Preparation of bifunctional monomer molecularly imprinted polymer filled solid-phase extraction for sensitivity improvement of quantitative analysis of sulfonamide in milk

Rapid and enhanced detection of sulfonamide antibiotic using task-specific ionic liquids nanoconfined in tunable nanoporous carbons

The development of a novel multifunctional adsorbent for the sensitive detection and capture of antibiotic residues in environmental and food samples presents a significant challenge. In this study, we synthesized a pioneering nanocomposite, ILs@PC, by encapsulating task-specific ionic liquids (ILs) within nitrogen-doped porous carbon (PC) derived from metal-triazolate frameworks. This ILs@PC nanocomposite functions as a multifunctional adsorbent in dispersive solid-phase extraction (DSPE), enabling simultaneous sorptive removal, sensitive detection, and molecular sieve selection. The ILs@PC demonstrated enhanced adsorption efficiency and sensitivity for sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs) compared to the pristine PC, attributed to the nanoconfinement effect of the ILs and the influence of pore volume on this effect. When integrated with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), the ILs@PC-based DSPE method achieved a detection limit of 0.75-1.88 μg L-1 for SAs, along with satisfactory recoveries of 86.0 %-111.9 %. Additionally, a portable syringe device was developed to facilitate rapid on-site extraction and enrichment of SAs. The practicality of this method was validated through its successful application in detecting SAs in real samples, including lake water and milk. This approach highlights its potential for efficient and rapid monitoring of antibiotic residues in both environmental and food systems.

Tetraphenylmethane based three-dimensional conjugated microporous polymer as adsorbent for solid-phase extraction of trace sulfonamide antibiotics in milk samples

Sulfonamide antibiotics have a broad spectrum of antibacterial action and are widely used, but their overuse poses a threat to human health. In this study, a three-dimensional conjugated microporous polymer, which was designated as TPM-CMP, was synthesized via Friedel-Crafts reaction by using tetraphenylmethane (TPM) and biphenyl dichlorobenzene as monomers, and it was utilized as an adsorbent in solid-phase extraction (SPE) of sulfonamides. The TPM-CMP demonstrated high extraction efficiency for sulfonamides due to π-stacking interactions, hydrophobic forces, and pore-filling effects. Consequently, the SPE was combined with liquid chromatography to detect sulfonamides in milk samples. For this method established in this study, a good linear response was observed in the range of 3.3-300.0 ng g-1, with a detection limit (S/N = 3) between 1.0 and 1.5 ng g-1. The method recoveries of four sulfonamide in milk samples ranged from 83.4 % to 117 %, with relative standard deviations below 10 %.

Preparation of a V-COF@SWCNTs-COOH/SPCE supported molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensor for real-time detection of trace sulfadimidine

To overcome the limitations of insufficient sensitivity and poor specificity of portable screen-printed carbon electrode-electrochemical sensors (SPCE-EC) in practical applications, we prepared carrier composites of carboxylic single-walled carbon nanotubes vertically grafted by covalent organic frameworks (v-COF@SWCNTs-COOH) and coated with a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) of sulfadimidine (SM2). 55 °C hot steam elution is more eco-friendly than traditional organic solvent elution. The results showed that when the mass ratio of DBA to DBA-SWCNTs was 1:1, the v-COF@SWCNTs-COOH obtained by the two-step synthesis method could increase the electrical signal up to 2.33-fold of the bare electrode. The bifunctional monomer MIP prepared on the above structure enhanced the signal response by 2.91-fold, with a high imprint factor of 20. The assembled MIP/v-COF@SWCNTs-COOH/SPCE were analyzed by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) with a high sensitivity of 0.21 nM for LOD and 0.70 nM for LOQ. In milk and fish samples, the recovery rate was 95.0 %-104.8 %. The validation of authentic pork samples with the statutory LC-MS/MS method showed no significant difference (P > 0.05). The sensor's performance indicators remained robust after five repeated uses. Therefore, the MIP/v-COF@SWCNTs-COOH/SPCE combines the cheapness and portability of SPCE, while the sensitivity and specificity of small molecule detection were significantly improved.

Surface molecularly imprinted polymer/covalent organic framework/silica composite material with specific recognition ability and excellent chromatographic performance

Facing with the difficulty of specific chromatographic separation of nucleoside drugs, this study prepared a surface molecularly imprinted polymer (SMIP) modified covalent organic framework (COF) coated silica stationary phase based on the specificity of molecular imprinting technology and the powerful chromatographic separation performance of COF. This novel SMIP-COF@SiO2 stationary phase can not only specifically identify template molecule and structural analogs, but can also be used to separate multiple types of analytes, such as B vitamins, sulfonamides, alkylbenzenes, phenyl ketones, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and environmental endocrine disruptors, which satisfies the need for complex sample separation. Various retention mechanisms have been investigated and multiple interactions between the SMIP-COF@SiO2 stationary phase and the analytes are discovered. The chromatographic performance of SMIP-COF@SiO2 is far superior to that of the SMIP@SiO2 and COF@SiO2. Furthermore, the SMIP-COF@SiO2 stationary phase can be successfully used to analyze polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the environmental water sample and detect whitening ingredient in skincare product, indicating its great potential for application in various fields.

