Oilfield-produced water treatment using conventional and membrane-based technologies for beneficial reuse: A critical review

Oilfield produced water (OPW) is one of the most important by-products, resulting from oil and gas exploration. The water contains a complex mixture of organic and inorganic compounds such as grease, dissolved salt, heavy metals as well as dissolved and dispersed oils, which can be toxic to the environment and public health. This article critically reviews the complex properties of OPW and various technologies for its treatment. They include the physico-chemical treatment process, biological treatment process, and physical treatment process. Their technological strengths and bottlenecks as well as strategies to mitigate their bottlenecks are elaborated. A particular focus is placed on membrane technologies. Finally, further research direction, challenges, and perspectives of treatment technologies for OPW are discussed. It is conclusively evident from 262 published studies (1965-2021) that no single treatment method is highly effective for OPW treatment as a stand-alone process however, conventional membrane-based technologies are frequently used for the treatment of OPW with the ultrafiltration (UF) process being the most used for oil rejection form OPW and oily waste water. After membrane treatment, treated effluents of the OPW could be reused for irrigation, habitant and wildlife watering, microalgae production, and livestock watering. Overall, this implies that target pollutants in the OPW samples could be removed efficiently for subsequent use, despite its complex properties. In general, it is however important to note that feed quality, desired quality of effluent, cost-effectiveness, simplicity of process are key determinants in choosing the most suitable treatment process for OPW treatment.

A Review of Algae-Based Produced Water Treatment for Biomass and Biofuel Production

Produced water (PW), the largest waste stream generated in oil and gas industries, has the potential to be a harmless product rather than being a waste. Biological processes using microorganisms have proven useful to remediate PW contaminated by petroleum hydrocarbons, complex organic chemicals, and solvents. In particular, the bioremediation of PW using algae is an eco-friendly and low-cost approach due to algae’s ability to utilize certain pollutants as nutrient sources. Therefore, the utilization of PW as an algal growth medium has a great potential to eliminate chemicals from the PW and minimize the large volumes of freshwater needed for cultivation. Although several reviews describing the bioremediation of PW have been published, to the best of our knowledge, no review has exclusively focused on the algae-based PW treatment. Therefore, the present review is dedicated to filling this gap by portraying the many different facets of the algae cultivation in PW. Several algal species that are known to thrive in a wide range of salinity and the critical steps for their cultivation in hypersaline PW have been identified. Overall, this comprehensive review highlights the PW bioremediation using algae and brings attention to utilizing PW to grow biomass that can be processed to generate biofuels and useful bioproducts.

Cultivation of lipid-producing microalgae in struvite-precipitated liquid digestate for biodiesel production

BACKGROUND

Using liquid digestate from the biogas industry as a medium to culture lipid-producing microalgae is considered mutually beneficial for digestate valorization and for reducing the cost of microalgal cultivation. However, the low transmittance and high ammonium (NH₄⁺-N) levels in liquid digestate negatively influence microalgae growth.

RESULTS

Struvite precipitation was used to pretreat liquid digestate. To obtain struvite-precipitated supernatant with an ideal transmittance, NH₄⁺-N concentration, salinity, and N:P ratio for microalgal growth, there should be a 1:1.2:1.2 NH₄⁺:Mg²⁺:PO₄^3- molar ratio in the liquid digestate, with KH₂PO₄ and MgCl₂ added through continuous stirring. The addition and stirring was subsequently stopped when the pH reached 8.5. Of the nine tested microalgae species, Dictyosphaerium ehrenbergianum exhibited the best growth in the supernatant. The biomass productivity and lipid content of D. ehrenbergianum cultured in the struvite-precipitated supernatant were 161.06 mg/l/days and 34.33%, respectively, which was higher than when cultured in the standard BG-11 medium. Moreover, the struvite-precipitated supernatant improved the accumulation of monounsaturated fatty acids and saturated fatty acids.

CONCLUSIONS

This study described a new way to combine liquid digestate treatment and microalgal biodiesel production. The struvite-pretreated liquid digestate can be used to culture D. ehrenbergianum for biodiesel production.
