear slowly. Upon the addition of CdCl2 , the MSCs recover. It is proposed that after dispersing, the MSCs transform to their quasi-isomeric, non-absorbing PCs upon Cys addition. In the presence of CdCl2 , the PCs transform back to the MSCs due to Cys elimination. The surface ligand Cys of the MSCs plays a significant role in the reversible transformations. The present study provides compelling evidence that absorbing MSCs have their non-absorbing PCs. The study findings suggest that the transformation between two MSCs that display absorption spectral shifts in a stepwise pattern is assisted by their PCs.

Navigating the Potential Energy Surface of CdSe Magic-Sized Clusters: Synthesis and Interconversion of Atomically Precise Nanocrystal Polymorphs

Magic-sized clusters (MSCs) are kinetically stable, atomically precise intermediates along the quantum dot (QD) reaction potential energy surface. Literature precedent establishes two classes of cadmium selenide MSCs with QD-like inorganic cores: one class is proposed to be cation-rich with a zincblende crystal structure, while the other is proposed to be stoichiometric with a "wurtzite-like" core. However, the wide range of synthetic protocols used to access MSCs has made direct comparisons of their structure and surface chemistry difficult. Furthermore, the physical and chemical relationships between MSC polymorphs are yet to be established. Here, we demonstrate that both cation-rich and stoichiometric CdSe MSCs can be synthesized from identical reagents and can be interconverted through the addition of either excess cadmium or selenium precursor. The structural and compositional differences between these two polymorphs are contrasted using a combination of 1H NMR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), pair distribution function (PDF) analysis, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy, and UV-vis transient absorption spectroscopy. The subsequent polymorph interconversion reactions are monitored by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, with evidence for an altered cluster atomic structure observed by powder XRD and PDF analysis. This work helps to simplify the complex picture of the CdSe nanocrystal landscape and provides a method to explore structure-property relationships in colloidal semiconductors through atomically precise synthesis.

Precursor Compound-Assisted Formation of CdS Magic-Size Clusters in Aqueous Solutions

Investigations of the formation pathway of semiconductor magic-size clusters (MSCs) in aqueous solutions are quite limited. Here, we present our understanding about a precursor compound (PC)-assisted formation pathway of aqueous-phase CdS MSCs exhibiting a characteristic absorption peak at about 360 nm (MSC-360). The reaction uses CdCl2 as the Cd source and thioglycolic acid (TGA) as both the S source and ligand in alkaline aqueous solutions. The mixture remains absorption featureless upon incubation at room temperature but with MSC-360 absorption observed upon adding butylamine. The longer the incubation period of the aqueous solution, the more MSC-360 forms after adding butylamine. We propose that Cd-TGA complexes form first, in which the TGA moieties then decompose partially to form PC of MSC-360 (PC-360) that cannot be observed in the optical absorption spectrum. The resulting PC-360 transforms to MSC-360 via quasi-isomerization in the presence of butylamine. The present study provides an in-depth understanding about the formation of aqueous-phase MSCs.

Isostructural Nanocluster Manipulation Reveals Pivotal Role of One Surface Atom in Click Chemistry

Elucidating single-atom effects on the fundamental properties of nanoparticles is challenging because single-atom modifications are typically accompanied by appreciable changes to the overall particle's structure. Herein, we report the synthesis of a [Cu58 H20 PET36 (PPh3 )4 ]2+ (Cu58 ; PET: phenylethanethiolate; PPh3 : triphenylphosphine) nanocluster-an atomically precise nanoparticle-that can be transformed into the surface-defective analog [Cu57 H20 PET36 (PPh3 )4 ]+ (Cu57 ). Both nanoclusters are virtually identical, with five concentric metal shells, save for one missing surface copper atom in Cu57 . Remarkably, the loss of this single surface atom drastically alters the reactivity of the nanocluster. In contrast to Cu58 , Cu57 shows promising activity for click chemistry, particularly photoinduced [3+2] azide-alkyne cycloaddition (AAC), which is attributed to the active catalytic site in Cu57 after the removal of one surface copper atom. Our study not only presents a unique system for uncovering the effect of a single-surface atom modification on nanoparticle properties but also showcases single-atom surface modification as a powerful means for designing nanoparticle catalysts.

Radioluminescent Cu-Au Metal Nanoclusters: Synthesis and Self-Assembly for Efficient X-ray Scintillation and Imaging

Zero-dimensional (0D) scintillation materials have drawn tremendous attention due to their inherent advantages in the fabrication of flexible high-energy radiation scintillation screens by solution processes. Although considerable progress has been made in the development of 0D scintillators, such as the current leading lead-halide perovskite nanocrystals and quantum dots, challenges still persist, including potential issues with self-absorption, air stability, and eco-friendliness. Here, we present a strategy to overcome those limitations by synthesis and self-assembly of a new class of scintillators based on metal nanoclusters. We demonstrate the gram-scale synthesis of an atomically precise nanocluster with a Cu-Au alloy core exhibiting high phosphorescence quantum yield, aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) behavior, and intense radioluminescence. By controlling solvent interactions, the AIEE-active nanoclusters were self-assembled into submicron spherical superparticles in solution, which we exploited as a novel building block for flexible particle-deposited scintillation films with high-resolution X-ray imaging performance. This work reveals metal nanoclusters and their self-assembled superstructures as a promising class of scintillators for practical applications in high-energy radiation detection and imaging.

