Synthesis and electrochemical performances of ternary nanocomposite SnO2@MoO3@graphene as high-performance anode material for lithium-ion batteries

A Brief Review of MoO3 and MoO3-Based Materials and Recent Technological Applications in Gas Sensors, Lithium-Ion Batteries, Adsorption, and Photocatalysis

Molybdenum trioxide is an abundant natural, low-cost, and environmentally friendly material that has gained considerable attention from many researchers in a variety of high-impact applications. It is an attractive inorganic oxide that has been widely studied because of its layered structure, which results in intercalation ability through tetrahedral/octahedral holes and extension channels and leads to superior charge transfer. Shape-related properties such as high specific capacities, the presence of exposed active sites on the oxygen-rich structure, and its natural tendency to oxygen vacancy that leads to a high ionic conductivity are also attractive to technological applications. Due to its chemistry with multiple valence states, high thermal and chemical stability, high reduction potential, and electrochemical activity, many studies have focused on the development of molybdenum oxide-based systems in the last few years. Thus, this article aims to briefly review the latest advances in technological applications of MoO3 and MoO3-based materials in gas sensors, lithium-ion batteries, and water pollution treatment using adsorption and photocatalysis techniques, presenting the most relevant and new information on heterostructures, metal doping, and non-stoichiometric MoO3-x.

Molten Salt-Assisted Catalytic Preparation of MoS2/α-MoO3/Graphene as High-Performance Anode of Li-Ion Battery

We report on the facile and scalable catalytic conversion of natural graphite and MoS2 minerals into α-MoO3 nanoribbons incorporated into hexagonal MoS2 and graphene nanosheets, and evaluate the structural, morphological and electrochemical performances of the hybrid nanostructured material obtained. Mechanochemical treatment of raw materials, followed by catalytic molten salt treatment leads to the formation of nanostructures with promising electrochemical performances. We examined the effect of processing temperature on the electrochemical performance of the products. At 1100 °C, an excellent Li-ion storage capacity of 773.5 mAh g−1 is obtained after 180 cycles, considerably greater than that of MoS2 (176.8 mAh g−1). The enhanced capacity and the rate performance of this electrode are attributed to the well-integrated components, characterized by the formation of interfacial molybdenum oxycarbide layer during the synthesis process, contributing to the reduced electrical/electrochemical resistance of the sample. This unique morphology promotes the charge and ions transfer through the reduction of the Li-ion diffusion coefficient (1.2 × 10−18 cm2 s−1), enhancing the pseudocapacitive performance of the electrode; 59.3% at the scan rate of 0.5 mV s−1. This article provides a green and low-cost route to convert highly available natural graphite and MoS2 minerals into nanostructured hybrid materials with promising Li-ion storage performance.

Concentration Gradient Induced Delithiation Failure of MoO3 for Li-Ion Batteries

Electric vehicle manufacturers worldwide are demanding superior lithium-ion batteries, with high energy and power densities, compared to gasoline engines. Although conversion-type metal oxides are promising candidates for high-capacity anodes, low initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) and poor capacity retention have hindered research on their applications. In this study, the ICE of conversion-type MoO₃ is investigated, with a particular focus on the delithiation failure. A computational modeling predicts the concentration gradient of Li⁺ in MoO₃ particles. The highly delithiated outer region of the particle forms a layer with low electronic conductivity, which impedes further delithiation. A comparative study using various sizes of MoO₃ particles demonstrated that the electrode failure during delithiation is governed by the concentration gradient and the subsequent formation of a resistive shell. The proposed failure mechanism provides critical guidance for the development of conversion-type anode materials with improved electrochemical reversibility.
