Temperature measurements of the PEDOT-PSS layer in a polymer light-emitting diode by stokes and anti-stokes Raman scattering

Extended Intermolecular Interactions Governing Photocurrent-Voltage Relations in Ternary Organic Solar Cells

Efficient organic solar cells are based on (electron) donor-acceptor heterojunctions. An optically generated excited molecular state (exciton) is dissociated at this junction, forming a charge-transfer (CT) state in an intermediate step before the electron and hole are completely separated. The observed highly efficient dissociation of this Coulombically bound state raises the question on the dissociation mechanism. Here, we show that the observed high quantum yields of charge carrier generation and CT state dissociation are due to extended (and consequently weakly bound) CT states visible in absorption and emission spectra and first-principles calculations. Identifying a new geminate-pair loss mechanism via donor excimers, we find that the hole on the small-molecule donor is not localized on a single molecule and charge separation is correlated with the energetic offset between excimer and CT states. Thus, the charges upon interface charge transfer and even in the case of back-transfer and recombination are less localized than commonly assumed.

Raman Spectroscopic Study on Phosphorous-Doped Silicon Nanoparticles

The Raman spectra of films prepared from 8, 19, and 30 nm nanoparticles of silicon doped with phosphorous were measured with excitation at 514.5 nm. The observed spectra were analyzed by decomposing the observed Raman bands into three symmetric Voigt function bands, which were assigned to the Si-Si stretching modes of crystalline, boundary, and amorphous-like components. The fractions of crystalline, boundary, and amorphous-like regions were estimated from the obtained components. The obtained fractions can be explained as a sphere-like nanoparticle consisting of a crystalline core surrounded with boundary and amorphous-like shells, which is consistent with the transmission electron microscope images showing a sphere-like shape. The observed spectral shape of the 8 nm nanoparticle film showed significant changes upon light irradiation with a power density of 5.5 kW cm(-2), i.e., the amorphous-like region converted to a crystalline one. The temperature of the film under laser irradiation was estimated to be lower than 1041 °C from the anti-Stokes to the Stokes Raman bands due to the Si-Si stretching mode. The observed partial crystallization is probably induced by heating associated with light irradiation.

Quantitative tradeoffs between spatial, temporal, and thermometric resolution of nonresonant Raman thermometry for dynamic experiments

The ratio of Stokes to anti-Stokes nonresonant spontaneous Raman can provide an in situ thermometer that is noncontact, independent of any material specific parameters or calibrations, can be multiplexed spatially with line imaging, and can be time resolved for dynamic measurements. However, spontaneous Raman cross sections are very small, and thermometric measurements are often limited by the amount of laser energy that can be applied without damaging the sample or changing its temperature appreciably. In this paper, we quantitatively detail the tradeoff space between spatial, temporal, and thermometric accuracy measurable with spontaneous Raman. Theoretical estimates are pinned to experimental measurements to form realistic expectations of the resolution tradeoffs appropriate to various experiments. We consider the effects of signal to noise, collection efficiency, laser heating, pulsed laser ablation, and blackbody emission as limiting factors, provide formulae to help choose optimal conditions and provide estimates relevant to planning experiments along with concrete examples for single-shot measurements.
