Abstract
The woman's body presents a number of unique anatomical features that can constitute valuable routes for the administration of drugs, either for local or systemic action. These are associated with genitalia (vaginal, endocervical, intrauterine, intrafallopian and intraovarian routes), changes occurring during pregnancy (extra-amniotic, intra-amniotic and intraplacental routes) and the female breast (breast intraductal route). While the vaginal administration of drug products is common, other routes have limited clinical application and are fairly unknown even for scientists involved in drug delivery science. Understanding the possibilities and limitations of women-specific routes is of key importance for the development of new preventative, diagnostic and therapeutic strategies that will ultimately contribute to the advancement of women's health. This article provides an overview on women-specific routes for the administration of drugs, focusing on aspects such as biological features pertaining to drug delivery, relevance in current clinical practice, available drug dosage forms/delivery systems and administration techniques, as well as recent trends in the field.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate the acceptability of the Woman's Condom (WC) over 6 months (183 days) and ≥6 menstrual cycles in a US-based multicenter open-label phase III contraceptive efficacy trial. STUDY DESIGN We assessed acceptability via written questionnaire at visit 2 (after the third cycle) and visit 3 (after the sixth cycle or >183 days, or upon early discontinuation). Key domains included ease of use, comfort/lubrication, sexual satisfaction, male partner satisfaction and confidence in pregnancy and sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevention. We analyzed quantitative data using descriptive statistics. We conducted a content analysis to identify major themes from four open-ended questions. RESULTS Most women [327/405 (81%)] had limited or no previous experience with female (internal) condoms. Of 405 evaluable women, 346 women completed questionnaires at visit 2 and 303 women at visit 3; 282 women attended both visits. Of women attending both visits, 165/282 (59%) reported at visit 2 that WC insertion was easy/very easy; this increased to 195/282 (69%) at visit 3 (p=.03). Many women [166/281 (59%)] preferred the WC [105/281 (37%)] or were neutral [61/281 (22%)], while 115/281 (41%) preferred male condoms. Women attending visit 3 felt confident that the WC could prevent pregnancy [246/303 (81%)] and STIs [217/303 (72%)]. Many women expressed empowerment with having control over their contraception; some disliked the design, esthetics and insertion process. Most women (254/299 (85%)] would recommend the WC to a friend. CONCLUSION The WC's acceptability and ease of use is promising for wider dissemination as a female-controlled method that can protect against both pregnancy and STIs. IMPLICATIONS The WC's overall acceptability and ease of use is promising for a new female-controlled barrier contraceptive option that can protect against both pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Contraception is a vital component of medical care for women with HIV or at high risk of acquiring HIV. Over the last several years, there has been emerging evidence regarding the safety and effectiveness of various contraceptive methods, ultimately leading to a revision in the WHO Medical Eligibility Criteria for contraceptive use. RECENT FINDINGS Progestogen-only injectables may be associated with an increased risk of HIV acquisition and its use has been revised to category 2 from category 1. Etonogestrel and levonorgestrel levels are lower in women who concurrently use contraceptive implant and efavirenz-based antiretroviral therapy. Multipurpose technology, aimed at providing antiretroviral medication and contraception, is an area of ongoing research but is not yet clinically available. SUMMARY It is important for providers who care for women with HIV or at high risk of HIV to inquire about pregnancy intentions. If contraception is desired, these women should be offered all available methods, with counseling regarding possible risks of contraceptive failure or HIV acquisition.

Abstract
The high rates of unplanned pregnancy reflect an unmet need for effective contraceptive methods for women, especially for individuals with health risks such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and other conditions that may contraindicate use of an estrogen-containing product. Improvements in safety, user convenience, acceptability, and availability of products remain important goals of the contraceptive development program. Another important goal is to minimize the impact of the products on the environment. Development of new methods for male contraception has the potential to address many of these issues of safety for women who have contraindications to effective contraceptive methods but want to protect against pregnancy. It would also address a huge unmet need for men who want to control their fertility. Products under development for men would not introduce ecotoxic hormones into the water system.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Multipurpose Prevention Technologies (MPTs) are designed to address two or more indications from a single product. The overall goal is to prevent unintended pregnancy and transmission of one or more STIs including HIV-1. AREAS COVERED The topics covered herein are advances in over the past three years. Advances include development of novel intravaginal rings capable of releasing microbicides to prevent transmission of HIV-1 and unintended pregnancy. These rings include the potential to prevent transmission of more than one STI and unintended pregnancy. There are also gels that can potentially accomplish the same thing. Finally, combination of a drug and barrier device are also covered. EXPERT OPINION There has been considerable advance in this field over the past three years. There is one ring currently in a Phase I clinical trial and others are soon to follow. Some of these drug delivery systems are by necessity rather complicated and hence could be prohibitively expensive in the developing world. Conducting multiple clinical trials to support regulatory approval of two or more indications represents a significant barrier. It remains unclear that women will be more motivated to use MPT products than has been observed in recent microbicide-only clinical trials. Despite these challenges, the need for MPTs remain acute hopefully ensuring they will continue to be developed over the coming years.
