Synthesis, characterization of a new photosensitive compound [Ru(bpy)2 (TPAD)](PF6)2 and its application for photocatalytic hydrogen production

Insights into enantioselective separations of ionic metal complexes by sub/supercritical fluid chromatography

Sub/supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) is a green separation technique that has been used to separate a wide variety of compounds and is proven to be immensely useful for chiral separations. However, SFC is currently not thought to be applicable for ionic compounds due to their low solubility in CO2, even with additives and organic modifiers. Recently, a large amount of research has been centered on octahedral complexes of Ru(II) and Os(II) with bidentate polypyridyl ligands due to their ability to serve in cancer treatment and other biological activities. These compounds exist as the delta (Δ) and lambda (Λ) enantiomers. Previously, similar compounds have been enantiomerically separated using HPLC and capillary electrophoresis, but never with SFC. Cyclofructan-6 (CF6) derivatized with (R)-naphthyl ethyl (RN) groups has been proven to be an effective chiral stationary phase for these separations in HPLC. This column chemistry was expanded to SFC to provide the first chiral separation of a wide variety (23 complexes in total) of ionic octahedral polypyridyl complexes. Unexpected behavior for mixing methanol and acetonitrile as the organic modifier will be discussed, along with the effects of additives. Enantioselectivity on CF6-RN chemistry is shown to be dependent on the conjugation level and rigidity of the metal complexes. Mass transfer kinetic behavior is also shown, and high-efficiency baseline resolved rapid separations are shown for fast screening or quantitation of representative coordination complexes.

Rational design of type I photosensitizers based on Ru(ii) complexes for effective photodynamic therapy under hypoxia

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been widely used in conjunction with molecular oxygen to cause cancer cell death. Hypoxia, the inherent property in solid tumors, is the obstacle during the process of PDT. It is urgent to develop PDT photosensitizers independent of the oxygen concentration. Herein, triphenylamine-modified Ru(ii) complexes have been used as photosensitizers to produce superoxide anions (O2-˙) and hydroxyl radicals (˙OH) through a type I photochemical process. Ru(ii) complexes with triphenylamine can provide a possibility to drive the reactive oxygen species production through low oxidation potential and good light-harvesting abilities. The investigation on light-mediated radical production showed that Ru4 could produce abundant ˙OH and O2-˙ compared to Ru1-Ru3 under hypoxic environments owing to the strong absorption. These radicals exhibit potent toxicity, which can damage the neighbouring biomolecules and cause the apoptosis of cancer cells. The PDT effect was evaluated in vitro under hypoxia, suggesting that Ru4 could maintain excellent performance in inducing a sharp decrease in the activity of cancer cells.

Visual Detection of Triethylamine and a Dual Input/Output Logic Gate Based on a Eu3+-Complex

A series of Ln³⁺-metal centered complexes, Ln(TTA)₃(DPPI) (Ln = La, 1; Ln = Eu, 2; Ln = Tb, 3; or Ln = Gd, 4) [(DPPI = N-(4-(1H-imidazo [4,5-f][1,10]phenanthrolin-2-yl)phenyl)-N-phenylbenzenamine) and (TTA = 2-Thenoyltrifluoroacetone)] have been synthesized and characterized. Among which, the Eu³⁺-complex shows efficient purity red luminescence in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) solution, with a Commission International De L’ Eclairage (CIE) coordinate at x = 0.638, y = 0.323 and Φ_Eu^L = 38.9%. Interestingly, increasing the amounts of triethylamine (TEA) in the solution regulates the energy transfer between the ligand and the Eu³⁺-metal center, which further leads to the luminescence color changing from red to white, and then bluish-green depending on the different excitation wavelengths. Based on this, we have designed the IMPLICATION logic gate for TEA recognition by applying the amounts of TEA and the excitation wavelengths as the dual input signal, which makes this Eu³⁺-complex a promising candidate for TEA-sensing optical sensors.

