Recent advances and perspectives in solar photothermal conversion and storage systems: A review

Developing high-efficiency solar photothermal conversion and storage (SPCS) technology is significant in solving the imbalance between the supply and demand of solar energy utilization in time and space. Aiming at the current research status in the field of SPCS, this review thoroughly examines the phase change materials and substrates in SPCS systems. It elucidates the design principles and methods of SPCS integrated composites. Comparatively, it analyzes the parameters of various types of SPCS composites in terms of photothermal conversion, thermal conductivity, energy density, and cycling stability. Additionally, the review discusses the trade-offs between each parameter to achieve the most optimal effect of SPCS. By sorting out the current status of the application of SPCS technology in solar thermal/photovoltaic, aerospace, buildings, textile, and other industries, this analysis clarifies the requirements for various latent heat, phase change temperature, and other properties under different environmental conditions. Through a comprehensive discussion of SPCS technology, this paper accurately captures the development trend of efficiently and comprehensively utilizing solar energy by analyzing existing scientific problems. It identifies bottlenecks in SPCS technology and suggests future development directions that need focused attention. The insights gained from this analysis may provide a theoretical basis for designing strategies, enhancing performance, and promoting the application of SPCS.

Metal-Oxide Heterojunction: From Material Process to Neuromorphic Applications

As technologies like the Internet, artificial intelligence, and big data evolve at a rapid pace, computer architecture is transitioning from compute-intensive to memory-intensive. However, traditional von Neumann architectures encounter bottlenecks in addressing modern computational challenges. The emulation of the behaviors of a synapse at the device level by ionic/electronic devices has shown promising potential in future neural-inspired and compact artificial intelligence systems. To address these issues, this review thoroughly investigates the recent progress in metal-oxide heterostructures for neuromorphic applications. These heterostructures not only offer low power consumption and high stability but also possess optimized electrical characteristics via interface engineering. The paper first outlines various synthesis methods for metal oxides and then summarizes the neuromorphic devices using these materials and their heterostructures. More importantly, we review the emerging multifunctional applications, including neuromorphic vision, touch, and pain systems. Finally, we summarize the future prospects of neuromorphic devices with metal-oxide heterostructures and list the current challenges while offering potential solutions. This review provides insights into the design and construction of metal-oxide devices and their applications for neuromorphic systems.

Role of support bio-templating in Ni/Al2O3 catalysts for hydrogen production via dry reforming of methane

Bio-templating, a synthetic approach inspired by nature, is an emerging area in material engineering. In this study, waste leaves of Sycamore were utilized as a bio-template for producing alumina support to prepare catalyst. The performance of Ni and Ce impregnated on bio-templated alumina support was investigated in dry reforming of methane for the first time. The effect of process and catalytic variables were examined in detail. The results showed that impregnation of 20% Ni and 3% Ce on the bio-templated alumina led to improved Ni dispersion and achieving the maximum CH4 conversion of 88.7%, CO2 conversion of 78.5%, and H2 yield of 85.3%, compared to 84.4%, 75.6% and 83.4% for the non-templated catalyst at 700 °C, respectively. Detailed characterization of the catalysts revealed that the enhanced performance in the bio-templated catalyst could be attributed to smaller Ni particles, superior dispersion of Ni on the support, the mesoporous structure of alumina, and the larger surface area of support. Furthermore, analysis of the used catalyst showed reduced coke formation on the catalyst surface and high stability of bio-templated catalysts, highlighting the main advantage of bio-templated catalysts over non-templated ones. The findings presented in this study contribute to the potential future applications of bio-templating materials and shed light on the rational design of bio-templating materials.
