Multi-porous NiAg-doped Pd alloy nanoparticles immobilized on reduced graphene oxide/CoMoO4 composites as a highly active electrocatalyst for direct alcohol fuel cell

Facile Fabrication of Nickel Supported on Reduced Graphene Oxide Composite for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Due to the depletion of fossil fuels, the demand for renewable energy has increased, thus stimulating the development of novel materials for energy conversion devices such as fuel cells. In this work, nickel nanoparticles loaded on reduced graphene oxide (Ni/rGO) with small size and good dispersibility were successfully prepared by controlling the pyrolysis temperature of the precursor at 450 °C, assisted by a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method, and exhibited enhanced electrocatalytic activity towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Additionally, the electron enrichment on Ni NPs was due to charge transfer from the rGO support to metal nickel, as evidenced by both experimental and theoretical studies. Metal-support interactions between nickel and the rGO support also facilitated charge transfer, contributing to the enhanced ORR performance of the composite material. DFT calculations revealed that the first step (from O2 to HOO*) was the rate-determining step with an RDS energy barrier lower than that of the Pt(111), indicating favorable ORR kinetics. The HOO* intermediates can be transferred onto rGO by the solid-phase spillover effect, which reduces the chemical adsorption on the nickel surface, thereby allowing continuous regeneration of active nickel sites. The HO2- intermediates generated on the surface of rGO by 2e- reduction can also efficiently diffuse towards the nearby Ni surface or the interface of Ni/rGO, where they can be further rapidly reduced to OH-. This mechanism acts as the pseudo-four-electron path on the RRDE. Furthermore, Ni/rGO-450 demonstrated superior stability, methanol tolerance, and durability compared to a 20 wt% Pt/C catalyst, making it a cost-effective alternative to conventional noble metal ORR catalysts for fuel cells or metal-air batteries.

Stimulation of ethylene glycol electrooxidation on electrodeposited Ni–PbO2–GN nanocomposite in alkaline medium

In this work, a novel system composed of non-precious nickel-based metal oxide/reduced graphene oxide nanocomposite (Ni–PbO2–GN) is used for electrooxidation of ethylene glycol (EG) in 1.0 M NaOH solution and compares its activity with that of Ni, Ni–GN, and Ni–PbO2. The facile electrodeposition technique is used to prepare the catalysts on glassy carbon (GC) substrates. The outcomes of electrochemical measurements show a high performance towards EG oxidation is obtained for Ni-nanocomposite electrodes compared to that of Ni mainly due to their higher surface areas. The excellent electrocatalytic properties of the Ni-nanocomposite could be ascribed to the synergistic contributions of PbO2 and graphene (GN) nano-sheets that help the reduction of Ni grains. A smaller charge transfer resistance value of 34.5 Ω cm2 for EG oxidation reaction at + 360 mV is recorded for GC/Ni–PbO2–GN compared to the other prepared electrodes. Moreover, it exhibits higher kinetic parameters of EG such as diffusion coefficient (D = 3.9 × 10–10 cm2 s−1) and charge transfer rate constant (ks = 32.5 mol−1 cm3 s−1). The overall performance and stability of the prepared catalysts towards EG electrooxidation have been estimated to be in the order of GC/Ni–PbO2–GN > GC/Ni–GN > GC/Ni–PbO2 > GC/Ni.

PdPbAg alloy NPs immobilized on reduced graphene oxide/In2O3 composites as highly active electrocatalysts for direct ethylene glycol fuel cells

rGO-modified indium oxide (In₂O₃) anchored PdPbAg nanoalloy composites (PdPbAg@rGO/In₂O₃) were prepared by a facile hydrothermal, annealing and reduction method. Electrochemical tests showed that the as-prepared trimetallic catalyst exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity and high resistance to CO poisoning compared with commercial Pd/C, mono-Pd and different bimetallic catalysts. Specifically, PdPbAg@rGO/In₂O₃ has the highest forward peak current density of 213.89 mA cm⁻², which is 7.89 times that of Pd/C (27.07 mA cm⁻²). After 3600 s chronoamperometry (CA) test, the retained current density of PdPbAg@rGO/In₂O₃ reaches 78.15% of the initial value. Its excellent electrocatalytic oxidation performance is attributed to the support with large specific surface area and the strong synergistic effect of PdPbAg nanoalloys, which provide a large number of interfaces and achievable reactive sites. In addition, the introduction of rGO into the In₂O₃ matrix contributes to its excellent electron transfer and large specific surface area, which is beneficial to improving the catalytic ability of the catalyst. The study of this novel composite material provides a conceptual and applicable route for the development of advanced high electrochemical performance Pd-based electrocatalysts for direct ethylene glycol fuel cells.
