Robust Segmentation Based on Salient Region Detection Coupled Gaussian Mixture Model

The impressive progress on image segmentation has been witnessed recently. In this paper, an improved model introducing frequency-tuned salient region detection into Gaussian mixture model (GMM) is proposed, which is named FTGMM. Frequency-tuned salient region detection is added to achieve the saliency map of the original image, which is combined with the original image, and the value of the saliency map is added into the Gaussian mixture model in the form of spatial information weight. The proposed method (FTGMM) calculates the model parameters by the expectation maximization (EM) algorithm with low computational complexity. In the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the experiment, the subjective visual effect and the value of the evaluation index are found to be better than other methods. Therefore, the proposed method (FTGMM) is proven to have high precision and better robustness.

An Adaptive Feature Selection Algorithm for Fuzzy Clustering Image Segmentation Based on Embedded Neighbourhood Information Constraints

This paper addresses the lack of robustness of feature selection algorithms for fuzzy clustering segmentation with the Gaussian mixture model. Assuming that the neighbourhood pixels and the centre pixels obey the same distribution, a Markov method is introduced to construct the prior probability distribution and achieve the membership degree regularisation constraint for clustering sample points. Then, a noise smoothing factor is introduced to optimise the prior probability constraint. Second, a power index is constructed by combining the classification membership degree and prior probability since the Kullback–Leibler (KL) divergence of the noise smoothing factor is used to supervise the prior probability; this probability is embedded into Fuzzy Superpixels Fuzzy C-means (FSFCM) as a regular factor. This paper proposes a fuzzy clustering image segmentation algorithm based on an adaptive feature selection Gaussian mixture model with neighbourhood information constraints. To verify the segmentation performance and anti-noise robustness of the improved algorithm, the fuzzy C-means clustering algorithm Fuzzy C-means (FCM), FSFCM, Spatially Variant Finite Mixture Model (SVFMM), EGFMM, extended Gaussian mixture model (EGMM), adaptive feature selection robust fuzzy clustering segmentation algorithm (AFSFCM), fast and robust spatially constrained Gaussian mixture model (GMM) for image segmentation (FRSCGMM), and improve method are used to segment grey images containing Gaussian noise, salt-and-pepper noise, multiplicative noise and mixed noise. The peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and the error rate (MCR) are used as the theoretical basis for assessing the segmentation results. The improved algorithm indicators proposed in this paper are optimised. The improved algorithm yields increases of 0.1272–12.9803 dB, 1.5501–13.4396 dB, 1.9113–11.2613 dB and 1.0233–10.2804 dB over the other methods, and the Misclassification rate (MSR) decreases by 0.32–37.32%, 5.02–41.05%, 0.3–21.79% and 0.9–30.95% compared to that with the other algorithms. It is verified that the segmentation results of the improved algorithm have good regional consistency and strong anti-noise robustness, and they meet the needs of noisy image segmentation.

Automatic Detection of White Matter Hyperintensities in Healthy Aging and Pathology Using Magnetic Resonance Imaging: A Review

White matter hyperintensities (WMH) are commonly seen in the brain of healthy elderly subjects and patients with several neurological and vascular disorders. A truly reliable and fully automated method for quantitative assessment of WMH on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has not yet been identified. In this paper, we review and compare the large number of automated approaches proposed for segmentation of WMH in the elderly and in patients with vascular risk factors. We conclude that, in order to avoid artifacts and exclude the several sources of bias that may influence the analysis, an optimal method should comprise a careful preprocessing of the images, be based on multimodal, complementary data, take into account spatial information about the lesions and correct for false positives. All these features should not exclude computational leanness and adaptability to available data.

