Recent advances in gold Janus nanomaterials: Preparation and application

Gold Janus nanomaterials have a tremendous significance for the novel bifunctional materials, significantly expanding the application scope of gold nanomaterials, especially Janus gold-thiol coordination polymer due to their exceptional biological characteristics, stability, plasmon effect, etc. The recent research on Janus gold nanoparticles and monolayer films of preparation and application has been summarized and in this review. To begin, we briefly introduce overview of Janus nanomaterials which received intense attention, outline current research trends, and detail the preparation and application of gold nanomaterials. Subsequently, we present comprehensively detailing fabrication strategies and applications of Janus gold nanoparticles. Additionally, we survey recent studies on the Janus gold nano-thickness films and point out the outstanding advantage of application on the tunable surface plasmon resonance, high sensitivity of surface-enhanced Raman scattering and electrical analysis fields. Finally, we discuss the emerging trends in Janus gold nanomaterials and address the associated challenges, thereby providing a comprehensive overview of this area of research.

Fabrication of Functionalized UiO-66 Anchored on Disorderly Layered Clinoptilolite via Surfactant-Assisted Induction for Selective Adsorption of CO2 and CH4

The amine (NH₂)-functionalized UiO-66 was successfully anchored on disorderly layered clinoptilolite (CP) via surfactant (poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP))-assisted induction. The structural features and physicochemical parameters of the resultant UiO-66-on-CPs were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, scanning/transmission electron microscopy (SEM/TEM) images, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra, N₂ sorption isotherms, and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) patterns. The results demonstrated that the growth of UiO-66-NH₂ nanoparticles facilitated the disorder degree of the crystal plane of CP along the a-axis, while the addition of PEG in the hydrothermal synthesis system of CP was conducive to the formation of a flower-like microstructure and the introduction of PVP was beneficial to the nucleation and growth of UiO-66-NH₂ nanoparticles with a small size (40 nm) on the surfaces of the obtained CP-PEG lamellas. Finally, the gas-selective adsorption and separation performances of CO₂ and CH₄ were evaluated using the synthesized disorderly layered UiO-66-on-CP heterostructures as adsorbents, indicating that the NH₂-functionalized UiO-66-on-CP exhibited a superior selective factor (3.66) of CO₂/CH₄. These results elucidated that the proposed approach is a promising strategy for constructing MOF-on-zeolite heterostructures, which may open an avenue to expand CP application and improve their performance.

Design, Synthesis and Evaluation of Novel Antimicrobial Polymers Based on the Inclusion of Polyethylene Glycol/TiO2 Nanocomposites in Cyclodextrin as Drug Carriers for Sulfaguanidine

Polymers and their composites have recently attracted attention in both pharmaceutical and biomedical applications. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is a versatile polymer extensively used in medicine. Herein, three novel PEG-based polymers that are pseudopolyrotaxane (PEG/α-CD) (1), titania–nanocomposite (PEG/TiO₂NPs) (2), and pseudopolyrotaxane–titania–nanocomposite (PEG/α-CD/TiO₂NPs) (3), were synthesized and characterized. The chemical structure, surface morphology, and optical properties of the newly materials were examined by FT-IR, ¹H-NMR, SEM, and UV–Vis., respectively. The prepared polymers were used as drug carriers of sulfaguanidine as PEG/α-CD/Drug (4), PEG/TiO₂NPs/Drug (5), and PEG/α-CD/TiO₂NPs/Drug (6). The influence of these drug-carrying formulations on the physical and chemical characteristics of sulfaguanidine including pharmacokinetic response, solubility, and tissue penetration was explored. Evaluation of the antibacterial and antibiofilm effect of sulfaguanidine was tested before and after loading onto the prepared polymers against some Gram-negative and positive bacteria (E. coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)), as well. The results of this work turned out to be very promising as they confirmed that loading sulfaguanidine to the newly designed polymers not only showed superior antibacterial and antibiofilm efficacy compared to the pure drug, but also modified the properties of the sulfaguanidine drug itself.
