Abstract
The presence of heavy metal ions in polluted wastewater represents a serious threat to human health, making proper disposal extremely important. The utilization of nanofiltration (NF) membranes has emerged as one of the most effective methods of heavy metal ion removal from wastewater due to their efficient operation, adaptable design, and affordability. NF membranes created from advanced materials are becoming increasingly popular due to their ability to depollute wastewater in a variety of circumstances. Tailoring the NF membrane's properties to efficiently remove heavy metal ions from wastewater, interfacial polymerization, and grafting techniques, along with the addition of nano-fillers, have proven to be the most effective modification methods. This paper presents a review of the modification processes and NF membrane performances for the removal of heavy metals from wastewater, as well as the application of these membranes for heavy metal ion wastewater treatment. Very high treatment efficiencies, such as 99.90%, have been achieved using membranes composed of polyvinyl amine (PVAM) and glutaraldehyde (GA) for Cr3+ removal from wastewater. However, nanofiltration membranes have certain drawbacks, such as fouling of the NF membrane. Repeated cleaning of the membrane influences its lifetime.

Abstract
In this paper, a circular economy approach with the adsorption and desorption of heavy metal (HM) ions—i.e., lead (Pb2+), chromium (CrT), and mercury (Hg2+)—from aqueous solutions was studied. Specific and selective binding of HM ions was performed on stabilized and amino-functionalized iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (γ-Fe2O3@NH2 NPs) from an aqueous solution at pH 4 and 7. For this purpose, γ-Fe2O3@NH2 NPs were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), specific surface area (BET), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), EDXS, and zeta potential measurements (ζ). The effects of different adsorbent amounts (mads = 20/45/90 mg) and the type of anions (NO3−, Cl−, SO42−) on adsorption efficiency were also tested. The desorption was performed with 0.1 M HNO3. The results showed improvement of adsorption efficiency for CrT, Pb2+, and Hg2+ ions at pH 7 by 45 mg of g-Fe2O3@NH2 NPs, and the sequence was as follows: CrT > Hg2+ > Pb2+, with adsorption capacities of 90.4 mg/g, 85.6 mg/g, and 83.6 mg/g, respectively. The desorption results showed the possibility for the reuse of γ-Fe2O3@NH2 NPs with HNO3, as the desorption efficiency was 100% for Hg2+ ions, 96.7% for CrT, and 91.3% for Pb2+.

Abstract
To increase fog collection efficiency in a fiber system, controlled wetting properties are desirable. In this work, hydrophobic (PA11) and hydrophilic (PA6) polyamides were tested to verify the surface wetting effect on fog water collection rate. Highly porous fiber meshes were obtained from both polymer solutions. Randomly oriented fibers with average diameter of approximately 150 nm were observed with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Despite the similar geometry and zeta potential of PA6 and PA11 meshes, it was shown that the hydrophobic PA11 nanofibers are more effective at water collection than hydrophilic PA6. These results indicate that wetting properties of electrospun nanofiber mesh have a significant effect on the process of draining from the mesh, as discussed in this paper. The results obtained are crucial for designing more efficient fog water collectors that include nanofibers in their construction.

Runge-Kutta Numerical Method Followed by Richardson's Extrapolation for Efficient Ion Rejection Reassessment of a Novel Defect-Free Synthesized Nanofiltration Membrane. MEMBRANES 2021; 11:membranes11020130. Abstract
A defect-free, loose, and strong layer consisting of zirconium (Zr) nanoparticles (NPs) has been successfully established on a polyacrylonitrile (PAN) ultrafiltration substrate by an in-situ formation process. The resulting organic–inorganic nanofiltration (NF) membrane, NF-PANZr, has been accurately characterized not only with regard to its properties but also its structure by the atomic force microscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive spectroscopy. A sophisticated computing model consisting of the Runge–Kutta method followed by Richardson extrapolation was applied in this investigation to solve the extended Nernst–Planck equations, which govern the solute particles’ transport across the active layer of NF-PANZr. A smart, adaptive step-size routine is chosen for this simple and robust method, also known as RK4 (fourth-order Runge–Kutta). The NF-PANZr membrane was less performant toward monovalent ions, and its rejection rate for multivalent ions reached 99.3%. The water flux of the NF-PANZr membrane was as high as 58 L · m−2 · h−1. Richardson’s extrapolation was then used to get a better approximation of Cl− and Mg2+ rejection, the relative errors were, respectively, 0.09% and 0.01% for Cl− and Mg2+. While waiting for the rise and expansion of machine learning in the prediction of rejection performance, we strongly recommend the development of better NF models and further validation of existing ones.

Abstract
Escalating global water scarcity necessitates high-performance desalination membranes, for which fundamental understanding of structure-property-performance relationships is required. In this study, we comprehensively assess the ionization behavior of nanoporous polyamide selective layers in state-of-the-art nanofiltration (NF) membranes. In these films, residual carboxylic acids and amines influence permeability and selectivity by imparting hydrophilicity and ionizable moieties that can exclude coions. We utilize layered interfacial polymerization to prepare physically and chemically similar selective layers of controlled thickness. We then demonstrate location-dependent ionization of carboxyl groups in NF polyamide films. Specifically, only surface carboxyl groups ionize under neutral pH, whereas interior carboxyl ionization requires pH >9. Conversely, amine ionization behaves invariably across the film. First-principles simulations reveal that the low permittivity of nanoconfined water drives the anomalous carboxyl ionization behavior. Furthermore, we report that interior carboxyl ionization could improve the water-salt permselectivity of NF membranes over fourfold, suggesting that interior charge density could be an important tool to enhance the selectivity of polyamide membranes. Our findings highlight the influence of nanoconfinement on membrane transport properties and provide enhanced fundamental understanding of ionization that could enable novel membrane design.

