Abstract
Focusing on the difficulty of lubrication in the scavenging port area of a cylinder liner of an actual marine two-stroke diesel engine, the transportation of interface lubricating oil was studied. In this paper, a biomimetic fish scale texture composed of fan-shaped and arc-shaped curves is designed, and the numerical simulation model is established according to this texture. Through simulation research, the variation rules of pressure distribution, interfacial velocity, and outlet volume flow rate on the biomimetic fish scale texture surface at different velocities and temperatures are obtained. Moreover, the biomimetic fish scale texture is machined on the surface of a reciprocating friction pair by laser etching, and the oil transport speed of the interface is tested under different conditions. The results show that the existence of the biomimetic fish scale texture on the friction pair can effectively improve the pressure difference between interfaces during reciprocating motion. The pressure difference enhances the flow properties of interfacial lubricating oil, thereby improving its mass transport capacity. In addition, increasing the movement speed and oil temperature can increase the oil transport speed of interfacial lubricating oil. The results of the experiment suggest that, under continuous and discontinuous interface conditions, compared with a friction pair without texture, the improvement rate of the lubricating oil transport speed at the interface of the friction pair with the biomimetic fish scale texture can reach 40.7% and 69.1%, respectively.

Abstract
This paper explores online stiffness modulation within a single tail stroke for swimming soft robots. Despite advances in stiffening mechanisms, little attention has been given to dynamically adjusting stiffness in real-time, presenting a challenge in developing mechanisms with the requisite bandwidth to match tail actuation. Achieving an optimal balance between thrust and efficiency in swimming soft robots remains elusive, and the paper addresses this challenge by proposing a novel mechanism for independent stiffness control, leveraging fluid-driven stiffening within a patterned pouch. Inspired by fluidic-driven actuation, this approach exhibits high bandwidth and facilitates significant stiffness changes. We perform experiments to demonstrate how this mechanism enhances both thrust and swimming efficiency. The tail actuation and fluid-driven stiffening can be optimized for a specific combination of thrust and efficiency, tailored to the desired maneuver type. The paper further explores the complex interaction between the soft body and surrounding fluid and provides fluid dynamics insights gained from the vortices created during actuation. Through frequency modulation and online stiffening, the study extends the Pareto front of achievable thrust generation and swimming efficiency.

Abstract
Collective behaviors in moving fish originate from social interactions, which are thought to be driven by beneficial factors, such as predator avoidance and reduced energy expenditure. Despite numerical simulations and physical experiments aiming at the hydrodynamic mechanisms and interaction rules, how shoaling is influenced by flow velocity and group size is still only partially understood. In this study, spatial distributions, kinematics, and synchronization states between pairs (smallest subsystem of a shoal) of Gobiocypris rarus were investigated in a recirculating swim tunnel with increasing flow velocities from 0.1 to 0.5 m/s (Ucrit = 0.6 m/s). Tests of single fish were also conducted as the control group. The results of spatial distributions showed that fish pairs preferred to swim in the side-by-side configuration under high flows, while under low flows the neighboring fish's positions were more uniformly distributed around the focal fish in the transverse direction. Kinematic analysis revealed that fish pairs adopted similar tail beats (i.e., frequency and Strouhal number) as single fish in low flows, while in high flows both the frequency and Strouhal number of fish pairs were slightly lower. Moreover, the synchronization rates of fish pairs were found to increase with flow velocities, suggesting that synchronized swimming may be beneficial, especially in high flows.

