Synthetic versatility: the C-P bond odyssey

C-P bond formation reactions have garnered significant attention due to the widespread presence of organophosphorus compounds in pharmaceuticals, phosphine-containing ligands, pesticides, and materials science. Consequently, various efficient methodologies have been established in recent decades for constructing C-P bonds. This review article traces the historical evolution of C-P bond research and explores the prospects of C-P bond formation. It contrasts biotechnological approaches with chemical synthesis, emphasizing the critical importance of precision and innovation in developing novel C-P structures. A forward-looking perspective is provided on the role of computational tools and machine learning in optimizing C-P bond synthesis and discovering new compounds. The article explores prospective avenues for reactions that form C-P bonds and advocates for enhanced interdisciplinary collaboration to propel scientific and technological advancements.

Hydroxy- and Amino-Phosphonates and -Bisphosphonates: Synthetic Methods and Their Biological Applications

Phosphonates and bisphosphonates are stable analogs of phosphates and pyrophosphates that are characterized by one and two carbon–phosphorus bonds, respectively. Among the various phosphonates and bisphosphonates, hydroxy and amino substitutes are of interest as effective in medicinal and industrial chemistry. For example, hydroxy bisphosphonates have proven to be effective for the prevention of bone loss, especially in osteoporotic disease. On the other hand, different substitutions on the carbon atom connected to phosphorus have led to the synthesis of many different hydroxy- and amino-phosphonates and -bisphosphonates, each with its distinct physical, chemical, biological, therapeutic, and toxicological characteristics. Dialkyl or aryl esters of phosphonate and bisphosphonate compounds undergo the hydrolysis process readily and gave valuable materials with wide applications in pharmaceutical and agriculture. This review aims to demonstrate the ongoing preparation of various classes of hydroxy- and amino-phosphonates and -bisphosphonates. Furthermore, the current review summarizes and comprehensively describes articles on the biological applications of hydroxyl- and amino-phosphonates and -bisphosphonates from 2015 until today.

The use of pesticides in Polish agriculture after integrated pest management (IPM) implementation

The aim of the conducted study was to characterize the attitudes and practices of Polish farmers in the area of performing chemical plant protection treatments. A particular attention was paid to identifying the relationship between the direction of changes in the volume of chemical plant protection product consumption and selected attributes of farms. The main time range of the analyses covered the period of 2013-2017. Statistical data and results of representative surveys carried out on a sample of 1101 farms in Poland were used in the research process. Due to the large number of variants of the analysed variables, a multiple correspondence analysis was used, which made it possible to determine the correlation between the examined features (direction of changes in pesticide use relative to the farm area, economic size of the farm and location of the farm). Statistical analysis showed the existence of strong relationships between the physical (1) and economic (2) size of farms and the direction of changes in pesticide consumption ((1) φ2 = 0.0907; (2) φ2 = 0.1141)). According to empirical studies, the reduction of pesticide consumption took place mainly on the smallest farms. The implementation of the integrated plant protection directive has not resulted in significant changes in the form of reduced pesticide use in large-scale field crops. This raises the need to modify the strategy and model of crop protection in large-scale field crops in Poland.