Synthesis of furan-modified cationic cellulose for stereo-specific imprinting and separation of S-indacrinone via Diels-Alder reaction

This study introduces a novel approach for the separation of indacrinone (IC) enantiomers, crucial in treating edema, hypertension, and hyperuricemia. A cationic biopolymer from furan-2-ylmethylhydrazine-cellulose (FUH-CE), derived from cyanoethyl cellulose (CEC), serving as a substrate in molecular imprinting. A key innovation is the use of the Diels-Alder reaction for efficient cross-linking with bis(maleimido)ethane (BME). This chemical strategy resulted in molecularly imprinted microparticles with high selectivity for the S-IC enantiomer, which can be eluted by adjusting the solution's pH. Extensive characterization confirmed the chemical modifications and selective binding efficacy of these biopolymers. Utilizing separation columns, our method achieved an impressive chiral resolution of (±)-IC, with an enantiomeric excess (ee) of 95 % for R-IC during the loading phase and 97 % for S-IC during elution. Under optimized conditions, the biopolymer demonstrated a maximum binding capacity of 131 mg/g at pH 6. This advanced approach represents a significant advancement in chiral separation technology, offering a robust and efficient technique for the selective isolation of enantiomers. This method not only enhances potential targeted therapeutic applications but also provides a scalable solution for industrial chiral separations.

Selective uranyl ion-imprinting with clickable amidoxime-functionalized pullulan

Manufacturing a highly effective sorbent for removing UO22+ ions from aqueous effluents is vital for safeguarding the environment and recovering valuable resources. This research presents an innovative strategy employing adsorbents derived from pullulan, specifically tailored with furfuryl-amidoxime (FAO), to improve their affinity for UO22+ ions. The formation of a UO22+ ion-imprinted sorbent (U-II-P) was achieved by crosslinking the UO22+/FAO-modified pullulan (FAO-P) complex with bis(maleimido)ethane (BME) via click Diels-Alder (DA) cyclization, enhancing its attraction and specificity for UO22+ ions. Detailed characterization of the synthesis was performed using NMR and FTIR spectroscopy, and the sorbent's external textures were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The U-II-P sorbent showcased outstanding preference for UO22+ over other metallic ions, with the most efficient adsorption occurring at pH 5. It exhibited a significant adsorption capacity of 262 mg/g, closely aligning with the predictions of the Langmuir adsorption model and obeying pseudo-second-order kinetic behavior. This investigation underlines the effectiveness of FAO-P as a specialized solution for UO22+ ion extraction from wastewater, positioning it as a viable option for the remediation of heavy metals.

Application of Biosensors and Biomimetic Sensors in Dairy Products Testing

This article summarizes the applications of biosensors and biomimetic sensors in the detection of residues in dairy products. Biosensors utilize biological molecules such as enzymes or antibodies to detect residual substances in dairy products, demonstrating high specificity and sensitivity. Biomimetic sensors, inspired by biosensors, use synthetic materials to mimic biological sensing mechanisms, enhancing stability and reproducibility. Both sensor types have achieved significant success in detecting pesticide residues, veterinary drugs, bacteria, and other contaminants in dairy products. The applications of biological and biomimetic sensors not only improve the efficiency of residue detection in dairy products but also have the potential to reduce the time and cost of traditional methods. Their specificity and high sensitivity make them powerful tools in the dairy industry, thus contributing to ensuring the quality and safety of dairy products and meeting the growing consumer demands for health and food safety.

Diels-Alder clickable furan-thiosemicarbazide cellulose for selective ruthenium (III) imprinting

Developing an efficient adsorbent for Ru3+ ions in wastewater is crucial for both environmental protection and resource recovery. This study introduces a novel approach using cellulose-based adsorbents, specifically modified with furan-thiosemicarbazide (FTC), to enhance their selectivity for Ru3+ ions. By cross-linking the Ru3+/FTC-modified cellulose (FTC-CE) complex with a bis(maleimido)ethane (BME) cross-linker, we created a Ru3+ ion-imprinted sorbent (Ru-II-CE) that exhibits a strong affinity and selectivity for Ru3+ ions. The synthesis process was thoroughly characterized using NMR and FTIR spectroscopy, while the surface morphology of the sorbent particles was examined with scanning electron microscopy. The Ru-II-CE sorbent demonstrated exceptional selectivity for Ru3+ among competing metal cations, achieving optimal adsorption at a pH of 5. Its adsorption capacity was notably high at 215 mg/g, fitting well with the Langmuir isotherm model, and it followed pseudo-second-order kinetics. This study highlights the potential of FTC-CE for targeted Ru3+ removal from wastewater, offering a promising solution for heavy metal decontamination.

Molecularly imprinted polymer sheathed mesoporous silica tube as SPME fiber coating for determination of tobacco-specific nitrosamines in water

Tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNAs) are probably carcinogenic disinfection byproducts eliciting health risk concerns. The determination and surveillance of TSNAs in water is still cumbersome due to the lack of advanced sample preparation methods. Herein, we prepared a solid phase microextraction (SPME) fiber coated with the molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) sheathed mesoporous silica tube (MST) composite material, and developed a highly efficient, selective, and sensitive method for the determination of five TSNAs in water. Benefiting from the TSNAs-specific recognition of MIP and the increased specific surface area derived from MST, the MIP@MST fiber exhibited excellent extraction performance for TSNAs, which was much superior to the commercially available SPME fibers. By coupling to high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS), the outstanding analytical merits such as low method detection limits (ranging 0.1-6.7 ng L-1) and good reproducibility (intra-fiber and inter-fiber relative standard deviations ranging 4.1 %-11.6 % and 3.5 %-12.2 %, respectively) were achieved with the consumption of 8 mL water sample and 100 μL methanol solvent in 50 min. The feasibility of the SPME-HPLC-MS/MS method was demonstrated in tap water and chloraminated source water, with relative recoveries for the five TSNAs ranging from 85.2 % to 108.5 %. In result, none of the TSNAs were found in the tap water samples, while 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK) and 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-Butanol (NNAL) were detected in the chloraminated source water samples. The rapid and convenient SPME-HPLC-MS/MS method developed in this study offers a powerful tool for monitoring TSNAs in water.
