Potential Biomedical Limitations of Graphene Nanomaterials

Graphene-family nanomaterials (GFNs) possess mechanical stiffness, optical properties, and biocompatibility making them promising materials for biomedical applications. However, to realize the potential of graphene in biomedicine, it must overcome several challenges that arise when it enters the body's circulatory system. Current research focuses on the development of tumor-targeting devices using graphene, but GFNs accumulated in different tissues and cells through different pathways, which can cause toxic reactions leading to cell apoptosis and body dysfunction when the accumulated amount exceeds a certain limit. In addition, as a foreign substance, graphene can induce complex inflammatory reactions with immune cells and inflammatory factors, potentially enhancing or impairing the body's immune function. This review discusses the biomedical applications of graphene, the effects of graphene materials on human immune function, and the biotoxicity of graphene materials.

Nanofluid Formulations Based on Two-Dimensional Nanoparticles, Their Performance, and Potential Application as Water-Based Drilling Fluids

The development of sustainable, cost-efficient, and high-performance nanofluids is one of the current research topics within drilling applications. The inclusion of tailorable nanoparticles offers the possibility of formulating water-based fluids with enhanced properties, providing unprecedented opportunities in the energy, oil, gas, water, or infrastructure industries. In this work, the most recent and relevant findings related with the development of customizable nanofluids are discussed, focusing on those based on the incorporation of 2D (two-dimensional) nanoparticles and environmentally friendly precursors. The advantages and drawbacks of using 2D layered nanomaterials including but not limited to silicon nano-glass flakes, graphene, MoS₂, disk-shaped Laponite nanoparticles, layered magnesium aluminum silicate nanoparticles, and nanolayered organo-montmorillonite are presented. The current formulation approaches are listed, as well as their physicochemical characterization: rheology, viscoelastic properties, and filtration properties (fluid losses). The most influential factors affecting the drilling fluid performance, such as the pH, temperature, ionic strength interaction, and pressure, are also debated. Finally, an overview about the simulation at the microscale of fluids flux in porous media is presented, aiming to illustrate the approaches that could be taken to supplement the experimental efforts to research the performance of drilling muds. The information discussed shows that the addition of 2D nanolayered structures to drilling fluids promotes a substantial improvement in the rheological, viscoelastic, and filtration properties, additionally contributing to cuttings removal, and wellbore stability and strengthening. This also offers a unique opportunity to modulate and improve the thermal and lubrication properties of the fluids, which is highly appealing during drilling operations.

Graphene-based materials for the adsorptive removal of uranium in aqueous solutions

Ground water contamination by radioactive elements has become a critical issue that can pose significant threats to human health. Adsorption is the most promising approach for the removal of radioactive elements owing to its simplicity, effectiveness, and easy operation. Among the plethora of functional adsorbents, graphene oxide and its derivatives are recognized for their excellent potential as adsorbent with the unique 2D structure, high surface area, and intercalated functional groups. To learn more about their practical applicability, the procedures involved in their preparation and functionalization are described with the microscopic removal mechanism by GO functionalities across varying solution pH. The performance of these adsorbents is assessed further in terms of the basic performance metrics such as partition coefficient. Overall, this article is expected to provide valuable insights into the current status of graphene-based adsorbents developed for uranium removal with a guidance for the future directions in this research field.

Cyclodextrins in Polymer-Based Active Food Packaging: A Fresh Look at Nontoxic, Biodegradable, and Sustainable Technology Trends

Using cyclodextrins (CDs) in packaging technologies helps volatile or bioactive molecules improve their solubility, to guarantee the homogeneous distribution of the complexed molecules, protecting them from volatilization, oxidation, and temperature fluctuations when they are associated with polymeric matrices. This technology is also suitable for the controlled release of active substances and allows the exploration of their association with biodegradable polymer targeting to reduce the negative environmental impacts of food packaging. Here, we present a fresh look at the current status of and future prospects regarding the different strategies used to associate cyclodextrins and their derivatives with polymeric matrices to fabricate sustainable and biodegradable active food packaging (AFP). Particular attention is paid to the materials and the fabrication technologies available to date. In addition, the use of cutting-edge strategies, including the trend of nanotechnologies in active food packaging, is emphasized. Furthermore, a critical view on the risks to human health and the associated updated legislation is provided. Some of the more representative patents and commercial products that currently use AFP are also listed. Finally, the current and future research challenges which must be addressed are discussed.

Graphene Quantum Dots for Molecular Radiotherapy: Radiolabeled Graphene Quantum Dots with Radium (223Ra) Showed Potent Effect Against Bone Cancer

The necessity of new drugs with special attention for the therapy of cancer is increasing each day. Despite their properties, alpha therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals, especially based on the use of radium (²²³Ra) are good choices, due to the highest and differential cytotoxicity, low adverse effects, and higher bioaccumulation on tumor sites. The use of graphene quantum dots as the carrier for ²²³Ra is a promising approach since graphene quantum dots has low toxicity, high biocompatibility, and adequate size for tumor penetration. In this study, we developed, characterized, radiolabeled with ²²³Ra, and evaluated in vitro and in vivo graphene quantum dots radiolabeled with radium (²²³Ra) for bone cancer. The results showed that ²²³Ra is incorporated into the graphene quantum dot following the Fajans-Paneth-Hahn Law. The cell viability showed a potent effect on osteosarcoma cells (MG63 and SAOS2) but a lower effect in normal fibroblast cells (hFB), corroborating the preferential targeting. Also, the results showed a more prominent effect on MG63 than SAOS2 cells, corroborating the targeting for more undifferentiated cells. The in vivo results demonstrated a renal excretion, associated with fecal excretion and accumulation in bone. The results corroborate the efficacy of ²²³RaGQDs and open new perspectives for the use of use ²²³RaGQDs, in several other diseases.