Synthesis, Assembly, and Applications of Magic-Sized Semiconductor (CdSe)13 Cluster

ConspectusAtomically precise metal chalcogenide clusters (MCCs) are model molecular compounds of scientifically and technologically important semiconductor nanocrystals, which are known as quantum dots (QDs). The significantly high ambient stability of MCCs of particular sizes, as compared to that of slightly smaller or larger sizes, made them be termed "magic-sized clusters" (MSCs). In other words, MSCs with specific sizes between sizes of precursors (typically, metal-ligand complexes) and nanocrystals (typically, QDs) appear sequentially during the colloidal synthesis of nanocrystals, while the other cluster species decompose to precursor monomers or are consumed during the growth of the nanocrystals. Unlike nanocrystals with an ambiguous atomic-level structure and a substantial size distribution, MSCs possess atomically monodisperse size, composition, and distinct atomic arrangement. Chemical synthesis and exploration of properties of MSCs are of great significance since they help systematically understand the evolution of fundamental properties as well as build structure-activity relationships at distinct molecular levels. Furthermore, MSCs are anticipated to offer atomic-level insights into the growth mechanism of the semiconductor nanocrystals, which is highly desirable in the design of advanced materials with new functions. In this Account, we cover our recent efforts in the advancement of one of the most important stoichiometric CdSe MSCs, (CdSe)₁₃. In particular, we present its molecular structure derived from a single crystal X-ray crystallographic study of the closest MSC, Cd₁₄Se₁₃. The crystal structure of MSC enables not only the understanding of the electronic structure and prediction of the potential sites for heteroatom dopants (e.g., Mn²⁺ and Co²⁺) but also the identification of favorable synthetic conditions for the selective synthesis of desired MSCs. Next, we focus on enhancing the photoluminescence quantum yield and stability of Mn²⁺ doped (CdSe)₁₃ MSCs through their self-assembly, which is facilitated by the rigid diamines. In addition, we show how atomic-level synergistic effects and functional groups of the assemblies of alloy MSCs can be utilized for a highly enhanced catalytic CO₂ fixation with epoxides. Benefiting from the intermediate stability, the MSCs are explored as single-source precursors to low-dimensional nanostructures, such as nanoribbons and nanoplatelets, through the controlled transformation. Distinct differences in the outcome of the solid-state and colloidal-state conversion of MSCs suggest the need for careful consideration of the phase and reactivity of MSCs as well as the type of dopant to achieve novel structured multicomponent semiconductors. Finally, we summarize the Account and provide future perspectives on the fundamental and applied scientific research of MSCs.

Semiconductor clusters: Synthetic precursors for colloidal quantum dots

Semiconductor clusters have been implicated as reaction intermediates between molecular precursors and colloidal quantum dots (CQDs). The success of isolation of semiconductor clusters have enabled detailed investigation of the atomic information of semiconductor clusters. The identification of atomic information has emerged as an important topic because knowledge of the structure-function relationship of intermediate clusters has been helpful to reveal the synthetic mechanism of CQDs. Recently, they have been utilized as the synthetic precursors for CQDs, which was not readily achieved using conventional molecular precursors. This mini review briefly introduces the current understanding of their atomic information such as the composition, structure, and surface. We then discuss advantages, limitations, and the perspective of semiconductor clusters as a precursor for synthesis of CQDs.

Designing inorganically functionalized magic-size II-VI clusters and unraveling their surface states

Surface engineering is a critical step in the functionalization of nanomaterials to improve their optical and electrochemical properties. However, this process remains a challenge in II-VI magic-size clusters (MSCs) due to their high sensitivity to the environment. Herein, we developed a general surface modification strategy to design all-inorganic MSCs by using certain metal salts (cation = Zn2+, In3+; Anion = Cl-, NO3 -, OTf-) and stabilized (CdS)34, (CdSe)34 and (ZnSe)34 MSCs in polar solvents. We further investigated the surface states of II-VI MSCs using electrochemiluminescence (ECL). The mechanism study revealed that the ECL emission was attributed to . Two ECL emissions at 556 nm and 530 nm demonstrated two surface passivation modes on (CdS)34 MSCs, which can be tuned by the surface ligands. The achievement of surface engineering opens a new design space for functional MSC compounds.
