Effect of an acidic sodium salt on the polymerization behavior of self-adhesive resin cements formulated with different adhesive monomers

The Effect of the Initiator/Activator/Accelerator Ratio on the Degree of Conversion, Film Thickness, Flow, and Cytotoxicity of Dual-Cured Self-Adhesive Resin Cements

Although self-adhesive resin cements are convenient and less technique-sensitive materials for dental clinicians, they exhibit a lower degree of conversion due to acidic components in their composition. Supplementation of the initiator, accelerator, and activator in self-adhesive resin cements has been suggested to compensate for the lower degree of conversion. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different combinations of self-curing initiators, self-curing activators, and accelerators on the degree of conversion (DC) of self-adhesive resin cements. A dual-cured self-adhesive resin was prepared using six combinations of initiators, activators, and accelerators. The change in the DC over time was evaluated with and without light curing. The film thickness, flow properties, and cytotoxicity of each formulation were assessed. The results showed that all supplemental components had an effect on increasing the DC, but a greater increase in the DC was observed in the following order: activator, accelerator, and initiator. The cytotoxicity of the resin cements was related to the DC values, as resin cements with lower DC values exhibited higher cytotoxicity. The film thickness met the ISO standards for all groups. The results suggest that utilizing an activator is the most effective approach to enhance the DC in self-adhesive resin cement and that cytotoxicity tended to increase with lower DC values, whereas film thickness and flow properties demonstrated no correlation with DC values.

A randomized controlled study on color stability of tetracycline teeth restored with ceramic veneer

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to evaluate the color stability of tetracycline teeth restored with ceramic veneers of different thicknesses combined with different resin cement systems after aging.

METHODS

Twenty patients with tetracycline teeth, including two maxillary central incisors, were selected clinically. The patients were randomly divided into four groups and restored with 0.5 and 0.75 mm ceramic veneers by using a veneer adhesive system, either with light-cured or dual-cured reaction. The color difference (ΔE) values after cementation and 1, 6, 12, and 24 months of use were obtained by quantification of L*, a*, and b* values with a colorimeter. The results were analyzed statistically with two-way ANOVA and Student's t test.

RESULTS

The ΔE values of ceramic veneers detected after aging were less than 2.25. The 0.5 mm groups exhibited greater color change than the 0.75 mm-thick veneers (P<0.05). No significant difference was found on the color change of dual- or light-cured resin cements.

CONCLUSIONS

Resin cements and veneer thickness influence the color of ceramic veneers after aging. Cementation of veneers with either dual- or light-cured resin cements does not affect the long-term color stability of tetracycline teeth differently.

Effect of Pretreatment and Activation Mode on the Interfacial Adaptation of Nanoceramic Resin Inlay and Self-adhesive Resin Cement

OBJECTIVES

The first objective of this study was to determine if the luting material used for resin nanoceramic inlay affects interfacial adaptation. The second was to investigate whether pretreatment and the adhesive curing method before cementation affects interfacial adaptation. The final objective was to compare activation modes of luting material.

METHODS

Class I cavities were prepared on extracted human third molars. Resin nanoceramic inlays were fabricated using Lava Ultimate CAD/CAM block (3 M). For the control groups, inlays were cemented using Panavia V5 (Kuraray Noritake). For the experimental groups, teeth were randomly divided into five experimental groups with four subgroups using different self-adhesive cements (SACs). Cement in Group I was dual-cured without pretreatment. In Group II, the cement was dual-cured after polyacrylic acid treatment of the tooth cavity. In Groups III and IV, the cement was dual-cured after universal dentin adhesive treatment with pre-cure and co-cure methods. In Group V, the inlay was cemented in self-cure mode. After thermocycling, interfacial adaptation at the inlay-tooth interface was measured using swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) imaging. Finally, polymerization shrinkage strain of the luting material was measured and compared.

RESULTS

Interfacial adaptation differed depending on the luting material. After application of a universal adhesive, some subgroups showed improved interfacial adaptation. Interfacial adaptation and polymerization shrinkage strain differed significantly depending on activation mode.

SIGNIFICANCE

Interfacial adaptation for a resin nanoceramic inlay can differ according to the type of SAC and activation mode. For some SACs, application of a universal adhesive before cementation improves interfacial adaptation.

Sulfinates and sulfonates as high performance co-initiators in CQ based systems: Towards aromatic amine-free systems for dental restorative materials

OBJECTIVE

The aim of our study is to develop amine-free photoinitiating systems (PISs) for the polymerization of representative dental methacrylate resins under blue light irradiation. PISs based on camphorquinone (CQ)/sulfinate and CQ/sulfonate, eventually in combination with an iodonium salt, are proposed and compared to the well-established CQ/amine system. The polymerization performances of thick (1.4 mm) samples of different methacrylate blends upon exposure to a commercial blue LED centered at 477 nm under air are described. Finally, the performances of the new developed PISs are evaluated for dental composites application.

METHODS

FTIR is used to monitor the photopolymerization profiles. ESR spectroscopy and electrochemical experiments are used to identify the radicals generated. Mechanical properties measurements and color stability measurements are carried out to determine the key properties of the dental composites prepared.

RESULTS AND SIGNIFICIANCE

The performances of the new proposed PISs for the photopolymerization of thick (1.4 mm) samples of methacrylate upon exposure to a blue dental LED under air are excellent. Similar or better performances and bleaching properties are obtained with the new proposed amine-free systems compared to those reached with the CQ/amine reference system. Dental composites with excellent mechanical properties and exceptional color stability are obtained. The involved chemical mechanisms for the initiation step were also established.
