Abstract
A continuous stirred-tank reactor (CSTR) system is widely applied in wastewater treatment processes. Its control is a challenging industrial-process-control problem due to great difficulty to achieve accurate system identification. This work proposes a deep learning-based model predictive control (DeepMPC) to model and control the CSTR system. The proposed DeepMPC consists of a growing deep belief network (GDBN) and an optimal controller. First, GDBN can automatically determine its size with transfer learning to achieve high performance in system identification, and it serves just as a predictive model of a controlled system. The model can accurately approximate the dynamics of the controlled system with a uniformly ultimately bounded error. Second, quadratic optimization is conducted to obtain an optimal controller. This work analyzes the convergence and stability of DeepMPC. Finally, the DeepMPC is used to model and control a second-order CSTR system. In the experiments, DeepMPC shows a better performance in modeling, tracking, and antidisturbance than the other state-of-the-art methods.

Abstract
A model predictive control approach is proposed for path following of underactuated surface ships with input saturation, parameters uncertainties, and environmental disturbances. An Euler iterative algorithm is used to reduce the calculation amount of model predictive control. The matter of input saturation is addressed naturally and flexibly by taking advantage of model predictive control. The mathematical model group (MMG) model as the internal model improves the control accuracy. A radial basis function neural network is also applied to compensate the total unknowns including parameters uncertainties and environmental disturbances. The numerical simulation results show that the designed controller can force an underactuated ship to follow the desired path accurately in the case of input saturation and time-varying environmental disturbances including wind, current, and wave.

Abstract
The pharmaceutical industry has witnessed exponential growth in transforming operations towards continuous manufacturing to increase profitability, reduce waste and extend product ranges. Model predictive control (MPC) can be applied to enable this vision by providing superior regulation of critical quality attributes (CQAs). For MPC, obtaining a workable system model is of fundamental importance, especially if complex process dynamics and reaction kinetics are present. Whilst physics-based models are desirable, obtaining models that are effective and fit-for-purpose may not always be practical, and industries have often relied on data-driven approaches for system identification instead. In this work, we demonstrate the applicability of recurrent neural networks (RNNs) in MPC applications in continuous pharmaceutical manufacturing. RNNs were shown to be especially well-suited for modelling dynamical systems due to their mathematical structure, and their use in system identification has enabled satisfactory closed-loop performance for MPC of a complex reaction in a single continuous-stirred tank reactor (CSTR) for pharmaceutical manufacturing.

Abstract
Artificial pancreas system (APS) is a viable option to treat diabetic patients. Researchers, however, have not conclusively determined the best control method for APS. Due to intra-/inter-variability of insulin absorption and action, an individualized algorithm is required to control blood glucose level (BGL) for each patient. To this end, we developed model predictive control (MPC) based on artificial neural networks (ANNs), which combines ANN for BGL prediction based on inputs and MPC for BGL control based on the ANN (NN-MPC). First, we developed a mathematical model for diabetic rats, which was used to identify individual virtual subjects by fitting to empirical data collected through an APS, including BGL data, insulin injection, and food intake. Then, the virtual subjects were used to generate datasets for training ANNs. The NN-MPC determines control actions (insulin injection) based on BGL predicted by the ANN. To evaluate the NN-MPC, we conducted experiments using four virtual subjects under three different scenarios. Overall, the NN-MPC maintained BGL within the normal range about 90% of the time with a mean absolute deviation of 4.7 mg/dl from a desired BGL. Our findings suggest that the NN-MPC can provide subject-specific BGL control in conjunction with a closed-loop APS. Graphical abstract ᅟ.