Abstract
Appendage shape is formed during development (and re-formed during regeneration) according to spatial and temporal cues that orchestrate local cellular morphogenesis. The caudal fin is the primary appendage used for propulsion in most fish species, and exhibits a range of distinct morphologies adapted for different swimming strategies, however the molecular mechanisms responsible for generating these diverse shapes remain mostly unknown. In zebrafish, caudal fins display a forked shape, with longer supportive bony rays at the periphery and shortest rays at the center. Here, we show that a premature, transient pulse of sonic hedgehog a (shha) overexpression during late embryonic development results in excess proliferation and growth of the central rays, causing the adult caudal fin to grow into a triangular, truncate shape. Both global and regional ectopic shha overexpression are sufficient to alter fin shape, and forked shape may be rescued by subsequent treatment with an antagonist of the canonical Shh pathway. The induced truncate fins show a decreased fin ray number and fail to form the hypural diastema that normally separates the dorsal and ventral fin lobes. While forked fins regenerate their original forked morphology, truncate fins regenerate truncate, suggesting that positional memory of the fin rays can be permanently altered by a transient treatment during embryogenesis. Ray finned fish have evolved a wide spectrum of caudal fin morphologies, ranging from truncate to forked, and the current work offers insights into the developmental mechanisms that may underlie this shape diversity.

Abstract
Scyphomedusae are widespread in the oceans and their swimming has provided valuable insights into the hydrodynamics of animal propulsion. Most of this research has focused on symmetrical, linear swimming. However, in nature, medusae typically swim circuitous, nonlinear paths involving frequent turns. Here we describe swimming turns by the scyphomedusaAurelia auritaduring which asymmetric bell margin motions produce rotation around a linearly translating body center. These jellyfish 'skid' through turns and the degree of asynchrony between opposite bell margins is an approximate predictor of turn magnitude during a pulsation cycle. The underlying neuromechanical organization of bell contraction contributes substantially to asynchronous bell motions and inserts a stochastic rotational component into the directionality of scyphomedusan swimming. These mechanics are important for natural populations because asynchronous bell contraction patterns are commonin situand result in frequent turns by naturally swimming medusae.

Abstract
In nature, some fish can adhere tightly to the surface of stones, aquatic plants, and even other fish bodies. This adhesion behavior allows these fish to fix, eat, hide, and migrate in complex and variable aquatic environments. The adhesion function is realized by the special mouth and sucker tissue of fish. Inspired by adhesion fish, extensive research has recently been carried out. Therefore, this paper presents a brief overview to better explore underwater adhesion mechanisms and provide bionic applications. Firstly, the adhesion organs and structures of biological prototypes (e.g., clingfish, remora, Garra, suckermouth catfish, hill stream loach, and goby) are presented separately, and the underwater adhesion mechanisms are analyzed. Then, based on bionics, it is explained that the adhesion structures and components are designed and created for applications (e.g., flexible gripping adhesive discs and adhesive motion devices). Furthermore, we offer our perspectives on the limitations and future directions.

Abstract
Many fishes use their tail as the main thrust producer during swimming. This fin's diversity in shape and size influences its physical interactions with water as well as its ecological functions. Two distinct tail morphologies are common in bony fishes: flat, truncate tails which are best suited for fast accelerations via drag forces, and forked tails that promote economical, fast cruising by generating lift-based thrust. This assumption is based primarily on studies of the lunate caudal fin of Scombrids (i.e. tuna, mackerel), which is comparatively stiff and exhibits an airfoil-type cross-section. However, this is not representative of the more commonly observed and taxonomically widespread flexible forked tail, yet similar assumptions about economical cruising are widely accepted. Here, we present the first comparative experimental study of forked versus truncate tail shape and compare the fluid mechanical properties and energetics of two common nearshore fish species. We examined the hypothesis that forked tails provide a hydrodynamic advantage over truncate tails at typical cruising speeds. Using experimentally derived pressure fields, we show that the forked tail produces thrust via acceleration reaction forces like the truncate tail during cruising but at increased energetic costs. This reduced efficiency corresponds to differences in the performance of the two tail geometries and body kinematics to maintain similar overall thrust outputs. Our results offer insights into the benefits and tradeoffs of two common fish tail morphologies and shed light on the functional morphology of fish swimming to guide the development of bio-inspired underwater technologies.
