Abstract
Simultaneous multi-slice (SMS) is a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) acceleration technique that utilizes multi-band radio-frequency pulses to simultaneously excite and encode multiple slices. Currently, SMS has been widely studied and applied in the MRI examination to reduce acquisition time, which can significantly improve the examination efficiency and patient throughput. Moreover, SMS technique can improve spatial resolution, which is of great value in disease diagnosis, treatment response monitoring, and prognosis prediction. This review will briefly introduce the technical principles of SMS, and summarize its current clinical applications. More importantly, we will discuss the recent technical progress and future research direction of SMS, hoping to highlight the clinical value and scientific potential of this technique.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Simultaneous multi-slice diffusion-weighted imaging (SMS-DWI) can shorten acquisition time in abdominal imaging. PURPOSE To investigate the agreement and reproducibility of apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) from abdominal SMS-DWI acquired with different vendors and different breathing schemes. STUDY TYPE Prospective. SUBJECTS Twenty volunteers and 10 patients. FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE 3.0 T, SMS-DWI with a diffusion-weighted echo-planar imaging sequence. ASSESSMENT SMS-DWI was acquired using breath-hold and free-breathing techniques in scanners from two vendors, yielding four scans in each participant. Average ADC values were measured in the liver, pancreas, spleen, and both kidneys. Non-normalized ADC and ADCs normalized to the spleen were compared between vendors and breathing schemes. STATISTICAL TESTS Paired t-test or Wilcoxon signed rank test; intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC); Bland-Altman method; coefficient of variation (CV) analysis; significance level: P < 0.05. RESULTS Non-normalized ADCs from the four SMS-DWI scans did not differ significantly in the spleen (P = 0.262, 0.330, 0.166, 0.122), right kidney (P = 0.167, 0.538, 0.957, 0.086), and left kidney (P = 0.182, 0.281, 0.504, 0.405), but there were significant differences in the liver and pancreas. For normalized ADCs, there were no significant differences in the liver (P = 0.315, 0.915, 0.198, 0.799), spleen (P = 0.815, 0.689, 0.347, 0.423), pancreas (P = 0.165, 0.336, 0.304, 0.584), right kidney (P = 0.165, 0.336, 0.304, 0.584), and left kidney (P = 0.496, 0.304, 0.443, 0.371). Inter-reader agreements of non-normalized ADCs were good to excellent (ICCs ranged from 0.861 to 0.983), and agreement and reproducibility were good to excellent depending on anatomic location (CVs ranged from 3.55% to 13.98%). Overall CVs for abdominal ADCs from the four scans were 6.25%, 7.62%, 7.08, and 7.60%. DATA CONCLUSION The normalized ADCs from abdominal SMS-DWI may be comparable between different vendors and breathing schemes, showing good agreement and reproducibility. ADC changes above approximately 8% may potentially be considered as a reliable quantitative biomarker to assess disease or treatment-related changes. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE 2 TECHNICAL EFFICACY: Stage 2.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) with simultaneous multi-slice (SMS) acquisition and advanced processing can accelerate acquisition time and improve MR image quality. This study evaluated the image quality and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) measurements of free-breathing DWI acquired from patients with liver metastases using a prototype SMS-DWI acquisition (with/without an advanced processing option) and conventional DWI. METHODS Four DWI schemes were compared in a pilot 5-patient cohort; three DWI schemes were further assessed in a 24-patient cohort. Two readers scored image quality of all b-value images and ADC maps across the three methods. ADC measurements were performed, for all three methods, in left and right liver parenchyma, spleen, and liver metastases. The Friedman non-parametric test (post-hoc Wilcoxon test with Bonferroni correction) was used to compare image quality scoring; t-test was used for ADC comparisons. RESULTS SMS-DWI was faster (by 24%) than conventional DWI. Both readers scored the SMS-DWI with advanced processing as having the best image quality for highest b-value images (b750) and ADC maps; Cohen's kappa inter-reader agreement was 0.6 for b750 image and 0.56 for ADC maps. The prototype SMS-DWI sequence with advanced processing allowed a better visualization of the left lobe of the liver. ADC measured in liver parenchyma, spleen, and liver metastases using the SMS-DWI with advanced processing option showed lower values than those derived from the SMS-DWI method alone (t-test, p < 0.0001; p < 0.0001; p = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS Free-breathing SMS-DWI with advanced processing was faster and demonstrated better image quality versus a conventional DWI protocol in liver patients. