Conventional and unconventional ionic phenomena in tunable soft materials made of liquid crystals and nanoparticles

A great variety of tunable multifunctional materials can be produced by combining nanoparticles and liquid crystals. Typically, the tunability of such soft nanocomposites is achieved via external electric fields resulting in the field-induced reorientation of liquid crystals. This reorientation can be altered by ions normally present in liquid crystals in small quantities. In addition, nanomaterials dispersed in liquid crystals can also affect the behavior of ions. Therefore, an understanding of ionic phenomena in liquid crystals doped with nanoparticles is essential for future advances in liquid crystal-aided nanoscience and nanotechnology. This paper provides an overview of the ionic effects observed in liquid crystals doped with nanomaterials. An introduction to liquid crystals is followed by a brief overview of nanomaterials in liquid crystals. After giving a basic description of ions in liquid crystals and experimental methods to measure them, a wide range of ionic phenomena in liquid crystals doped with different types of nanomaterials is discussed. After that, both existing and emerging applications of tunable soft materials made of liquid crystals and nanodopants are presented with an emphasis on the role of ionic effects in such systems. Finally, the discussion of unsolved problems and future research directions completes the review.

On the Analogy between Electrolytes and Ion-Generating Nanomaterials in Liquid Crystals

Nanomaterials in liquid crystals are a hot topic of contemporary liquid crystal research. An understanding of the possible effects of nanodopants on the properties of liquid crystals is critical for the development of novel mesogenic materials with improved functionalities. This paper focuses on the electrical behavior of contaminated nanoparticles in liquid crystals. More specifically, an analogy between electrolytes and ion-generating nanomaterials in liquid crystals is established. The physical consequences of this analogy are analyzed. Under comparable conditions, the number of ions generated by nanomaterials in liquid crystals can be substantially greater than the number of ions generated by electrolytes of similar concentration.

Mechanistic insight into protein supported biosorption complemented by kinetic and thermodynamics perspectives

In this review, we discussed the micro-level aspects of protein supported biosorption. The mechanism, surface chemistry in terms of energy interactions and electron transfer process (ETP) of peptide systems within protein are three important areas that provide mechanistic insight into protein supported biosorption. The functional groups in proteinous material like hydroxyl (-OH), carbonyl (>C=O), carboxyl (-COOH) and sulfhydryl (-SH) play a significant role in the biosorption of variety of pollutants such as metal ions, metalloids, and organic matters in wastewaters. The mechanistic aspects of biosorption are crucial not only for the separation process but also they contribute towards stoichiometric considerations and mathematical modelling process. The surface chemistry of applied biosorbents relies on interfacial components whose interaction energies are estimated with help of classical Derjaguin, Landau, Verwey, and Overbeek (DLVO) theory mathematically. Proteins are the fundamental molecules of many biomaterial used for the biosorption of contaminents and peptide bond is considered as the backbone of proteins. The charge variations on peptide bonding is the result of ETP whose discussion was made part of this review for understaning number of biological and technological processes of vital interests. In addition, this review was complemented by exhaustive overview of kinetic and thermodynamics perspectives of biosorption process.

Phenomenological modeling of reactive dye adsorption onto fish scales surface in the presence of electrolyte and surfactant mixtures

The aim of this work was an experimental and theoretical investigation of the influence of electrolyte (NaCl) and surfactant (SP), as textile auxiliary agents (TAAs), onto reactive blue 5G (RB5G) dye removal by applying untreated fish scales (FS) in batch system. Kinetic and equilibrium studies were performed, aiming at the comprehension of the mass transfer mechanisms through phenomenological modeling. The biosorbent was texturally characterized, to investigate the adsorbent's characteristics and to support the models' assumptions. Hence, a 'physically meaningful' modeling to assess different systems containing dye-TAA mixtures was employed. The experimental results indicated that despite the FS nonporous characteristics, it showed remarkable adsorption capacities (≈291 mg g-1), which may be ascribed to the adsorbent-adsorbate affinity and to dye-aggregates adsorption onto the FS surface. Those results evidence a potential use of FS as an alternative biosorbent material. The mathematical model was able to identify the rate-limiting step of the process; to predict the adsorption kinetics and equilibrium condition, comprising the description of aggregates formation; and to successfully predict kinetic behavior of independent data in simulated real effluent. Those results indicate that the model can be used to simulate operating conditions and, therefore, support the design, optimization, and scale-up of adsorption processes.
