CPS-Based Self-Adaptive Collaborative Control for Smart Production-Logistics Systems

Discrete manufacturing systems are characterized by dynamics and uncertainty of operations and behavior due to exceptions in production-logistics synchronization. To deal with this problem, a self-adaptive collaborative control (SCC) mode is proposed for smart production-logistics systems to enhance the capability of intelligence, flexibility, and resilience. By leveraging cyber-physical systems (CPSs) and industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), real-time status data are collected and processed to perform decision making and optimization. Hybrid automata is used to model the dynamic behavior of physical manufacturing resources, such as machines and vehicles in shop floors. Three levels of collaborative control granularity, including nodal SCC, local SCC, and global SCC, are introduced to address different degrees of exceptions. Collaborative optimization problems are solved using analytical target cascading (ATC). A proof of concept simulation based on a Chinese aero-engine manufacturer validates the applicability and efficiency of the proposed method, showing reductions in waiting time, makespan, and energy consumption with reasonable computational time. This article potentially enables manufacturers to implement CPS and IIoT in manufacturing environments and build up smart, flexible, and resilient production-logistics systems.

A Holonic-Based Self-Learning Mechanism for Energy-Predictive Planning in Machining Processes

The present work proposes a holonic-based mechanism for self-learning factories based on a hybrid learning approach. The self-learning factory is a manufacturing system that gains predictive capability by machine self-learning, and thus automatically anticipates the performance results during the process planning phase through learning from past experience. The system mechanism, including a modeling method, architecture, and operational procedure, is structured to agentize machines and manufacturing objects under the paradigm of Holonic Manufacturing Systems. This mechanism allows machines and manufacturing objects to acquire their data and model interconnection and to perform model-driven autonomous and collaborative behaviors. The hybrid learning approach is designed to obtain predictive modeling ability in both data-existent and even data-absent environments via accommodating machine learning (which extracts knowledge from data) and transfer learning (which extracts knowledge from existing knowledge). The present work also implements a prototype system to demonstrate automatic predictive modeling and autonomous process planning for energy reduction in milling processes. The prototype generates energy-predictive models via hybrid learning and seeks the minimum energy-using machine tool through the contract net protocol combined with energy prediction. As a result, the prototype could achieve a reduction of 9.70% with respect to energy consumption as compared with the maximum energy-using machine tool.

Hierarchical network modeling with multidimensional information for aquatic safety management in the cold chain

The cold-chain information has characterized by the loss and dispersion according to the different collecting methods. The description for the quality decay factors of aquatic products can be defined as the multidimensional information. A series of nodes with multidimensional information are assembled to be hierarchies aiming at describing the environment conditions and locations in the supply chain. Each of the single hierarchy levels constitutes a sequence of node information in a network, which is applied as internal information analysis. The cross-layer information structure is defined as "bridge" information which is able to record the information transmissions among every hierarchy from the point of view of the whole chain. The study has established a novel structured modeling to describe the cold chain of aquatic products based on a network-hierarchy framework. An organized and sustainable transmission process can be built and recorded by the multidimensional attributes for the whole course of cold chain of aquatic products. In addition, seamless connections among every hierarchy are attainable by the environmental information records continuously to monitor the quality of aquatic products. The quality assessments and shelf life predictions are estimated properly as the risk control in order to monitor and trace the safety of aquatic products under the supply chain perspective.
