Degradation of bisphenol A by iron-carbon composites derived from spent bleaching earth

N, F Co-Doped Carbon Derived from Spent Bleaching Earth Waste as Oxygen Electrocatalyst Support

Affordable nitrogen and fluorine co-doped carbon nanostructure was prepared from the hazardous industrial waste of edible oil refinery, spent bleaching earth (SBE), and used as raw material for obtaining high-performance non-noble metal bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts. Waste SBE contains 35 % residue non-saturated oil as a carbon source and the assistance of montmorillonite (MMT) as the template. This study converts waste SBE into a fluorine-doped carbon nanostructure through a pyrolysis process followed by removing the aluminosilicate layers of the MMT by HF etching. Furthermore, the impregnation of the support with Co and Fe nitrates readily gives rise to N, F co-doped carbon (NFC) electrocatalysts, as confirmed by XPS analysis. Electrochemical results evidenced that the Co-NFC catalyst proved to be a valuable bifunctional competitor for oxygen reduction reaction and oxygen evolution reaction in alkaline media, showing activity in both reactions and superior stability compared with the Fe-NFC catalyst in accelerated tests. This work offers a straightforward, economical, and eco-friendly strategy for designing N, F co-doped carbon-based electrocatalysts for oxygen reactions in electrochemical devices.

Study on adsorption of hexavalent chromium by composite material prepared from iron-based solid wastes

A new adsorbent with chromium removal function was synthesized by carbon thermal method using iron-containing waste Fenton sludge and carbon-containing solid waste fly ash to treat high pH scoring wastewater generated from industrial processes. The results showed that the adsorbent used T = 273.15 K, pH = 10, t = 1200 min, C₀ = 100 mg/L, had a removal rate of Cr(VI) of more than 80%, and the adsorption capacity could reach 393.79 mg/g. The characterization results show that the synthesized mesoporous nitrogen-doped composite material has a large specific surface area and mesoporous structure, and the surface of the material is rich in oxygen-containing functional groups and active sites. Compared with other studies, the adsorption capacity of the material is larger, which indicates that the removal effect of Cr(VI) in this study is better. The adsorption kinetic results show that the adsorption follows a pseudo second kinetic model, and the adsorption process is a chemisorption involving electron sharing or electron exchange. This experiment designed a simple method to synthesize mesoporous nitrogen-doped composites using industrial solid waste, with raw materials from cheap and easily available industrial solid waste, and solved the dual problems of heavy metals in wastewater and solid waste, providing a new idea for the resource utilization of Fenton sludge while not producing secondary pollution.

Catalytic activity and mechanism of typical iron-based catalysts for Fenton-like oxidation

Heterogeneous Fenton-like systems were exploited for the degradation of Reactive Red X-3B (RR X-3B) using iron-carbon composite, sponge iron, chalcopyrite and pyrite as catalysts. The effect of operational variables on the catalytic activity and metal leaching behavior of catalysts was evaluated and the catalytic mechanism was discussed. The experimental results showed that under the optimum conditions, chemical oxygen demand (COD) removals by Fenton-like systems could reach 89.91%, 86.84%, 80.11% and 60.02% with iron-carbon composite, sponge iron, chalcopyrite and pyrite, respectively. Micro-electrolysis of iron-carbon composite and sponge iron resulted in higher COD removal at acid pH range. Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) analysis and quenching tests showed that ^•OH was the main reactive oxygen species responsible for the degradation of RR X-3B. A large amount of Fe²⁺ leached from iron-carbon composite and sponge iron, which served as a homogeneous Fenton catalyst during the degradation of RR X-3B. In contrast, much lower amount of Fe²⁺ was leached from chalcopyrite and pyrite, and surface catalysis of the minerals played more important role in the generation of ^•OH. Surface characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculation results illustrated that ≡Fe(II) was the primary surface catalytic site during the reaction. The reduction of ≡Fe(III) and ≡Cu(II) can be facilitated by sulfides on the mineral surface. The Fenton-like systems catalyzed by iron-based materials exhibited higher H₂O₂ utilization and COD removal than classical Fenton system. With the lower metal leaching concentration and stable surface property, chalcopyrite and pyrite may be more practical applicable from a long-term catalytic activity point of view.
