Combining wide-angle and small-angle scattering to study colloids and self-assembly

The structure of water: A historical perspective

Attempts to understand the molecular structure of water were first made well over a century ago. Looking back at the various attempts, it is illuminating to see how these were conditioned by the state of knowledge of chemistry and physics at the time and the experimental and theoretical tools then available. Progress in the intervening years has been facilitated by not only conceptual and theoretical advances in physics and chemistry but also the development of experimental techniques and instrumentation. Exploitation of powerful computational methods in interpreting what at first sight may seem impenetrable experimental data has led us to the consistent and detailed picture we have today of not only the structure of liquid water itself and how it changes with temperature and pressure but also its interactions with other molecules, in particular those relevant to water's role in important chemical and biological processes. Much remains to be done in the latter areas, but the experimental and computational techniques that now enable us to do what might reasonably be termed "liquid state crystallography" have opened the door to make possible further advances. Consequently, we now have the tools to explore further the role of water in those processes that underpin life itself-the very prospect that inspired Bernal to develop his ideas on the structure of liquids in general and of water in particular.

Coarse-grained empirical potential structure refinement: Application to a reverse aqueous micelle

Conventional atomistic computer simulations, involving perhaps up to 10⁶atoms, can achieve length-scales on the order of a few 10s of nm. Yet many heterogeneous systems, such as colloids, nano-structured materials, or biological systems, can involve correlations over distances up 100s of nm, perhaps even 1μm in some instances. For such systems it is necessary to invoke coarse-graining, where single atoms are replaced by agglomerations of atoms, usually represented as spheres, in order for the simulation to be performed within a practical computer memory and time scale. Small angle scattering and reflectivity measurements, both X-ray and neutron, are routinely used to investigate structure in these systems, and traditionally the data have been interpreted in terms of discrete objects, such as spheres, sheets, and cylinders, and combinations thereof. Here we combine the coarse-grained computer simulation approach with neutron small angle scattering to refine the structure of a heterogeneous system, in the present case a reverse aqueous micelle of sodium-dioctyl sulfosuccinate (AOT) and iso-octane. The method closely follows empirical potential structure refinement and involves deriving an empirical interaction potential from the scattering data. As in traditional coarse-grained methods, individual atoms are replaced by spherical density profiles, which, unlike real atoms, can inter-penetrate to a significant extent. The method works over an arbitrary range of length-scales, but is limited to around 2 orders of magnitude in distance above a specified dimension. The smallest value for this dimension is of order 1nm, but the largest dimension is arbitrary. Deep eutectic-solvothermal synthesis of nanostructured ceria

Ceria is a technologically important material with applications in catalysis, emissions control and solid-oxide fuel cells. Nanostructured ceria becomes profoundly more active due to its enhanced surface area to volume ratio, reactive surface oxygen vacancy concentration and superior oxygen storage capacity. Here we report the synthesis of nanostructured ceria using the green Deep Eutectic Solvent reline, which allows morphology and porosity control in one of the less energy-intensive routes reported to date. Using wide Q-range liquid-phase neutron diffraction, we elucidate the mechanism of reaction at a molecular scale at considerably milder conditions than the conventional hydrothermal synthetic routes. The reline solvent plays the role of a latent supramolecular catalyst where the increase in reaction rate from solvent-driven pre-organization of the reactants is most significant. This fundamental understanding of deep eutectic-solvothermal methodology will enable future developments in low-temperature synthesis of nanostructured ceria, facilitating its large-scale manufacturing using green, economic, non-toxic solvents.