Automatic segmentation of corpus callosum using Gaussian mixture modeling and Fuzzy C means methods

This paper presents a comparative study of the success and performance of the Gaussian mixture modeling and Fuzzy C means methods to determine the volume and cross-sectionals areas of the corpus callosum (CC) using simulated and real MR brain images. The Gaussian mixture model (GMM) utilizes weighted sum of Gaussian distributions by applying statistical decision procedures to define image classes. In the Fuzzy C means (FCM), the image classes are represented by certain membership function according to fuzziness information expressing the distance from the cluster centers. In this study, automatic segmentation for midsagittal section of the CC was achieved from simulated and real brain images. The volume of CC was obtained using sagittal sections areas. To compare the success of the methods, segmentation accuracy, Jaccard similarity and time consuming for segmentation were calculated. The results show that the GMM method resulted by a small margin in more accurate segmentation (midsagittal section segmentation accuracy 98.3% and 97.01% for GMM and FCM); however the FCM method resulted in faster segmentation than GMM. With this study, an accurate and automatic segmentation system that allows opportunity for quantitative comparison to doctors in the planning of treatment and the diagnosis of diseases affecting the size of the CC was developed. This study can be adapted to perform segmentation on other regions of the brain, thus, it can be operated as practical use in the clinic.

Automatic segmentation of cerebral white matter hyperintensities using only 3D FLAIR images

Magnetic Resonance (MR) white matter hyperintensities have been shown to predict an increased risk of developing cognitive decline. However, their actual role in the conversion to dementia is still not fully understood. Automatic segmentation methods can help in the screening and monitoring of Mild Cognitive Impairment patients who take part in large population-based studies. Most existing segmentation approaches use multimodal MR images. However, multiple acquisitions represent a limitation in terms of both patient comfort and computational complexity of the algorithms. In this work, we propose an automatic lesion segmentation method that uses only three-dimensional fluid-attenuation inversion recovery (FLAIR) images. We use a modified context-sensitive Gaussian mixture model to determine voxel class probabilities, followed by correction of FLAIR artifacts. We evaluate the method against the manual segmentation performed by an experienced neuroradiologist and compare the results with other unimodal segmentation approaches. Finally, we apply our method to the segmentation of multiple sclerosis lesions by using a publicly available benchmark dataset. Results show a similar performance to other state-of-the-art multimodal methods, as well as to the human rater.

Spatially regularized region-based perfusion estimation in peripherals using angiographic C-arm systems

The outcome assessment of endovascular revascularization procedures in the lower limbs is currently carried out by x-ray digital subtraction angiography (DSA). Due to the two-dimensional nature of this technique, only visual assessment of arterial blood flow is possible and no tissue blood flow information (i.e. perfusion) is available to assess the effective restoration of blood supply to the tissue. In this work, we propose a method for interventional perfusion estimation in peripherals using C-arms which is based on DSA and two additional 3D images reconstructed from rotational scans. The method assumes spatial homogeneity of contrast within multiple regions identified by segmentation of the reconstructed 3D images. A dedicated segmentation method which relies on local contrast homogeneity and connectivity of anatomical structures is introduced. Region-based perfusion is obtained by mapping the 2D blood flow information from DSA to the 3D segments by solving an inverse problem. Instability of the solution due to the spatial overlap of the regions is addressed by applying spatial and temporal regularizations. The method was evaluated on data simulated from CT perfusion scans of the lower limb. Blood flow values estimated with the optimal number of segmented regions exhibited errors of 1 ± 4  and 2 ± 11 ml/100 ml min(-1) for the two analyzed cases, respectively, which showed to be sufficient to differentiate hypoperfused and normally perfused areas. The use of spatial and temporal regularization proved to be an effective way to limit inaccuracies due to instability in the solution of the inverse problem. Results in general proved the feasibility of C-arm interventional perfusion imaging by a combination of temporal information derived from DSA and spatial information derived from 3D reconstructions.

Spatial based expectation maximizing (EM)

BACKGROUND

Expectation maximizing (EM) is one of the common approaches for image segmentation.

METHODS

an improvement of the EM algorithm is proposed and its effectiveness for MRI brain image segmentation is investigated. In order to improve EM performance, the proposed algorithms incorporates neighbourhood information into the clustering process. At first, average image is obtained as neighbourhood information and then it is incorporated in clustering process. Also, as an option, user-interaction is used to improve segmentation results. Simulated and real MR volumes are used to compare the efficiency of the proposed improvement with the existing neighbourhood based extension for EM and FCM.

RESULTS

the findings show that the proposed algorithm produces higher similarity index.

CONCLUSIONS

experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in compare to other existing algorithms on various noise levels.
