Simulation of explicit internal signal stochastic resonance in a qualitative model for intercellular calcium ion oscillations

Enhanced corticomuscular coherence by external stochastic noise

Noise can have beneficial effects as shown by the stochastic resonance (SR) phenomenon which is characterized by performance improvement when an optimal noise is added. Modern attempts to improve human performance utilize this phenomenon. The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether performance improvement by addition of optimum noise (ON) is related to increased cortical motor spectral power (SP) and increased corticomuscular coherence. Eight subjects performed a visuomotor task requiring to compensate with the right index finger a static force (SF) generated by a manipulandum on which Gaussian noise was applied. The finger position was displayed on-line on a monitor as a small white dot which the subjects had to maintain in the center of a green bigger circle. Electroencephalogram from the contralateral motor area, electromyogram from active muscles and finger position were recorded. The performance was measured by the mean absolute deviation (MAD) of the white dot from the zero position. ON compared to the zero noise condition induced an improvement in motor accuracy together with an enhancement of cortical motor SP and corticomuscular coherence in beta-range. These data suggest that the improved sensorimotor performance via SR is consistent with an increase in the cortical motor SP and in the corticomuscular coherence.

Selective effects of external noise on Ca2+ signal in mesoscopic scale biochemical cell systems

We have investigated how the external noise would influence the intracellular calcium signaling processes due to the existence of internal noise in small systems. Using chemical Langevin equations, we demonstrate numerically that the behavior of 'system size bi-resonance' induced by internal noise will change with the external noise intensity in different regions, indicating the occurrence of selective effects of external noise. Meanwhile, cell system may also automatically select an optimal cell size to obtain the best performance in the presence of external noise. These results may imply that such selective-effect phenomenon should have some inherent relevance with the distinct deterministic bifurcation features of the system.

Signal transduction in a coupled hormone system: selective explicit internal signal stochastic resonance and its control

Cooperative interactions of signal transduction and environmental noise are investigated with a coupled hormone system, in which selective explicit internal signal stochastic resonance (EISSR) is observed. More specifically, the large peak of a period-2 oscillation (i.e., a strong signal) is greatly amplified by the environmental noise while the small peak (i.e., a weak signal) does not exhibit cooperative interactions with noise. The EISSR phenomenon could be controlled by adjusting the frequency or amplitude of an external signal and a critical amplitude for external signal is found. Significantly, the maximal signal-to-noise ratio increases almost linearly with the increment of control parameter, despite that the magnitude of the large peak is decreased. In addition, the noise does not alter the fundamental frequencies of the strong signal and the weak signal, which implicates that the system can keep its intrinsic oscillatory state and resist the effect of environmental fluctuations.
