Evaluating the efficacy of auricular acupuncture for chemotherapy-induced taste alterations: A pilot randomized controlled trial

PURPOSE

Irrespective of the development of acupuncture-based interventions, clinical evidence regarding their efficacy remains controversial owing to issues with the study design and an unclear risk of bias. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of auricular acupuncture in managing taste alterations in patients with cancer undergoing platinum-based chemotherapy.

METHODS

We conducted a pilot randomized controlled trial involving 73 patients randomly assigned to an auricular acupuncture or a control group. The primary outcome was the severity of chemotherapy-induced taste alterations, and the secondary outcomes included quality of life and negative emotions of the patients.

RESULTS

A total of 49 participants completed the study. Compared to the control group, patients in the auricular acupuncture group showed significant reductions in discomfort, general taste alterations, and total scores on the Chemotherapy-induced Taste Alteration Scale (all p < 0.05). Furthermore, we observed significant improvements in quality of life, including physical function (p = 0.007), role function (p = 0.006), emotional function (p = 0.016), nausea and vomiting (p = 0.021), appetite loss (p = 0.046), and significant improvements in anxiety and depression (p < 0.01).

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings suggest that auricular acupuncture may be a beneficial intervention for managing chemotherapy-induced taste alterations in patients with cancer receiving platinum-based chemotherapy. It may also contribute to improvements in quality of life and negative emotions. However, these results are preliminary, and further evaluation with larger randomized controlled trials is necessary.

The efficacy and safety of acupuncture in the treatment of taste disorders after rehabilitation from COVID-19: A protocol for systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

Since the outbreak of the new crown pneumonia epidemic, although it has had a serious impact on people's lives and health in itself, the sequelae that accompany coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have also had a serious impact on people's mental health and quality of life. Taste disorder (TD) is one of the sequelae of COVID-19. Patients may experience reduced or even absent taste sensation, which seriously affects their real life. The efficacy of acupuncture in the treatment of taste disorders has been well reported, but there is a lack of evidence-based medical evidence. Therefore, this study set out to systematically evaluate the efficacy and safety of acupuncture in the treatment of post-COVID-19 taste disorder.

METHODS

According to the retrieval strategies, randomized controlled trials on the acupuncture for COVID-19 TD were obtained from Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Embase, PubMed, Web of Science, the Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, the Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, the Chinese Scientific Journal Database and the Wanfang Database, regardless of publication date, or language. Studies were screened based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, and the Cochrane risk bias assessment tool was used to evaluate the quality of the studies. The meta-analysis was performed using Review Manager (RevMan 5.4) and StataSE 15.0 software. Ultimately, the evidentiary grade for the results will be evaluated. This systematic evaluation protocol is registered in PROSPERO under the registration ID CRD42022364653.

RESULTS

The results of this meta-analysis will be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal for publication.

CONCLUSION

This meta-analysis will evaluate the effect of acupuncture and moxibustion on TD caused by sequelae of COVID-19, providing evidence as to the treatment in these patients.

Efficacy and safety of acupuncture in the treatment of the sequela of olfactory disorders after infection with COVID-19: A protocol for systematic review and meta analysis

From the end of 2019 to now, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has put enormous strain on the world's health systems. As a characteristic sign of COVID-19 patient, olfactory dysfunction (OD) poses considerable problems for patients. In China, acupuncture has been widely used to treat OD caused by COVID-19, but there is still a lack of evidence-based medical evaluation. This study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of acupuncture for the treatment of COVID-19 OD.

METHODS

Recovery of Olfactory Function in Postviral Olfactory Dysfunction Patients after Acupuncture Treatment

Introduction. The aims of this study were to assess the impact of traditional Chinese acupuncture (TCA) in postviral olfactory dysfunction (PVOD) patients who were refractory to standardized treatment and to compare the results with the impact observed in an observation group. Methods. Fifty patients who presented to the outpatient clinic with PVOD and were refractory to standardized treatment were included: 25 were treated with TCA and 25 patients were simply observed. A subjective olfactory test was performed using the University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test (UPSIT). The effects of TCA were compared with the results obtained in the observation group. Results. Improved olfactory function was observed in eleven patients treated with TCA compared with four patients in the observation group. This study revealed significantly improved olfactory function outcomes in patients who underwent acupuncture compared with the observation group. No significant differences in olfaction recovery were found according to age, gender, or duration of disease between the two groups; however, hyposmic patients recovered at a higher rate than anosmic patients. Conclusion. TCA may aid the treatment of PVOD patients who are refractory to drugs or other therapies.

[Dysosmia : current aspects of diagnostics and therapy]

Olfactory dysfunction is a common disorder, especially in elderly people. From the etiological point of view a differentiation is made between sinunasal, traumatic and non-sinunasal causes of dysosmia. Olfactory disorders are often observed in neurodegenerative diseases, especially in patients with Parkinson's disease or Alzheimer's disease. Apart from an extensive medical history important diagnostic tools are a complete ear nose and throat (ENT) examination including nasal endoscopy and olfactory testing, for example, with "sniffin' sticks". For diagnostic purposes modern imaging procedures, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are becoming more and more important. For testing children, olfactory testing needs to be adapted and depending on the etiology, olfactory training, antiphlogistic and surgical procedures are the most promising therapeutic approaches. In cases of intracranial causes of dysosmia neurosurgeons should know and respect the anatomical structures of the olfactory signal pathway, not least for the long-term prognosis.

[Forty years of acupuncture experience in an ENT practice]

Acupuncture as a complementary method provides optimal conditions for ENT specialists, particularly when somatotopic microsystems are used, e.g., ear, skull, and oral acupuncture. Via points of these systems, pain conditions and functional disorders as well as specific ENT indications (e.g., rhinitis pollinosa, sinusitis, pharyngitis) can be treated successfully. Therapy is performed quickly and without side effects.

Effects of traditional Chinese acupuncture in post-viral olfactory dysfunction

OBJECTIVE

To date, recovery of olfactory function after viral infection of the upper airway cannot be achieved reliably with pharmacotherapy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of traditional Chinese acupuncture (TCA) on olfactory function in patients with persistent post-viral olfactory dysfunction (PVOD).

STUDY DESIGN

Historical cohort study.

SETTING

University Medical Center, Department of Otorhinolaryngology.

SUBJECTS AND METHODS

A total of 15 patients presenting to the outpatient clinic with PVOD were treated by TCA in 10 weekly, 30-minute sessions. Subjective olfactometry was performed with the Sniffin' Sticks test set. Treatment success was defined as an increase in Sniffin' Sticks test scores of at least six points. The effects of TCA, obtained with the chi(2) test, were compared with those of matched pairs suffering from PVOD who had been treated with vitamin B complex over 12 weeks.

RESULTS

Eight patients treated with TCA had improved olfactory function compared with two treated with vitamin B complex. chi(2) test revealed a significantly better outcome in olfactory function in patients undergoing acupuncture compared with patients receiving vitamin B complex (P = 0.02).

CONCLUSION

TCA possibly offers a new therapeutic regimen for post-viral dysosmia. More research in a larger case series is needed before a clearer picture will emerge.