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT Free-breathing simultaneous multi-slice- diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) with advanced processing was faster and demonstrated better image quality versus a conventional DWI protocol in liver patients. Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate whether simultaneous multi-slice (SMS) acceleration and gadoxetic acid administration affect the quantitative apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) measurement of DWI in patients with HCC. METHODS This prospective study initially enrolled 208 patients with clinically suspected HCC. Free breathing SMS-DWI and conventional DWI (CON-DWI) were performed before and after gadoxetic acid administration. Lesion conspicuity, ADCs and SNRs of the HCC lesion and normal liver parenchyma were independently measured by two radiologists. The paired t test or Wilcoxon signed rank test was used to evaluate the differences of lesion conspicuity, ADCs and SNRs between SMS-DWI and CON-DWI, as well as those before and after gadoxetic acid administration. RESULTS A total of 102 HCC patients (90 men and 12 women; mean age, 54.6 ± 11.7 years) were finally included for analysis. SMS-DWI and CON-DWI demonstrated comparable lesion conspicuity (P = 0.081-0.566). For the influence of SMS acceleration, the SNRs of liver parenchyma on enhanced SMS-DWI were significantly higher than enhanced CON-DWI (P = 0.015). For the influence of gadoxetic acid administration, the mean ADCs were significantly higher on enhanced SMS-DWI than unenhanced SMS-DWI (HCC, P = 0.013; liver parenchyma, P = 0.032). CONCLUSION Quantitative ADC measurements of HCC and liver parenchyma were not affected by SMS acceleration, and SMS-DWI can provide higher SNR than CON-DWI. However, the ADC measurements can be affected by gadoxetic acid administration on SMS-DWI, so it is recommended to perform SMS-DWI before gadoxetic acid administration.

Abstract
Diffusion-weighted images of the prostate can suffer from a "hazy" background in low signal-intensity areas. We hypothesize that enhanced image processing (EIP) using complex averaging reduces artifacts, noise, and distortion in conventionally acquired diffusion-weighted images and synthesized high b-value images, thus leading to higher image quality and better detection of potentially malignant lesions. Conventional DWI trace images with a b-value of 1000 s/mm2 (b1000), calculated images with a b-value of 2000 s/mm2 (cb2000), and ADC maps of 3T multiparametric prostate MRIs in 53 patients (age 68.8 ± 10 years) were retrospectively evaluated. Standard images were compared to images using EIP. In the standard images, 36 lesions were detected in the peripheral zone and 20 in the transition zone. In 13 patients, EIP led to the detection of 8 additional lesions and the upgrading of 6 lesions; 6 of these patients were diagnosed with prostate carcinoma Gleason 7 or 8. EIP improved qualitative ratings for overall image quality and lesion detectability. Artifacts were significantly reduced in the cb2000 images. Quantitative measurements for lesion detectability expressed as an SI ratio were significantly improved. EIP using complex averaging led to image quality improvements in acquired and synthesized DWI, potentially resulting in elevated diagnostic accuracy and management changes.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the feasibility of high-resolution readout-segmented echo-planar imaging (rs-EPI) with simultaneous multislice (SMS) imaging to predict well-differentiated rectal cancer.Kindly check and confirm whether the Author Name 'Hongyun Huang ' is correctly identified.confirm METHODS: A total of eighty-three patients with nonmucinous rectal adenocarcinoma received both prototype SMS high-spatial-resolution and conventional rs-EPI sequences. Image quality was subjectively assessed by two experienced radiologists using a 4-point Likert scale (1 = poor, 4 = excellent). The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) of the lesion were measured by two experienced radiologists in the objective assessment. Paired t tests or Mann‒Whitney U tests were used to compare the two groups. The areas under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves (AUCs) were used to determine the predictive value of the ADCs in discriminating well-differentiated rectal cancer in the two groups. The T stage of rectal cancer was inversely correlated with the ADCs measured on high-resolution rs-EPI (r = -0.622, p < 0.001) and rs-EPI (r = -0.567, p < 0.001). The AUC of high-resolution rs-EPI in predicting well-differentiated rectal cancer was 0.768. CONCLUSION High-resolution rs-EPI with SMS imaging provided significantly higher image quality, SNRs, and CNRs and more stable ADC measurements than conventional rs-EPI. Additionally, the pretreatment ADC on high-resolution rs-EPI could discriminate well-differentiated rectal cancer.

