Mercury in mosses Hylocomium splendens (Hedw.) B.S.G. and Pleurozium schreberi (Brid.) Mitt. from Poland and Alaska: understanding the origin of pollution sources

Soil heavy metal source apportionment and environmental differentiation study in Dulan County, Qinghai Province, using geodetector analysis

Elucidating material sources and investigating the impact of various environmental factors on material source accumulation are important for the environmental restoration of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. This study was conducted within the Borhan Buda Mountain Range of Dulan County, Qinghai Province, China, where 6274 surface soil samples were collected. The geoaccumulation index was employed to assess the levels of heavy metals, including As, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, Sb, Sn, and Zn, in the soil. A comprehensive approach combining principal component analysis (PCA) and geodetector analysis was employed to assess the spatial variation in soil heavy metal origins and the factors that influence them. The findings indicate that the mean concentrations of Pb exceed the background values for the soil in Qinghai Province, with Hg exhibiting low pollution, whereas the other elements showed no contamination. PCA indicated that the soil elements in the Borhan Buda Mountain Range were influenced by four sources, all attributed to the geological background. Geodetector analysis of the factor contributions suggested that geological factors had the strongest explanatory power for the four material sources. Furthermore, the risk detection results demonstrated significant variations in the material source contributions among most subregions when considering three environmental factors in pairs. Interaction detection revealed that the combined influence of two environmental factors on material source contributions was greater than that of the individual factors. Additionally, ecological detection demonstrated significant differences in material source contributions one, two, and three between land cover types and geological backgrounds, whereas no significant differences were observed in material source four between land cover types and geological backgrounds. This study offers valuable insights into the sources of soil elements in Dulan County and the influence of environmental factors on these sources, thereby contributing an essential knowledge base for the protection and management of soil heavy metals in the region.

Significance of the long-term biomonitoring studies for understanding the impact of pollutants on the environment based on a synthesis of 25-year biomonitoring in the Holy Cross Mountains, Poland

This review presents compiled results of complex biomonitoring studies that have been conducted in the Holy Cross Mountains, south-central part of Poland, since the 1990s. The significance of these studies results from several aspects: (i) a number and a variety of plant organisms used, e.g., mosses, lichens, coniferous and deciduous trees, and their tissues (wood, bark, needles, leaves, the aboveground parts of several vascular plants); (ii) applications of a broad scope of instrumental methods aiming at determining major and trace elements (including rare earth elements), organic compounds (PAHs, PCBs, phenols), and stable sulfur isotopes (δ³⁴S); and (iii) different methodological and environmental issues addressed. The comparison and interpretation of results derived from seventeen sampling campaigns carried out between 1994 and 2017 are a valuable source of information on the following: (i) bioaccumulative properties of organisms used in air quality monitoring, (ii) identification and variations of local and regional pollution sources and geochemical landscape patterns and processes over years, and (iii) establishing environmental factors that variously affected chemical composition of plants growing under physiological stress, including roadside vegetation and plants from acid mine drainage areas.

Application of Neutron Activation Analysis for Determination of As, Cr, Hg, and Se in Mosses in the Metropolitan Area of the Valley of Toluca, Mexico

This research presents a study of environmental monitoring at different sampling sites from the Metropolitan Area of the Valley of Toluca (MAVT), Mexico, using mosses (Leskea angustata(Tayl.) andFabronia ciliaris(Brid.)) and soil samples. The epiphytic mosses and soils were sampled in two campaigns within two periods of the year, a rainy and dry-cold season. The selected sampling sites included urban regions (UR), transitional regions (TR), and protected natural areas (PA). The samples were analyzed by the Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA) to determine As, Cr, Hg, and Se principally. However, due to the versatility of the analytic technique used, other elements including Cs, Co, Sc, Sb, Rb, Ce, La, Eu, and Yb were also detected. Statistical analysis (As, Cr, Hg, and Se) was carried out with principal components and cluster analysis methods; this revealed that a good correlation exists between metal content in mosses and the degree of pollution in the areas sampled. The obtained results in mosses showed that the concentrations of As, Cr, Co, Cs, Rb, Ce, La, and Yb increased with respect to the concentrations obtained during the first sampling, whereas Se, Sc, Sb and Eu, concentrations were decreased. For As and Hg, the concentrations were similar in both sampling periods. The soil samples present the most significant concentration.