Mitochondrial targeted rhodium(III) complexes: Synthesis, characterized and antitumor mechanism investigation

Recently, rhodium complexes have received intensive attentions due to their tunable chemical and biological properties as well as attractive antitumor activity. In this work, two imidazole triphenylamino rhodium complexes [Rh(ppy)₂L1]PF6 (Rh1) and [Rh(ppy)₂L2]PF6 (Rh2) (ppy = 2-phenylpyridine, L1 = 4-(1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthrolin-2-yl)-N,N-diphenylaniline, L2 = N-(4-(1H-imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthrolin-2-yl)phenyl)-4-methyl-N-(p-tolyl)aniline) have been synthesized and characterized. Both complexes display stronger anticancer activity against a various of cancer cells than cisplatin and they can effectively localize to mitochondria. Further mechanism studies show that Rh1 induce caspase-dependent apoptosis through mitochondrial damage, down-regulate the expression of B-cell lymphoma-2 (Bcl-2)/Bcl2-associated x (Bax) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) elevation. Our work provides a strategy for the construction of highly effective anticancer agents targeting mitochondrial metabolism through rational modification of rhodium complexes.

Making Use of the δ Electrons in K4Mo2(SO4)4 for Visible-Light-Induced Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production

Quadruply bonded dimolybdenum complexes with a σ²π⁴δ² electronic configuration for the ground state have rich metal-centered photochemistry. An earlier study showed that stoichiometric or less amount of molecular hydrogen was produced upon irradiation by ultraviolet light (λ = 254 nm) of K₄Mo₂(SO₄)₄ in sulfuric acid solution, which was attributed to the reductive capability of the ππ* excited state. To make use of the δ electrons for visible-light-induced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution, a multicomponent heterogeneous photocatalytic system containing K₄Mo₂(SO₄)₄ photosensitizer, TiO₂ electron relay, and MoS₂ cocatalyst is designed and tested. With ascorbic acid added as a sacrificial reagent, irradiation by artificial sunlight (AM 1.5) on the reaction in 5 M H₂SO₄ has produced 13 400 μmol g^-1 of molecular hydrogen (based on the Mo₂ complex), which is 30 times higher than the hydrogen yield obtained from the reaction of bare K₄Mo₂(SO₄)₄ with H₂SO₄ under ultraviolet light irradiation. Further improvement of hydrogen evolution is achieved by addition of oxalic acid, along with an electron donor, which gives an additional 50% increase in H₂ yield. Spectroscopic analyses indicate that, in this case, a junction between the Mo₂ complex and TiO₂ is built by the oxalate bridging ligand, which facilitates charge injection and separation from the Mo₂ core. This Mo₂-TiO₂-MoS₂ system has achieved a high hydrogen evolution rate up to 4570 μmol g^-1 h^-1. The efficiency of K₄Mo₂(SO₄)₄ as a metal-centered photosensitizer is also proved by parallel experiments with a dye chromophore, fluorescein, which presents comparable H₂ yields and hydrogen evolution rates. Most importantly, in this study, detailed analyses illustrate that the photocatalytic cycle with hydrogen gas as an outcome of the reaction is established by involvement of the δδ* excited state generated by visible light irradiation. Therefore, this work shows the potential of quadruply bonded Mo₂ complexes as photosensitizers for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

Unraveling the Mechanisms of Visible Light Photocatalytic NO Purification on Earth-Abundant Insulator-Based Core-Shell Heterojunctions

Earth-abundant insulators are seldom exploited as photocatalysts. In this work, we constructed a novel family of insulator-based heterojunctions and demonstrated their promising applications in photocatalytic NO purification, even under visible light irradiation. The heterojunction formed between the insulator SrCO₃ and the photosensitizer BiOI, via a special SrCO₃-BiOI core-shell structure, exhibits an enhanced visible light absorbance between 400-600 nm, and an unprecedentedly high photocatalytic NO removal performance. Further density functional theory (DFT) calculations and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis revealed that the covalent interaction between the O 2p orbital of the insulator (SrCO₃, n-type) and the Bi 6p orbital of photosensitizer (BiOI, p-type) can provide an electron transfer channel between SrCO₃ and BiOI, allowing the transfer of the photoexcited electrons from the photosensitizer to the conduction band of insulator (confirmed by charge difference distribution analysis and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy). The •O₂^- and •OH radicals are the main reactive species in photocatalytic NO oxidation. A reaction pathway study based on both in situ FT-IR and molecular-level simulation of NO adsorption and transformation indicates that this heterojunction can efficiently transform NO to harmless nitrate products via the NO → NO⁺ and NO₂⁺ → nitrate or nitrite routes. This work provides numerous opportunities to explore earth-abundant insulators as visible-light-driven photocatalysts, and also offers a new mechanistic understanding of the role of gas-phase photocatalysis in controlling air pollution.
