A Scoping Review of Mixed Methods Research About Physical Activity for Children With Disabilities

The purpose of this scoping review was to examine how mixed methods research (MMR) has been applied in adapted physical activity (APA) research about children and adolescents age 5-18 years with a disability. Six electronic databases were searched to retrieve relevant studies published between 2003 and 2020. Sixty-four studies were identified and analyzed. The findings were organized into five categories of interest: publication information, study objectives, mixed methods research design, participants' information, and data integration. Challenges related to the design and publication of MMR in APA were uncovered, and suggestions for improvement are provided. This study adds to the knowledge of MMR design, and it provides an understanding of the underlying processes and methodological strategies that have guided this approach in APA research. This article will encourage APA researchers to engage in MMR while also aligning future studies with contemporary MMR literature and publication standards.

Physical activity programs for cardiovascular outcomes in community wheelchair users: A systematic review

Purpose

Physical inactivity is one of the important factors leading to chronic diseases including cardiovascular disease (CVD) in individuals with disabilities. However, not many Physical Activity (PA) interventions are available for improving the efficacy of PA and cardiovascular outcomes among community wheelchair users. Therefore, this systematic review will appraise the existing PA interventions for the community dwelling wheelchair users; we especially examined features of the PA programs that showed the improvements in PA and the CVD outcomes compared to the interventions that did not show any improvements in these outcomes among these population. The study also aimed to provide some recommendations for future research.

Materials and Methods

A comprehensive and systematic search of literature published between 2015 and 2020 using the databases Scopus, Pubmed, Embase, and Cochrane CENTRAL was conducted. This review has followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review (PRISMA) guidelines. The quality of the evidence was assessed by Using Joanna Briggs Institute's critical appraisal tool. Studies that tested the efficacy of PA interventions for community-dwelling adult wheelchair users and published in English were involved. Two reviewers reviewed the literature and any disagreements among these reviewers were resolved by a third reviewer.

Results

Fourteen articles were selected for this review. Most of the studies reported improvements in PA. A few studies followed up the participants and majority of the studies have looked at the CVD outcomes.

Conclusion

Large-scale studies with follow-ups, and community participatory research that evaluates the effect of PA interventions on PA and CVD outcomes among wheelchair users are needed.

Physical Activity and Exercise Participation among Malaysian Children (Able-Bodied vs. Physical Disability): A Cross-Sectional Study

Globally, physical activity levels (PAL) among able-bodied and children with a form of disability remain low. This study aims to characterize PAL and identify the demographic variables affecting children from partaking exercises to promote active lifestyles. Methods: The Physical Activity Scale for Individuals with Physical Disabilities questionnaire was used for the study. A total of 140 data responses were collected online or physically via passive snowball recruitment and quantitatively analyzed. Results: Five factors were extracted from the dimensions, consisting of household chores, household maintenance, high intensity exercise training, miscellaneous activities and school-related activities. Able-bodied children were significantly (p = 0.000) more active (median = 15.05, IQR = 13.06) than children with physical disabilities (median = 3.09, IQR = 2.58). The B40 household group reported significantly (p < 0.05, MET < 5.16/week) lower participation in health-beneficial (moderate-vigorous intensity) exercises as recommended by international guidelines. Conclusion: Children with physical disabilities reported significantly lower education achievements and PAL compared to their able-bodied counterpart. The majority of Malaysian children (69.3%) surveyed did not achieve the recommended aerobic exercise prescription.

Lived experience of parents and carers of people receiving services in rural areas under the National Disability Insurance Scheme

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this study was to investigate the lived experience of parenting or caring for a person with a disability receiving services under the National Disability Insurance Scheme in rural Australia.

DESIGN

Qualitative study guided by the phenomenology of practice.

SETTING

Rural areas of New South Wales (MM 3-7).

PARTICIPANTS

Participants were 5 parents and one carer of people receiving National Disability Insurance Scheme services who resided in rural New South Wales.

DESIGN

Participants engaged in a semi-structured interview about their lived experiences caring for someone accessing services under the National Disability Insurance Scheme in rural New South Wales. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed thematically.

RESULTS

Three themes emerged from the data analysis. 'More than a disability' described the absence of understanding of family and carer challenges when National Disability Insurance Scheme plans were designed and implemented. 'Fighting for funding and services' described that while the National Disability Insurance Scheme increased funding support, parents and carers experienced limited support navigating the National Disability Insurance Scheme. 'Cold as Ice' encompassed parents' and carers' descriptions of their relationship with National Disability Insurance Scheme staff. These challenges were further impacted by the limited choice and availability of health service providers in rural areas.

CONCLUSION

Participants felt that the National Disability Insurance Scheme had created additional stress and confusion in their lives and at times had hindered the achievement of the goals of their family member with a disability. The voices of parents and carers is a critical one, and it is essential that rural parents' and carers' needs are considered and supported in future planning of the National Disability Insurance Scheme.
