A Perspective on Women's Health With Cupping Therapy: A Review

Cupping therapy is an ancient traditional and complementary treatment practice. Cupping therapy has recently attracted global attention in the promotion, protection, and treatment of health. Research is also being conducted on the potential benefits of cupping therapy in the treatment of conditions related to women's health. This study provides an overview of the application of cupping therapy in the field of women's health and an understanding its importance.

Evaluation of clinical characters and use of alternative medicines in the management of headache and predictors of treatment satisfaction among Saudi adults - A community-based study in Saudi Arabia

Background and objective

The use of alternative medicine (AM) is rising globally. Hence this study aimed to assess the Use of and Satisfaction with Alternative Medicine in the management of headache and Related Factors in Individuals, living in Saudi Arabia.

Methods

A cross-sectional study was conducted from July to December 2023 using an online questionnaire in Riyadh Saudi Arabia. The data was collected using a series, of prevalidated questionnaires aimed to assess the utilization and satisfaction of AM for the headache. Convenience sampling was applied for data collection.

Results

A response rate of 93.1 % (n = 550) was obtained. Among the respondents, 78.7 % reported having headaches, while 69.2 % had a history of using AMs for headaches. However, among the users of AMs, 65.9 % of them were satisfied with the results of AMs, of those who were satisfied, 33.7 % said that AMs helped to prevent headache attacks, and 53.8 % reported that AMs use reduced pain intensity. The regression results demonstrated that there was a significant relationship between the satisfaction of AM for the headache and age (p < 0.004), and Active in sports (p < 0.019) and severity of the headache pain (p < 0.081).

Conclusion

The findings reported that relatively high prevalence of AMs used to manage headaches, while 65.9% of the users were satisfied with the outcomes, the satisfaction was found to have a significant relationship with age, activity in sports and severity of pain. To avoid negative effects of AM, it is recommended to use under the qualified healthcare professionals.

Role of wet-cupping therapy in physiological and mental pains in patients with migraine: A quasi-clinical trial

BACKGROUND

There is growing evidence of the potential benefits of wet-cupping therapy in reducing physiological pain severity in migraine; however, the role of this therapy on mental pain is unclear in this process. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the effectiveness of wet-cupping therapy on physiological and mental pains in patients with migraine. In this study, 72 migraine patients were treated with wet-cupping therapy and followed up after 1 month.

METHODS

The severity of physiological and mental pain was measured before therapy, 10 minutes and 1 month following therapy.

RESULTS

The study showed that patients in the wet-cupping therapy had a significantly lower mean value of physiological (0.42 vs 3.39; P < .001) and mental pain (1.60 vs 3.06; P < .001) compared to the patients in the control group, respectively. The mean value of the physiological was significantly decreased from 6.97 (baseline) to 0.73 (10 minutes) and 0.63 (1 month; P < .001) in the wet-cupping therapy patients, and the mean value of mental pain from 3.76 (baseline) to 0.71 (10 minutes) and 1.71 (1 month; P < .001). The mean values of physiological and mental pains were significantly reduced (from 7.80-3.39; P < .001) and (from 3.48-3.06; P = .0044), respectively. The level of physiological pain severity was significantly decreased with a decreasing level of mental pain severity at the posttest within the control (r = 0.5471; P = .0002) and the wet-cupping therapy (r = 0.3814; P .0412).

CONCLUSION

This study showed that the physiological pain was controlled by the mental pain in the wet-cupping therapy.

Effectiveness of wet cupping therapy on relieving pain in patients with chronic migraine: an observational study

BACKGROUND

Chronic migraine is a disabling condition that negatively affects many aspects of migraineurs' lives. Patients who use pharmacological agents experience various side effects. Some studies have reported clinical improvement following wet cupping therapy in migraine patients. This study examined the effectiveness of wet cupping therapy on headache severity and its complications in patients with migraine.

METHODS

In this study, a total of 29 patients previously diagnosed with migraine were treated with wet cupping therapy and followed up for headache severity. The severity of pain was measured before therapy, 1 h after therapy, and one month after therapy. The wet cupping therapy was performed by an experienced nurse who was not part of the research team.

RESULTS

The mean age of the patients was 36.17 (Sta. Deviation: 10.74 years; range: 22-68 years), and on average, patients had experienced migraine for 11.14 years. The severity of headache pain was decreased significantly from 6.66 (very intense pain) before cupping therapy to 2.48 (discomforting pain) 1 h after cupping therapy and 0.72 (very mild pain) one month after cupping therapy (p<0.001). The observed complications were skin pigmentation (6.9%), skin scarring (24.1%), and itching in the cupping region (31.0%).

CONCLUSIONS

The present study suggests a significant improvement in the severity of headache in migraine patients 1 h and one month after wet cupping therapy.

Mapping Assessments Instruments for Headache Disorders against the ICF Biopsychosocial Model of Health and Disability

Headache disorders have a strong impact on sufferers’ lives. However, the “content” of assessment instruments addressing concepts, such as disability and quality of life (QoL), has not comprehensively been addressed. We searched SCOPUS for research papers in which outcome measures were used in adult populations of patients with migraine, tension-type headache (TTH), and cluster headache (CH). The content of single instruments was then mapped against the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health. A total of 150 papers and 26 instruments were included: 15 addressed disability or impact, two addressed work-related difficulties, and nine addressed QoL. Few instruments were commonly used across the conditions and covered domains of functioning were impact on daily life activities, homework, school, and work-related tasks, leisure time, informal and family relations, pain, emotional difficulties, energy level, and impulse control. Most of the research is based on instruments that were developed for migraine, which is critical for CH, and the impact of headache disorders on work-related activities is poorly acknowledged. Further research is needed to expand the scope of headaches impact on daily life activities, and on environmental factors relevant to headache disorders to raise knowledge on the less represented areas, e.g., TTH impact.

Cupping for neurodermatitis: A protocol of systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

Neurodermatitis is a common inflammatory and allergic disease, characterized by itching and lichenification plaque. Some studies have reported cupping therapy (CT) for the treatment of neurodermatitis. However, the effectiveness and safety are still uncertain. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of CT for the treatment of patients with neurodermatitis.

METHODS

We will retrieve the following electronic databases systematically: Pubmed, Web of Science, Embase, the Cochrane Library, Chinese Scientific Journal Database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure Database, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, and Wanfang database from their inception to December 2020. Other literature resources will be manually searched. Published randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and quasi-randomized controlled trials (q-RCTs) on the topic will be retrieved by 2 investigators independently. We will apply a fixed-effect model or random effect model basis on the heterogeneity test and employ with RevMan 5.3 software for data synthesis. The total clinical effective rate will be selected as the primary outcome, skin disease quality of life index score, recurrence rate, and adverse events as secondary outcomes.

RESULTS

This study will comprehensively summarize the high-quality trials to determine the efficacy and safety of CT for the treatment of patients with neurodermatitis.

CONCLUSION

Our systematic review will present evidence for the efficacy and safety of CT to neurodermatitis patients.
