Benchmarking study on time-dependent density functional theory calculations of electronic circular dichroism for gas-phase molecules

Electronic circular dichroism from real-time propagation in state space

In this paper, we propose to compute the electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra of chiral molecules using a real-time propagation of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation (TDSE) in the space of electronic field-free eigenstates, by coupling TDSE with a given treatment of the electronic structure of the target. The time-dependent induced magnetic moment is used to compute the ECD spectrum from an explicit electric perturbation. The full matrix representing the transition magnetic moment in the space of electronic states is generated from that among pairs of molecular orbitals. In the present work, we show the ECD spectra of methyloxirane, of several conformers of L-alanine, and of the Λ-Co(acac)₃ complex, computed from a singly excited ansatz of time-dependent density functional theory eigenstates. The time-domain ECD spectra properly reproduce the frequency-domain ones obtained in the linear-response regime and quantitatively agree with the available experimental data. Moreover, the time-domain approach to ECD allows us to naturally go beyond the ground-state rotationally averaged ECD spectrum, which is the standard outcome of the linear-response theory, e.g., by computing the ECD spectra from electronic excited states.

Theoretical Investigation into a Possibility of Formation of Propylene Oxide Homochirality in Space

The preferential synthesis or destruction of a single enantiomer by ultraviolet circularly polarized light (UV-CPL) has been proposed as a possible triggering mechanism for the extraterrestrial origin of homochirality. Herein, we investigate the photoabsorption property of propylene oxide (c-C₃H₆O) for UV-CPL in the Lyman-α region. Our calculations show that c-C₃H₆O was produced by CH₃⁺ and CH₃CH(OH)CH₃ or C₃H₇^• and O (triplet). The computed electronic circular dichroism spectra show that c-C₃H₆O and the intermediate (CH₃CH(OH)CH₂⁺) could absorb the UV-CPL originating from the Lyman-α emitter spectrum, suggesting that the photolysis of c-C₃H₆O or CH₃CH(OH)CH₂⁺ upon irradiation could induce chiral symmetry breakage.

Circularly polarised luminescence in an RNA-based homochiral, self-repairing, coordination polymer hydrogel

The aqueous equimolar reaction of Ag(i) ions with the thionucleoside enantiomer (-)6-thioguanosine, ((-)6tGH), yields a one-dimensional coordination polymer {Ag(-)tG} _n , the self-assembly of which generates left-handed helical chains. The resulting helicity induces an enhanced chiro-optical response compared to the parent ligand. DFT calculations indicate that this enhancement is due to delocalisation of the excited state along the helical chains, with 7 units being required to converge the calculated CD spectra. At concentrations ≥15 mmol l^-1 reactions form a sample-spanning hydrogel which shows self-repair capabilities with instantaneous recovery in which the dynamic reversibility of the coordination chains appears to play a role. The resulting gel exhibits circularly polarised luminescence (CPL) with a large dissymmetry factor of -0.07 ± 0.01 at 735 nm, a phenomenon not previously observed for this class of coordination polymer.

Chirogenesis in Zinc Porphyrins: Theoretical Evaluation of Electronic Transitions, Controlling Structural Factors and Axial Ligation

In the present work, sixteen different zinc porphyrins (possessing different meso substituents) with and without a chiral guest were modelled using DFT and TD-DFT approaches in order to understand the influence of various controlling factors on electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra. Supramolecular chirogenesis in zinc porphyrins: Complexation with enantiopure thiourea derivatives, binding studies and chirality transfer mechanism

Complexation of three (1[Formula: see text],2[Formula: see text]-2-aminocyclohexyl arylthioureas (aryl [Formula: see text] 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl; phenyl; 3,5-dimethylphenyl) as the guests to ZnTPP and ZnOEP hosts has been studied by means of UV-vis, CD spectroscopies and computational simulation. The complexation proceeds via coordination of the primary amino group to the zinc ion of the metalloporphyrin and induces a moderate circular dichroism signal in the Soret band of the porphyrins. The association constants increase with larger electron-withdrawing properties of the porphyrin host and larger electron-donating ability of the guest, indicating predominantly electrostatic (Lewis acid-base) character of the complexation. Computational study of the (1[Formula: see text],2[Formula: see text]-2-aminocyclohexyl-(3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)thiourea and ZnTPP complex revealed slight asymmetric distortion of the porphyrin plane caused by the chiral guest and additional [Formula: see text]–[Formula: see text] interactions between the host and guest molecules. The calculated CD spectrum for the same system reproduces the experimentally observed one.

Benchmarking computational methods and influence of guest conformation on chirogenesis in zinc porphyrin complexes

Different computational methods and influence of the guest conformation and solvent effect to analyze chirogenesis in zinc porphyrins by several chiral compounds have been investigated.

Induced Circular Dichroism of Jet-Cooled Phenol Complexes with (R)-(-)-2-Butanol

The induced circular dichroism (ICD) of phenol complexed with (R)-(-)-2-butanol [PhOH-(-)BOH] in a supersonic jet is investigated using resonant two-photon ionization circular dichroism (R2PICD) spectroscopy. The R2PICD spectrum of PhOH-(-)BOH exhibits nonzero ICD bands near the absorption region of bare PhOH, where (-)BOH is transparent. Two different conformers containing a single hydrogen bond between PhOH and (-)BOH are identified using ultraviolet-ultraviolet hole-burning and infrared ion-dip spectroscopy combined with quantum theoretical calculations. The ICD values of the two conformers are similar to each other. To understand these similar ICD effects of the conformers, the geometrical asymmetry of the PhOH moiety bound to (-)BOH and the coupling strength of the electric transition dipole moments between PhOH and (-)BOH are estimated. Comparing the ICD values of PhOH-(-)BOH with those of PhOH-(-)-l-methyl lactate in the previous report [ Hong , A. ; J. Phys. Chem. Lett. 2018 , 9 , 476 -480 ], we investigate the physical properties that may govern the differences of the ICD values between the two complexes.