Abstract
Electrochemical capacitor and capacitive deionization store energy through the interface layer formed between electrodes and electrolytes. The crystalline form and surface potential of the oxide electrode can be changed in order to improve the capacitance. By characterizing the surface property and crystalline form of the TiO2 thin-film electrode at different sintering temperatures, it is showed that each electrode has its own surface potential which is affected by the crystalline structure. At elevated sintering temperature, TiO2 transfers from anatase to rutile with an increased surface potential. The electrochemical tests show that the electrode capacitance increases from 19.50 to 41.82 mF/cm2. Therefore, rutile TiO2 has a higher surface potential and better capacitive performance when used on a positive electrode compared with anatase TiO2. In general, the relation between the surface potential, the crystalline forms, and the capacitive performance is achieved in this work. We hope it can promote the investigation of oxide materials in the application for electrochemical capacitors and capacitive deionization.

Abstract
The analysis of the surface zeta potential (SZP) opens up new possibilities in the characterization of various materials used for scientific or industrial applications. It provides at the same time insight into the material surface chemistry and elucidates the interactions with charged species in the aqueous test solution. For this purpose, an accurate, reliable and repeatable analysis of the SZP is the key factor. This work focuses on a detailed and systematic comparison of two electrokinetic techniques, i.e. the mapping of the electro-osmotic flow (EOF) and the measurement of the streaming potential (SP), for the surface zeta potential (SZP) determination of several materials with varying properties. Both techniques have advantages as well as drawbacks. The applicability of latex polymer material and inorganic tracer particles at varying ionic strength, the interaction between oppositely charged tracer particles and solid surfaces, the assessment of the pH dependence of the SZP and the isoelectric point (IEP), and the effects of sample porosity and conductance have been investigated. Although in some cases the EOF method gives a SZP similar to the streaming potential measurement, especially when the tracer particle exhibits the same charge as the solid surface, it was revealed that reliable results were only obtained with the streaming potential and streaming current method. Several obstacles such as elevated conductivity at higher ionic strength, the applied voltage for the EM measurement, and the nature of tracer particles lower the accuracy and reliability of the SZP determined by the EOF method. It was shown that the EOF method is not applicable to oppositely charged surface and tracer particles and also limited to low salinity conditions especially when using polymeric tracer particles. Although the EOF method does not require the formation of a capillary flow channel, it disables a non-destructive SZP of fragile or valuable samples, such as QCM-D sensors, in comparison to the SP approach. Detail comparison of two different electrokinetic phenomena EOF and SP method for the SZP determination with taking into account various materials with different surface and bulk properties.![]()

Abstract
The aim of this study is not only to investigate the feasibility of using PAH (polyallylamine hydrochloride) and PSS (poly styrene-4-sulfonic acid sodium salt) to prepare a film via a layer by layer self-assembly process entrained with silver nanoparticles, but also to show that the silver nanoparticles crystalline structure can be defined and deposited on the surface of the substrate in the desired alignment structure and manner, which is of great help to research on the LBL method in the cellulose field. The effect of outermost layer variation, assembly layers, and composition of multilayers on the formation of the LBL structure on a nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) substrate was investigated. The deposition of PAH and PSS was monitored by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The morphology of the LBL film layers was observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM). Furthermore, thermal degradation properties were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and physical properties of multilayer films were tested by a universal mechanical tester. The results reveal that PAH and PSS can be readily deposited on a NFC/PVA substrate by using LBL methodology to prepare self-assembled polyelectrolyte multilayer films. The surface morphology of the LBL composite changed from negative to positive charged depending on the final LBL treatment. Also, according to SEM and AFM analysis, silver nanoparticles were well dispersed in the (PAH/PSS) film, which significantly improved the thermal stability of the composite films.

Abstract
In the present paper, we reported how cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) from microcrystalline cellulose have the capacity to assist in the synthesis of metallic nanoparticles chains. A cationic surfactant, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), was used as modifier for CNC surface. Silver nanoparticles were synthesized on CNC, and nanoparticle density and size were optimized by varying concentrations of nitrate and reducing agents, and the reduction time. The experimental conditions were optimized for the synthesis and the resulting Ag grafted CNC (Ag-g-CNC) were characterized by means of TGA, SEM, FTIR and XRD, and then introduced in PLA matrix. PLA nanocomposite containing silver grafted cellulose nanocrystals (PLA/0.5Ag-g-1CNC) was characterized by optical and thermal analyses and the obtained data were compared with results from PLA nanocomposites containing 1% wt. of CNC (PLA/1CNC), 0.5% wt. of silver nanoparticles (PLA/0.5Ag) and hybrid system containing CNC and silver in the same amount (PLA/1CNC/0.5Ag). The results demonstrated that grafting of silver nanoparticles on CNC positively affected the thermal degradation process and cold crystallization processes of PLA matrix. Finally, the antibacterial activity of the different systems was studied at various incubation times and temperatures, showing the best performance for PLA/1CNC/0.5Ag based nanocomposite.
