Abstract
The design of self-healing agents is a topic of important scientific interest for the development of high-performance materials for coating applications. Herein, two series of copolymers of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) with either the hydrophilic N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAM) or the epoxy group-bearing hydrophobic glycidyl methacrylate were synthesized and studied as potential self-healing agents of waterborne polyurethanes (WPU). The molar percentage of DMAM or GMA units in the P(HEMA-co-DMAMy) and P(HEMA-co-GMAy) copolymers varies from 0% up to 80%. WPU/polymer composites with a 10% w/w or 20% w/w copolymer content were prepared with the facile method of solution mixing. Thanks to the presence of P(HEMA-co-DMAMy) copolymers, WPU/P(HEMA-co-DMAMy) composite films exhibited surface hydrophilicity (water contact angle studies), and tendency for water uptake (water sorption kinetics studies). In contrast, the surfaces of the WPU/P(HEMA-co-GMAy) composites were less hydrophilic compared with the WPU/P(HEMA-co-DMAMy) ones. The room-temperature, water-mediated self-healing ability of these composites was investigated through addition of water drops on the damaged area. Both copolymer series exhibited healing abilities, with the hydrophilic P(HEMA-co-DMAMy) copolymers being more promising. This green healing procedure, in combination with the simple film fabrication process and simple healing triggering, makes these materials attractive for practical applications.

Abstract
A novel poly((2-dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate-glycidyl methacrylate)-alginate (P(DMAEMA-GMA)alginate) semi-IPN hydrogel was synthesized via radical polymerization of the double bonds and ring-opening of the epoxy groups without using catalyst and cross-linker. (1)H-NMR, FT-IR and DSC data were consistent with the expected structures for the hydrogels. The interior morphology of the hydrogels was also investigated by SEM. The swelling ratio and compressive strength of the hydrogels were measured. The semi-IPN hydrogel had pH and temperature sensitivity, and pH-sensitive points of all hydrogels were found to be at pH 5.0. The release behavior of the model drug, aminophylline, was found to be dependent on the hydrogel composition and environment pH, which manifests that these materials have potential applications as intelligent drug carriers.

Abstract
An off-lattice Monte Carlo method was developed to examine the pore blocking phenomena in cross-flow microfiltration. Membranes were generated by randomly distributed pores with a given pore size distribution on a two-dimensional plane. The permeability of particles through the membrane pores was calculated, and the effects of crucial factors on the reduction of permeability were discussed. Reasonable fouling rules for simulations were examined and selected. At the initial stage the flux decreases sharply as the filtration time increases and then a steady state is reached. The results fit the pore blocking mechanism well. The simulation model developed in this study can be effectively used for analyzing a number of factors influencing physical fouling of membranes.

Abstract
The ability to immobilize proteins with high binding capacities on surfaces while maintaining their activity is critical for protein microarrays and other biotechnological applications. We employed poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) brushes as templates to immobilize ribonuclease A (RNase A), which is commonly used to remove RNA from plasmid DNA preparations. The brushes are grown by surface-anchored atom-transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiators. RNase A was immobilized by both covalent esterification and a high binding capacity metal-ion complexation method to PAA brushes. The polymer brushes immobilized 30 times more enzyme compared to self-assembled monolayers. As the thickness of the brush increases, the surface density of the RNase A increases monotonically. The immobilization was investigated by ellipsometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS). The activity of the immobilized RNase A was determined using UV absorbance. As much as 11.0 microg/cm(2) of RNase A was bound to PAA brushes by metal-ion complexation compared to 5.8 microg/cm(2) by covalent immobilization which is 30 and 16 times the estimated mass bound in a monolayer. The calculated diffusion coefficient D was 0.63 x 10(-14) cm(2)/s for metal-ion complexation and 0.71 x 10(-14) cm(2)/s for covalent immobilization. Similar values of D indicate that the binding kinetics is similar, but the thermodynamic equilibrium coverage varies with the binding chemistry. Immobilization kinetics and thermodynamics were characterized by ellipsometry for both methods. A maximum relative activity of 0.70-0.80 was reached between five and nine monolayers of the immobilized enzyme. However, the relative activity for covalent immobilization was greater than that of metal-ion complexation. Covalent esterification resulted in similar temperature dependence as free enzyme, whereas metal-ion complexation showed no temperature dependence indicating a significant change in conformation.

Abstract
In the present study, we generated a polyethylene surface coated with a gradient of quantum dots for use in imaging experiments. The polyethylene surface was first treated with increasing coronal discharge along its length. Next, the surface was reacted with branched polyethyleneimine followed by biotin to produce a polyethylene surface with a gradient of biotin. Finally, the biotin-coated surface was reacted with streptavidin-coated quantum dots. Fluorescent imaging showed that the fluorescence intensity from the quantum dots gradually increased along its length. Such quantum-dot-modified gradient polyethylene surfaces may be useful in biomedical analyses.

Abstract
Crosslinking copolymer microbeads with a diameter range of 100-150 microm were synthesized by suspension copolymerization of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA), acrylamide (AM) and N,N'-methylene bisacrylamide (MBA). Subsequently, polyethyleneimine (PEI) was grafted on the surfaces of the terpolymer microbeads GMA/AM/MBA via the ring-opening reaction of the epoxy groups, and the grafting microbeads PEI-GMA/AM/MBA were prepared. In this paper, the adsorption property of the grafting microbeads for bilirubin was mainly investigated, and the effects of various factors, such as pH value, ionic strength and grafting degree of PEI on the surface of grafting microbeads and the adsorption capacity of the grafting microbeads for bilirubin were examined. The batch adsorption experiment results show that by right of the action of grafted polyamine macromolecules PEI, the grafting microbeads PEI-GMA/AM/MBA have quite strong adsorption ability for bilirubin; the isotherm adsorption conforms to Freundlich equation. The pH value of the medium affects the adsorption capacity greatly, As in the nearly neutral solutions with pH 6, the grafting microbeads have the strongest adsorption ability for bilirubin, whereas in acidic and basic solutions their adsorption ability is weak. The ionic strength hardly affects the adsorption ability of the grafting microbeads. The grafting degree of PEI on the surfaces of the grafting microbeads also has a great effect on the adsorption capacity, and higher the grafting degree of PEI on the surface of the microbead PEI-GMA/AM/MBA, the stronger is the adsorption ability of the microbeads.

Abstract
Bilirubin adsorption on self-assembled phospholipid bilayers was studied using quartz crystal microbalance, and factors influencing its adsorption such as pH, temperature, and solution ionic strength were discussed in detail. The results show the amount of adsorbed bilirubin on self-assembled phospholipid bilayers is small at higher temperature and large at higher pH and solution ionic strength, and the adsorption kinetic parameter estimated from the in situ frequency measurement is (1.8+/-0.27)x10(6) M(-1) (mean +/- S.D.). With the present method, the desorption of adsorbed bilirubin caused by human serum albumin and the photoinduced decomposition of adsorbed bilirubin under light illumination were also examined. QCM measurement provides a useful method for monitoring the adsorption/desorption process of bilirubin on self-assembled phospholipid bilayers.
