On the kinetic energy release distribution for C2 evaporation from fullerene ions

Experimental evidence for the existence of an electronically excited state of the proposed dihydrogen radical cation He-H-H-He+

Survival of the weakest: The existence of a new class of centrosymmetric radical cations in which H(2) bridges two identical main group elements was recently proposed in this journal by Uggerud and co-workers. By growing complexes inside helium nanodroplets at subkelvin temperatures, we obtained experimental evidence for the existence of the most weakly bound member of this class, He-H-H-He(+) (see picture), although in a metastable, electronically excited state.In a recent report, Uggerud and co-workers (A. Krapp et al., Chem. Eur. J. 2008, 14, 4028) proposed the existence of a new class of radical cations in which a dihydrogen bridges two identical main group elements. Upon electron impact ionization of helium nanodroplets doped with one or more H(2) molecules we observe various He(x)H(y) (+) cluster ions, including He(2)H(2) (+), which would belong to the proposed class of radical cations. Mass-analyzed kinetic energy scans reveal that the ion is metastable; it dissociates in the field-free region of the mass spectrometer. One reaction is into HeH(2) (+) + He with a low kinetic energy release of 15+/-4 meV. Surprisingly, another unimolecular reaction is observed, into HeH(+) + HeH (or He + H). The probability of this reaction is an order of magnitude higher, and the average kinetic energy release is four times larger. These findings suggest the presence of a metastable electronically excited state; they are consistent with the proposed linear, centrosymmetric ion structure of He-H-H-He(+).

Experimental determination of nucleation scaling law for small charged particles

We investigated the nucleation process at the molecular level. Controlled sticking of individual atoms onto mass selected clusters over a wide mass range has been carried out for the first time. We measured the absolute unimolecular nucleation cross sections of cationic sodium clusters Na{n}{+} in the range n=25-200 at several collision energies. The widely used hard sphere approximation clearly fails for small sizes: not only should vapor-to-liquid nucleation theories be modified, but also, through the microreversibility principle, cluster decay rate statistical models.

High-resolution kinetic energy release distributions and dissociation energies for fullerene ions Cn+, 42 < or = n < or = 90

We have measured the kinetic energy released in the unimolecular dissociation of fullerene ions, Cn+ --> C(n-2)+ + C2, for sizes 42 < or = n < or = 90. A three-sector-field mass spectrometer equipped with two electric sectors has been used in order to ensure that contributions from isotopomers of different masses do not distort the experimental kinetic energy release distributions. We apply the concept of microcanonical temperature to derive from these data the dissociation energies of fullerene cations. They are converted to dissociation energies of neutral fullerenes with help of published adiabatic ionization energies. The results are compared with literature values.

Structural and electronic properties of S-doped fullerene C58: Where is the S atom situated?

Structural and electronic properties of S-doped fullerene C58 were calculated systematically via Hartree-Fock self-consistent field (SCF) and density functional B3LYP levels of theory with 6-31G(d) basis set. The most stable C58S represents an open cage structure with a nine-member ring orifice, which provides a large hole for large atoms or small molecules to pass through into the cage. The most stable endohedral S@C58 has the S atom seated near the center of the C58 cage. The calculated highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy gaps of the isomers lie in the range of 1.42-2.50 eV. The electron affinity and the ionization potential were also presented as an indicator of the kinetic stability. Our results may aid in the design of experimental methods for controlling the nature of fullerene cages (for example, doping, opening, and reclosing them).
