Bioavailability of dissolved organic matter in biogas slurry enhanced by catalytic ozonation combined with membrane separation

Recent developments in synthesis of attapulgite composite materials for refractory organic wastewater treatment: a review

Attapulgite clay, due to its unique crystalline hydrated magnesium-aluminium silicate composition and layer-chain structure, possesses exceptional adsorption and catalytic properties, which enable it or its composites to be utilized as adsorbents and catalysts for wastewater treatment. But the drawbacks of attapulgite are also very obvious, such as relatively low specific surface area (compared to traditional adsorbents such as activated carbon and activated alumina), easy aggregation, and difficulty in dispersion. In order to fully utilize and improve the performance of attapulgite, researchers have conducted extensive research on its modification, but few specialized works have comprehensively evaluated the synthesis, applications and challenges for attapulgite-based composite materials in refractory organic wastewater treatments. This paper provides a comprehensive review of controllable preparation strategies, characterization methods and mechanisms of attapulgite-based composite materials, as well as the research progress of these materials in refractory organic wastewater treatment. Based on this review, constructive recommendations, such as deep mechanism analysis from molecular level multi-functional attapulgite-based material developments, and using biodegradable materials in attapulgite-based composites, were proposed.

Influence of effluent particles and particle-bound micropollutants on the removal of micropollutants and UVA254 in wastewater effluent ozonation

This study systematically investigated the influence of effluent particles and activated sludge (AS) particles on the removal of micropollutants via wastewater effluent ozonation within typical effluent total suspended solids (TSS) concentrations. A series of batch experiments revealed that particle concentrations up to 30 mg/L had a minor impact on the removal of organic micropollutants (OMPs) in the aqueous phase. Moreover, the reduction of UV absorbance at 254 nm (UVA254) was negatively correlated to the level of particle concentration at ozone doses higher than 0.5 gO3/gDOC. It indicates that UVA254 abatement was more sensitive to the presence of particles compared to OMP removal. Organic micropollutants (OMPs) sorbed on effluent particles and sludge particles were extracted before and after ozonation. OMP sorption in effluent particles was 2-5 times higher than that in sludge particles. During the ozonation of raw secondary effluent, particle-bound micropollutants were removed comparably to the micropollutants in the aqueous phase. This suggests that the boundary layer surrounding the particle didn't affect the removal of OMPs in the particle phase. Furthermore, the removal of existing OMPs (irbesartan, sulfamethoxazole, and metoprolol) in the effluent was used to assess the ozone and •OH exposure. In water samples with and without particles, the elimination of OMPs could be reliably predicted (R² > 0.95) by calculated ozone and •OH exposures.

Preliminary Study on the Preparation of Conductive Nanosized Calcium Carbonate Utilizing Biogas Slurry by a Synchronous Double Decomposition Coating Method

Nanosized calcium carbonate (NCC) plays a vital role in the rubber and plastic fields as a filler, but it cannot resolve the electrostatic problem. Humic-acid-based NCC (HA-NCC) was accidentally discovered in the reaction between biogas slurry and calcium chloride (CaCl₂), based on nutrient recovery and gradient treatment technology to solve the biogas slurry problem. A preliminary study on the preparation of conductive nanosized calcium carbonate (CNCC) from the HA-NCC was implemented. Meanwhile, a synchronous double decomposition coating method was proposed to properly explain the formation of HA-NCC in the biogas slurry. The CNCC was further obtained through drying and carbonizing the HA-NCC sample. The morphology of CNCC was a square shape with aggregation, and its crystals were calcite. The C content of CNCC was 5% higher than that of the normal CaCO₃, implying a synchronous coating effect of soluble HA in biogas slurry on NCC. The weight loss of CNCC was about 2.5% at 630 °C, explaining why the HA-NCC remained black at 550 °C for 4 h. The CNCC was partly ordered and graphitized. The resistivity of the CNCC reached 2.62 × 10⁶ Ω·cm. It could be used as a conductive powder. In view of the favorable characteristics described above, CNCC would be expected to be a filler and antistatic agent for plastics and rubbers to enhance the tensile and bending resistance of polymer materials, while eliminating electrostatic hazards. The results are also of great significance for developing high-end products to realize resource utilization of biogas slurry.

Enhanced Yield of Large-Sized Ti3C2Tx MXene Polymers Nanosheets via Cyclic Ultrasonic-Centrifugal Separation

Water pollution has spurred the development of membrane separation technology as a potential means of solving the issue. In contrast to the irregular and asymmetric holes that are easily made during the fabrication of organic polymer membranes, forming regular transport channels is essential. This necessitates the use of large-size, two-dimensional materials that can enhance membrane separation performance. However, some limitations regarding yield are associated with preparing large-sized MXene polymer-based nanosheets, which restrict their large-scale application. Here, we propose a combination of wet etching and cyclic ultrasonic-centrifugal separation to meet the needs of the large-scale production of MXene polymers nanosheets. It was found that the yield of large-sized Ti3C2Tx MXene polymers nanosheets reached 71.37%, which was 2.14 times and 1.77 times higher than that prepared with continuous ultrasonication for 10 min and 60 min, respectively. The size of the Ti3C2Tx MXene polymers nanosheets was maintained at the micron level with the help of the cyclic ultrasonic-centrifugal separation technology. In addition, certain advantages of water purification were evident due to the possibility of attaining the pure water flux of 36.5 kg m−2 h−1 bar−1 for the Ti3C2Tx MXene membrane prepared with cyclic ultrasonic-centrifugal separation. This simple method provided a convenient way for the scale-up production of Ti3C2Tx MXene polymers nanosheets.

Catalytic Ozonation and Membrane Contactors—A Review Concerning Fouling Occurrence and Pollutant Removal

Membrane filtration has been widely used in water and wastewater treatment. However, this process is not very effective for the removal of refractory organic compounds (e.g., of pharmaceutical origin). Coupling membrane filtration with ozonation (or other Advanced Oxidation Methods) can enhance the degradation of these compounds and, subsequently, the incidence of membrane fouling (i.e., the major problem of membrane uses) would be also limited. Ozonation is an efficient oxidative process, although ozone is considered to be a rather selective oxidant agent and sometimes it presents quite low mineralization rates. An improvement of this advanced oxidation process is catalytic ozonation, which can decrease the by-product formation via the acceleration of hydroxyl radicals production. The hydroxyl radicals are unselective oxidative species, presenting high reaction constants with organic compounds. An efficient way to couple membrane filtration with catalytic ozonation is the deposition of an appropriate solid catalyst onto the membrane surface. However, it must be noted that only metal oxides have been used as catalysts in this process, while the membrane material can be of either polymeric or ceramic origin. The relevant studies regarding the application of polymeric membranes are rather scarce, because only a few polymeric materials can be ozone-resistant and the deposition of metal oxides on their surface presents several difficulties (e.g., affinity etc.). The respective literature about catalytic membrane ozonation is quite limited; however, some studies have been performed concerning membrane fouling and the degradation of micropollutants, which will be presented in this review. From the relevant results it seems that this hybrid process can be an efficient technology both for the reduction of fouling occurrence as well as of enhancement of micropollutant removal, when compared to the application of single filtration or ozonation.
