Abstract
From the reaction of ceftriaxone 1 antibiotic with 2,6-diaminopyridine 2 a ceftriaxone-based Schiff base (H2L,3) was obtained and its transition metal complexes were synthesized. Spectroscopic and physicochemical techniques, namely, UV-visible, FT-IR, 1H NMR, EPR, mass spectrometry, molar conductance, magnetic susceptibility and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, together with elemental and thermal analyses, were used to find out the binding mode and composition of these complexes. The ceftriaxone-based Schiff base 3 behaves as a monoanionic tridentate N,N,O ligand. Spectral and magnetic data suggest an octahedral geometry for all complexes and the general formulae [M(HL)(OAc)(H2O)2] (M(II) = Mn2+4, Co2+5, Ni2+6, Cu2+7, Zn2+8), are proposed for them. All compounds were screened for antibacterial activity using both the agar disc diffusion method and the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC). It was found that complex 8 exhibited the most promising bactericidal activity against S. aureus (MIC = 0.0048 μmol/ml) and E. coli (MIC = 0.0024 μmol/ml). It is more active than the free ligand 1 (MIC = 0.0560 μmol/ml for S. aureus and 0.0140 μmol/ml for E. coli). These MIC results were compared with those obtained using similar zinc(II) Schiff base complexes, and with the values obtained using ceftriaxone conjugated with silver and gold nanoparticles (NPs), using earlier published data. Synthesized metal complexes exhibited LC50 values >1000 ppm indicating their nontoxicity against brine shrimp nauplii (Artemia Salina).

Abstract
In this study, an accurate analytical method development for cobalt determination in urine samples was described. The method is based on the mass transfer of the target analytes to the organic phase from the aqueous phase by the dispersing extractant throughout the solution with the aid of CO2 bubbles prior to sample measurement by using a slotted quartz tube flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer. An extractor (1-decanol) dropped effervescent tablet (anhydrous sodium carbonate and sodium dihydrogen phosphate dihydrate mixture) was used in order to separate/preconcentrate cobalt after complexation of cobalt ions in aqueous solution with the Schiff base ligand. The parameters affecting the extraction output such as complexing conditions (pH, ligand concentration, and volume) and extraction conditions (extraction solvent type and volume, extraction temperature, and heating duration, NaOH volume and mixing period) were optimized to lower the detection limit. The limit of detection and quantification values under optimized experimental and instrumental conditions were determined as 3.7 μg L-1 and 12 μg L-1, respectively with high linearity with respect to the dynamic range between 15 and 300 μg L-1. The enhancement factor obtained with the developed method was calculated as 83 fold. The pretreatment process was applied to urine samples in order to test the convenience of the developed method in urine samples for the determination of cobalt at low levels. The high percentage recovery results of 96-97% for four different concentrations of spiked urine samples indicated the proposed method's sufficient sensitivity for analyte determination in such a complex matrix.

Abstract
A titanium-doped sapphire regenerative dual-amplifier array operating at multi-kHz repetition rates has been developed for synchrotron radiation ultra-fast x-ray applications. The thermal lensing of the crystal in the amplifiers is virtually eliminated by cryogenic cooling of the laser crystal. The output energy of the amplifiers is measured to be greater than 2.6 mJ and the pulse length was compressed to less than 70 fs. The output laser mode is a near perfect Gaussian TEM00 with an M(2) factor of 1.02. The performance of the amplifier system is in excellent agreement with theoretical calculation.

Abstract
In this paper, electronic structures and third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of a series of Pt–Pt bond-containing metal complexes have been calculated by using the density functional theory (DFT) combining with the sum-over-states (SOS) method. In order to check the reliability of this method, the electron correlations and basis sets have been compared. Our calculated results show that introduction of electron donor, thiophene ring and lengthing of organic conjugated ligand can enhance third-order NLO responses. The electronic structure analysis shows that the [Pt–Pt(H2P(CH2)PH2)2] fragment displays strong electron-withdrawing character in these systems. Meanwhile, the third-order NLO response of Pt–Pt bond also has been estimated by using TDDFT–SOS method. An enhancement of third-order NLO response has been observed because of the introduction of the Pt–Pt bond. This is mainly due to the intense and low-lying metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) and intraligand (IL) CT transitions.

Abstract
The redox-switchable second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of a series of Rh(I) complexes have been studied based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The analysis of the electronic structure shows that the Rh(I) ion acts as the oxidation center in a one-electron-oxidized process, while both the Rh(I) ion and the 9,10-phenanthrenediimine (phdi) ligand act as reduction centers in a one-electron-reduced process. Different redox centers lead to different charge-transfer (CT) features, which alter the static first hyperpolarizabilities of the neutral complexes. Our DFT calculations indicated that these complexes show large second-order NLO responses and that the redox process can significantly enhance these NLO responses. For complexes 2 and 3, the β(tot) values of the one-electron-reduced species 2(-) and the one-electron-oxidized species 3(+) are ~10.0 and ~8.5 times larger, respectively, than those of the corresponding neutral complexes. Therefore, complexes 2 and 3 are promising candidates for redox-switchable NLO molecular materials. The large NLO responses of the oxidized species are mainly related to ligand-to-ligand charge-transfer (LLCT) transitions when combined with intraligand charge-transfer (ILCT) transitions, while the results for the reduced species are strongly associated with metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) transitions.

Abstract
A series of asymmetric donor-acceptor substituted salen-type Schiff-bases have been synthesized and their structures, electronic properties and second order nonlinearities were investigated by DFT methods. In order to verify the stable of these Schiff-base derivates, the IR spectrum of these Schiff-base derivates were calculated, the result showed that these compounds are stable. The results of TD-DFT calculation indicate that the derivatives with the electron-donating group (CH3, OCH3 or N(C2H5)2) have a red shift absorption compared to derivatives with the electron-withdrawing group (NO2). The analysis of MOS indicates that the CN group has contribution to the LUMO orbital while the groups of OCH3, N(C2H5)2 and NO2 have contribution to the HOMO orbital. OCH3, N(C2H5)2 as electron rich groups, made the derivates have a larger first static hyperpolarizability. However, the compound (II) with a NO2 substituent, also has a large first static hyperpolarizability. This is probably because of the special transition model, namely the values of two oscillator strength f (fHOMO-1-LUMO=0.405, fHOMO-LUMO=0.321) are almost equal. In order to understand the influence of the energy gap (ΔE) between the HOMO and the LUMO orbitals on the first static hyperpolarizability, we calculated the energy gap (ΔE) of all Schiff-base compounds. The results show that the smaller the HOMO-LUMO energy gap is, the larger the first static hyperpolarizability is.

Abstract
Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were carried out to investigate the nonlinear optical (NLO) response for the donor-conjugated bridge-accepter (D–π–A) model of p-nitroaniline (PNA) – hexamolybdate derivatives and PNA–metal–carbonyl complexes. The bond length alternation (BLA) values decrease with lengthening of the π-conjugated bridge, especially for PNA–hexamolybdate derivatives, which dramatically enhances the NLO response. In addition, the introduction of Mo≡N in PNA–hexamolybdate derivatives is expected to provide a better electron transition channel, consequently generating lower BLA values and an outstanding NLO response compared with PNA–metal–carbonyl complexes. It is shown that the hexamolybdate acts as an electron donor when incorporating metal–carbonyl complexes into one molecule. All these behaviors reflect the superiority of hexamolybdate as a donor moiety in the D–π–A model for the design of potential NLO materials.