Abstract
It is challenging to overcome motion artifacts in diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) of the abdomen. This study aimed to evaluate the image quality of motion-corrected DWI of the liver using non-rigid registration in comparison with conventional DWI (c-DWI) in patients with liver diseases. Eighty-nine patients who underwent 3-T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the liver were retrospectively included. DWI was performed using c-DWI and non-rigid motion-corrected (moco) DWI was performed in addition to c-DWI. The image quality and conspicuity of hepatic focal lesions were scored using a five-point scale by two radiologists and compared between the two DWI image sets. The apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) was measured in three regions of the liver parenchyma and in hepatic focal lesions, and compared between the two DWI image sets. Moco-DWI achieved higher scores in image quality compared to c-DWI in terms of liver edge sharpness and hepatic vessel margin delineation. The conspicuity scores of hepatic focal lesions were higher in moco-DWI. The standard deviation values of ADC of the liver parenchyma were lower in the moco-DWI than in the c-DWI. Moco-DWI using non-rigid registration showed improved overall image quality and provided more reliable ADC measurement, with an equivalent scan time, compared with c-DWI.

Abstract
Purpose To examine the clinical value of multiband (MB) sensitivity encoding (SENSE)-accelerated diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) for breast imaging by performing quantitative and qualitative comparisons with conventional diffusion-weighted echo-planar imaging, or conventional DWI (cDWI). Materials and Methods In this prospective study (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier NCT03607552), women with breast cancer were recruited from July 2018 to July 2019 to undergo additional MB SENSE DWI during clinical 3-T breast MRI examinations. The cDWI and MB SENSE DWI acquisitions were assessed both quantitatively and qualitatively. Regions of interest were defined for tumorous and normal tissue, and the tumor apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), and signal index (SI) were calculated for both DWI methods. Three readers independently reviewed the two acquisitions side by side and provided relative image quality scores. Tumor ADC, CNR, and SI measures were compared between cDWI and MB SENSE DWI acquisitions by using a paired t test, and reader preferences were evaluated by using the sign test. Results The study included 38 women (median age, 48 years; range, 28-83 years). Overall agreement was good between cDWI and MB SENSE DWI tumor ADC measures (intraclass correlation coefficient, 0.87 [95% CI: 0.75, 0.94]), and no differences were evident in the ADC (median, 0.93 × 10-3 mm2/sec vs 0.87 ×10-3 mm2/sec; P = .50), CNR (2.2 vs 2.3; P = .17), or SI (9.2 vs 9.2; P = .23) measurements. The image quality of cDWI and MB SENSE DWI acquisitions were considered equal for 51% of images (58 of 114), whereas MB SENSE DWI was preferred more often than cDWI (37% [42 of 114] vs 12% [14 of 114]; P < .001). The preference for MB SENSE DWI was most often attributed to better fat suppression. Conclusion MB SENSE can be used to accelerate breast DWI acquisition times without compromising the image quality or the fidelity of quantitative ADC measurements. Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this prospective study was to compare scan time, image quality, signal-to-noise Ratio (SNR), and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values of simultaneous multi-slice accelerated diffusion-weighted imaging with motion-correction (DWI SMS Moco) to standard diffusion-weighted imaging (sDWI) in free-breathing abdominal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in pediatric and young adult patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). MATERIAL AND METHODS 16 patients (7 male and 9 female, 12-41 years old) with CF were examined prospectively in a single-center from November 2020 to March 2021 on a 1.5 Tesla clinical MR scanner. The characteristics of overall image quality and delimitability of mesenteric lymph nodes were evaluated using a 5-point Likert scale by two experienced pediatric radiologists independently from each other. Quantitative parameters with SNR and ADC values were assessed in 8 different locations and compared using a Wilcoxon signed-rank test. RESULTS The acquisition time for DWI SMS Moco was 32% shorter than for sDWI. Regarding quality comparison, overall image quality and delimitability of mesenteric lymph nodes were significant higher in DWI SMS Moco (p ≤ 0.05 for both readers). The readers preferred DWI SMS Moco to sDWI in all cases (16/16). Mean SNR values from DWI SMS Moco and sDWI were similar in 7 from 8 locations. The ADC values showed no significant difference between DWI SMS Moco and sDWI in any of the evaluated locations (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The DWI SMS Moco improves overall image quality and delimitability of mesenteric lymph nodes compared to sDWI with similar SNR and ADC values and a distinguished reduction of scan time in free-breathing by one third. We conclude that MRI with DWI SMS Moco could be helpful in monitoring the effect of the high-efficiency modulator (HEM) therapy in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients homozygous or heterozygous for F508del in the abdomen.
