Reflections of idiographic long-term memory characteristics in resting-state neuroimaging data

Our brains sense the future through a new quantum-like implicit learning mechanism

BACKGROUND

Imagine if our brains could unconsciously predict future events. This study explores this concept, presenting evidence for an inherent 'foreseeing' ability, termed anomalous cognition (AC). We introduce a new experimentally verifiable approach to explain anomalous information anticipation (AIA), a type of AC, based on an innovative, quantum-like model of implicit learning, grounded in Nonlocal Plasticity Theory (NPT).

METHODS

Our research involved 203 participants using methods such as continuous flash suppression, random dot motion, and advanced 3D EEG neuroimaging, along with IBM quantum random event generators for precise measurements across 144 trials. These trials tested contingencies between undetectable sensory stimuli and dot movements, focusing on participants' prediction abilities. The design conditions were strictly experimental, violating fundamental classical learning principles, particularly reflex conditioning. If these principles were immutable, their violation would prevent any systematic behavioral changes, resulting in random responses. This violation was implemented through two quantum physics concepts: the mathematical principle of nonlocality and entanglement.

RESULTS

Despite the sensory stimulus being inaccessible, our results showed a significant prediction between the contingencies and an increase in AIA accuracy, with explained variances between 25 % and 48 %. EEG findings supported this, showing a positive link between brain activity in specific regions and AIA success. Electrochemical activations were detected in the posterior occipital cortex, the intraparietal sulcus, and the medial temporal gyri. AIA hits exceeded the threshold value corresponding to one standard deviation above the expected mean, showing moderate effect sizes in the experimental group (Cohen's d = 0.461). Analyzing the learning curve using the derivation technique, we identified the acceleration point of the wave function, indicating systematic implicit learning. This result showed that from repetition 63 onwards, AIA hits increased significantly.

CONCLUSIONS

The results suggest that, despite violating fundamental classical learning principles, cognitive processes produced changes in participants' responses susceptible to neuromodulation, considering quantum physics principles of nonlocality and entanglement (both present in NPT). We discuss (a) why the priming effect does not explain the significant results; (b) the potential discovery of a new form of quantum-like implicit learning, which could scientifically resolve phenomena associated with anomalous cognitions (e.g., AIA); and (c) future research directions, including potential applications and clinical impact.

Reliance on Episodic vs. Procedural Systems in Decision-Making Depends on Individual Differences in Their Relative Neural Efficiency

Experiential decision-making can be explained as a result of either memory-based or reinforcement-based processes. Here, for the first time, we show that individual preferences between a memory-based and a reinforcement-based strategy, even when the two are functionally equivalent in terms of expected payoff, are adaptively shaped by individual differences in resting-state brain connectivity between the corresponding brain regions. Using computational cognitive models to identify which mechanism was most likely used by each participant, we found that individuals with comparatively stronger connectivity between memory regions prefer a memory-based strategy, while individuals with comparatively stronger connectivity between sensorimotor and habit-formation regions preferentially rely on a reinforcement-based strategy. These results suggest that human decision-making is adaptive and sensitive to the neural costs associated with different strategies.

Allocating Mental Effort in Cognitive Tasks: A Model of Motivation in the ACT-R Cognitive Architecture

Motivation is the driving force that influences people's behaviors and interacts with many cognitive functions. Computationally, motivation is represented as a cost-benefit analysis that weighs efforts and rewards in order to choose the optimal actions. Shenhav and colleagues proposed an elegant theory, the Expected Value of Control (EVC), which describes the relationship between cognitive efforts, costs, and rewards. In this paper, we propose a more fine-grained and detailed motivation framework that incorporates the principles of EVC into the ACT-R cognitive architecture. Specifically, motivation is represented as a specific slot in the Goal buffer with a corresponding scalar value, M, that is translated into the reward value Rt that is delivered when the goal is reached. This implementation is tested in two models. The first model is a high-level model that reproduces the EVC predictions with abstract actions. The second model is an augmented version of an existing ACT-R model of the Simon task. The motivation mechanism is shown to permit optimal effort allocation and reproduce known phenomena. Finally, the broader implications of our mechanism are discussed.

Vigilant attention mediates the association between resting EEG alpha oscillations and word learning ability

Individuals exhibit considerable variability in their capacity to learn and retain new information, including novel vocabulary. Prior research has established the importance of vigilance and electroencephalogram (EEG) alpha rhythm in the learning process. However, the interplay between vigilant attention, EEG alpha oscillations, and an individual's word learning ability (WLA) remains elusive. To address this knowledge gap, here we conducted two experiments with a total of 140 young and middle-aged adults who underwent resting EEG recordings prior to completing a paired-associate word learning task and a psychomotor vigilance test (PVT). The results of both experiments consistently revealed significant positive correlations between WLA and resting EEG alpha oscillations in the occipital and frontal regions. Furthermore, the association between resting EEG alpha oscillations and WLA was mediated by vigilant attention, as measured by the PVT. These findings provide compelling evidence supporting the crucial role of vigilant attention in linking EEG alpha oscillations to an individual's learning ability.

Qualitative Invariant Effects Arise from Neural Constraints: Common Architecture and Sources of Individual Differences

The distinction between qualitative and quantitative effects can be meaningfully related to the distinction between "architecture" and "model" in computational cognitive science. In turn, this distinction can be related to differences between the invariant systems-level organization of the human brain and individual differences in structural and functional activity. Taken together, this presents an iterative new way to answer Newell's "20 Questions" problem and to systematize psychological effects as belonging to either architecture or the individual variations within it. Although some limits to this approach exist (for example, Individual differences in strategy might affect whether an effect is qualitative or quantitative), the approach might also shed light on how to account for special populations (neurological or psychological patients) within the same framework.

When Fear Shrinks the Brain: A Computational Model of the Effects of Posttraumatic Stress on Hippocampal Volume

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric disorder often characterized by the unwanted re-experiencing of a traumatic event through nightmares, flashbacks, and/or intrusive memories. This paper presents a neurocomputational model using the ACT-R cognitive architecture that simulates intrusive memory retrieval following a potentially traumatic event (PTE) and predicts hippocampal volume changes observed in PTSD. Memory intrusions were captured in the ACT-R rational analysis framework by weighting the posterior probability of re-encoding traumatic events into memory with an emotional intensity term I to capture the degree to which an event was perceived as dangerous or traumatic. It is hypothesized that (1) increasing the intensity I of a PTE will increase the odds of memory intrusions, and (2) increased frequency of intrusions will result in a concurrent decrease in hippocampal size. A series of simulations were run and it was found that I had a significant effect on the probability of experiencing traumatic memory intrusions following a PTE. The model also found that I was a significant predictor of hippocampal volume reduction, where the mean and range of simulated volume loss match results of existing meta-analyses. The authors believe that this is the first model to both describe traumatic memory retrieval and provide a mechanistic account of changes in hippocampal volume, capturing one plausible link between PTSD and hippocampal volume.
