Effect of Water Adsorption on Lubricating Film Stability in Slippery Coatings

The absorption of water by slippery coatings is a ubiquitous phenomenon that arises due to small but finite water dissolution during the contact of aqueous media with lubricants. In this study, using the concept of surface forces, we have analyzed the influence of trace amounts of water in lubricants on the stability of slippery coatings for both coatings with hydrophilic porous bases, prone to form hydrogen bonds with water, and those with hydrophobic porous bases. To perform such analysis, we have considered for the first time the electrostatic problem of the distribution of the electric potential and electric field strength in stratified films that contain two thin dielectric layers imitating the lubricant and a hydrophobic layer sandwiched between the porous substrate and air or water. Based on the developed approach, the equations for the calculation of the excess free energy and the disjoining pressure, associated with water dissolution in the lubricant film, were derived. An analysis of the excess film energy and the contribution of the image interaction to the disjoining pressure isotherm indicates that the dissolved water can both stabilize and destabilize the oil film, depending on the ratio of the static and dynamic dielectric permittivities of the lubricant and the phases confining the film. The results of calculations and simple experiments carried out here indicate much better water contact stability of silicone films impregnating a hydrophobized porous substrate than films impregnating a hydrophilic porous substrate. The obtained results indicate the preference for using the hydrophobic bases for the fabrication of long-lived slippery coatings characterized by better preservation of slippery functional properties under conditions of lubricant depletion and prolonged contact with water.

Molecular dynamics study of wetting of alkanes on water: from high temperature to the supercooled region and the influence of second inflection points of interfacial tensions

To explore the wetting behavior of alkanes on bulk water interfaces, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were carried out for united-atom PYS alkane models, and for SPC/E and TIP4P/2005 water models over a wide temperature range. The MD results at each temperature were used to find (1) the surface tension of the alkanes (octane, nonane) and water, and (2) the interfacial tensions of the alkane-water systems. These quantities were then used to calculate the spreading coefficient (S) and contact angle (θc) for each alkane on water. At higher temperatures, the contact angle of octane and nonane on water is found to behave in accord with conventional expectations, i.e., it decreases with increasing temperature for both water models as each system approaches the usual high-temperature transition to perfect wetting. At lower temperatures, we found an unusual temperature dependence of S and θc for each PYS alkane on SPC/E water. In contrast to conventional expectations, θc decreases with a decrease in the temperature. For octane-SPC/E water, this unusual behavior of θc occurs due to the presence of second inflection points (SIP) in the vapor-water and the octane-water interfacial tensions, whereas the SIP effect is much less important for the nonane-water system. The unusual temperature dependence of θc observed for nonane on SPC/E water is also found for nonane on TIP4P/2005 water. On the other hand, such unusual wetting behavior has not been observed in the PYS octane-TIP4P/2005 water system, except possibly for the two lowest temperatures studied.

Image Charge Effects in the Wetting Behavior of Alkanes on Water with Accounting for Water Solubility

Different types of surface forces, acting in the films of pentane, hexane, and heptane on water are discussed. It is shown that an important contribution to the surface forces originates from the solubility of water in alkanes. The equations for the distribution of electric potential inside the film are derived within the Debye-Hückel approximation, taking into account the polarization of the film boundaries by discrete charges at water-alkane interface and by the dipoles of water molecules dissolved in the film. On the basis of above equations we estimate the image charge contribution to the surface forces, excess free energy, isotherms of water adsorption in alkane film, and the total isotherms of disjoining pressure in alkane film. The results indicate the essential influence of water/alkane interface charging on the disjoining pressure in alkane films, and the wettability of water surface by different alkanes is discussed.

Image-charge forces in thin interlayers due to surface charges in electrolyte

The surface forces arising in wetting films of nonpolar liquids or in thin air interlayers between an electrolyte and a nonpolar medium in the case of discrete charging of the dielectric-electrolyte interface are considered. The contributions of polarization effects to the distribution of the electrostatic potential in the three contacting media were calculated. Within the Debye-Hückel approximation, the analytical solutions were derived for the disjoining pressure in thin films, for the case of either dilute or relatively concentrated electrolyte solutions in the aforementioned systems. Analysis of the analytical and numerical results demonstrated that for dilute solutions the contribution of image forces to the disjoining pressure may significantly exceed the van der Waals forces for films from a few to tens of nanometers thick.

Surface tension of water in the presence of perfluorocarbon vapors

Fluorocarbons are highly hydrophobic, biocompatible compounds with a variety of medical applications. Despite significant interest, the study of interfacial properties of fluorocarbons in aqueous systems has received limited attention. In this study, we investigate the influence of perfluoropentane and perfluorohexane vapors on the surface tension of water at room temperature. The results show a substantial decrease in the surface tension of water in the presence of perfluorocarbon vapors. In the investigated range of partial pressures up to the saturation value, a linear correlation between the surface tension and the partial pressure was found. This suggests that an adsorbed perfluorocarbon layer is formed on the surface of water. For comparison, the effect of the perfluorocarbon vapor on the surface tension of methanol was also investigated and a similar dependence was observed. Our results indicate that the stability and dynamic transitions of fluorocarbon colloids, which may be dispersed under physiological conditions as microdroplets, bubbles, or their combination, are likely affected by the composition of liquid and gas phases.

Wetting and surface forces

In this review we discuss the fundamental role of surface forces, with a particular emphasis on the effect of the disjoining pressure, in establishing the wetting regime in the three phase systems with both plane and curved geometry. The special attention is given to the conditions of the formation of wetting/adsorption liquid films on the surface of poorly wetted substrate and the possibility of their thermodynamic equilibrium with bulk liquid. The calculations of contact angles on the basis of the isotherms of disjoining pressure and the difference in wettability of flat and highly curved surfaces are discussed. Mechanisms of wetting hysteresis, related to the action of surface forces, are considered.
