Two dimensional α-MoO3 nanosheets decorated carbon cloth electrodes for high-performance supercapacitors

Well-dispersed Pt/Nb2O5on zeolitic imidazolate framework derived nitrogen-doped carbon for efficient oxygen reduction reaction

In this work, an advanced hybrid material was constructed by incorporating niobium pentoxide (Nb2O5) nanocrystals with nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) derived from ZIF-8 dodecahedrons, serving as a support, referred to as Nb2O5/NC. Pt nanocrystals were dispersed onto Nb2O5/NC using a simple impregnation reduction method. The obtained Pt/Nb2O5/NC electrocatalyst showed high oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity due to three-phase mutual contacting structure with well-dispersed Pt and Nb2O5NPs. In addition, the conductive NC benefits electron transfer, while the induced Nb2O5can regulate the electronic structure of Pt element and anchor Pt nanocrystals, thereby enhancing the ORR activity and stability. The half-wave potential (E1/2) for Pt/Nb2O5/NC is 0.886 V, which is higher than that of Pt/NC (E1/2= 0.826 V). The stability examinations demonstrated that Pt/Nb2O5/NC exhibited higher electrocatalytic durability than Pt/NC. Our work provides a new direction for synthesis and structural design of precious metal/oxides hybrid electrocatalysts.

Novel delipidated chicken feather waste-derived carbon-based molybdenum oxide nanocomposite as efficient electrocatalyst for rapid detection of hydroquinone and catechol in environmental waters

Chicken poultry industry produces a vast amount of feather waste and is often disposed into landfills, creating environmental pollution. Therefore, we explored the valorization of chicken feather waste into lipids and keratinous sludge biomass. This study demonstrates the successful utilization of keratinous sludge biomass as a unique precursor for the facile preparation of novel keratinous sludge biomass-derived carbon-based molybdenum oxide (KSC@MoO₃) nanocomposite material using two-step (hydrothermal and co-pyrolysis) processes. The surface morphology and electrochemical properties of as-prepared nanocomposite material were analyzed using HR-SEM, XRD, XPS, and cyclic voltammetric techniques. KSC@MoO₃ nanocomposite exhibited prominent electrocatalytic behavior to simultaneously determine hydroquinone (HQ) and catechol (CC) in environmental waters. The as-prepared electrochemical sensor showed excellent performance towards the detection of HQ and CC with broad concentration ranges between 0.5-176.5 μM (HQ and CC), and the detection limits achieved were 0.063 μM (HQ) and 0.059 μM (CC). Furthermore, the developed modified electrode has exhibited excellent stability and reproducibility and was also applied to analyze HQ and CC in environmental water samples. Results revealed that chicken feather waste valorization could result in sustainable biomass conversion into a high-value nanomaterial to develop a cost-effective electrochemical environmental monitoring sensor and lipids for biofuel.

Fabrication of a Novel Electrochemical Sensor Based on Carbon Cloth Matrix Functionalized with MoO3 and 2D-MoS2 Layers for Riboflavin Determination

The preparation and characterization of a hybrid composite, based on carbon cloth (CC) matrix functionalized with two-dimensional (2D) MoS2 flakes and MoO3, and its use for developing an electrochemical sensor for the determination of riboflavin (RF) is here reported. The 2D-MoS2-MoO3CC composite was prepared by depositing 2D-MoS2 nanosheets, obtained by liquid phase exfoliation (LPE), on the surface of a carbon cloth fiber network, previously functionalized with a layer of molybdenum oxide (α-MoO3) by radio-frequency magnetron reactive sputtering technique. The 2D-MoS2-MoO3CC composite was characterized by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX), and Raman spectroscopy. An electrochemical sensor has been then fabricated by fixing a slice of the 2D-MoS2-MoO3CC composite on the working electrode of a screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE). The 2D-MoS2-MoO3-CC/SPCE sensor display good electrochemical characteristics which have been exploited, for the first time, in the electroanalytical determination of riboflavin (RF). The sensitivity to RF, equal to 0.67 µA mM-1 in the linear range from 2 to 40 µM, and a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.5 µM at S/N = 3, demonstrate the promising characteristics of the proposed 2D-MoS2-MoO3-CC/SPCE electrochemical sensor for the determination of riboflavin.

Carbon-Based Quantum Dots for Supercapacitors: Recent Advances and Future Challenges

Carbon-based Quantum dots (C-QDs) are carbon-based materials that experience the quantum confinement effect, which results in superior optoelectronic properties. In recent years, C-QDs have attracted attention significantly and have shown great application potential as a high-performance supercapacitor device. C-QDs (either as a bare electrode or composite) give a new way to boost supercapacitor performances in higher specific capacitance, high energy density, and good durability. This review comprehensively summarizes the up-to-date progress in C-QD applications either in a bare condition or as a composite with other materials for supercapacitors. The current state of the three distinct C-QD families used for supercapacitors including carbon quantum dots, carbon dots, and graphene quantum dots is highlighted. Two main properties of C-QDs (structural and electrical properties) are presented and analyzed, with a focus on the contribution to supercapacitor performances. Finally, we discuss and outline the remaining major challenges and future perspectives for this growing field with the hope of stimulating further research progress.

Effects of Deposition and Annealing Temperature on the Structure and Optical Band Gap of MoS2 Films

In this study, molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) film samples were prepared at different temperatures and annealed through magnetron sputtering technology. The surface morphology, crystal structure, bonding structure, and optical properties of the samples were characterized and analyzed. The surface of the MoS₂ films prepared by radio frequency magnetron sputtering is tightly coupled and well crystallized, the density of the films decreases, and their voids and grain size increase with the increase in deposition temperature. The higher the deposition temperature is, the more stable the MoS₂ films deposited will be, and the 200 °C deposition temperature is an inflection point of the film stability. Annealing temperature affects the structure of the films, which is mainly related to sulfur and the growth mechanism of the films. Further research shows that the optical band gaps of the films deposited at different temperatures range from 0.92 eV to 1.15 eV, showing semiconductor bandgap characteristics. The optical band gap of the films deposited at 200 °C is slightly reduced after annealing in the range of 0.71–0.91 eV. After annealing, the optical band gap of the films decreases because of the two exciton peaks generated by the K point in the Brillouin zone of MoS₂. The blue shift of the K point in the Brillouin zone causes a certain change in the optical band gap of the films.

Enhanced electrochemical performance of α-MoO3/graphene nanocomposites prepared by an in situ microwave irradiation technique for energy storage applications

Nanoparticles of α-molybdenum oxide (α-MoO₃) are directly grown on graphene sheets using a surfactant-free facile one step ultrafast in situ microwave irradiation method.
