Cadmium transfer between maize and soybean plants via common mycorrhizal networks

Intercropping with Brassica juncea L. enhances maize yield and promotes phytoremediation of cadmium-contaminated soil by changing rhizosphere properties

Intercropping heavy metal hyperaccumulators and low-accumulating cultivars is a promising strategy for remediating contaminated soils without impeding agricultural production. A field plot experiment was conducted to explore the effects of intercropping maize with Brassica juncea L. on the rhizosphere microecological properties, plant growth and cadmium (Cd) accumulation. The results showed that the Cd bioaccumulation amount per unit area (BCAarea) of the intercropping system was 12.9% lower than that of the Brassica juncea L. monoculture but 87.5% higher than that of the maize monoculture. The grain yield of maize was increased by 10.5% through intercropping, and the land equivalent ratio (LER) was greater than 1. Soil available Cd in intercropped maize was 13.4% lower than that in monoculture maize but was 12.7% higher in intercropped Brassica juncea L. than in monoculture Brassica juncea L. Intercropping significantly increased the contents of malic acid and citric acid in the rhizospheres of maize and Brassica juncea L. The dominant microorganisms were similar in all studied soils but were different in relative abundance between the intercropping and monoculture treatments. These findings suggest that intercropping maize with Brassica juncea L. could be a promising approach for phytoremediation without reducing crop yield in Cd-contaminated soil.

Interplant carbon and nitrogen transfers mediated by common arbuscular mycorrhizal networks: beneficial pathways for system functionality

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are ubiquitous in soil and form nutritional symbioses with ~80% of vascular plant species, which significantly impact global carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) biogeochemical cycles. Roots of plant individuals are interconnected by AMF hyphae to form common AM networks (CAMNs), which provide pathways for the transfer of C and N from one plant to another, promoting plant coexistence and biodiversity. Despite that stable isotope methodologies (¹³C, ¹⁴C and ¹⁵N tracer techniques) have demonstrated CAMNs are an important pathway for the translocation of both C and N, the functioning of CAMNs in ecosystem C and N dynamics remains equivocal. This review systematically synthesizes both laboratory and field evidence in interplant C and N transfer through CAMNs generated through stable isotope methodologies and highlights perspectives on the system functionality of CAMNs with implications for plant coexistence, species diversity and community stability. One-way transfers from donor to recipient plants of 0.02-41% C and 0.04-80% N of recipient C and N have been observed, with the reverse fluxes generally less than 15% of donor C and N. Interplant C and N transfers have practical implications for plant performance, coexistence and biodiversity in both resource-limited and resource-unlimited habitats. Resource competition among coexisting individuals of the same or different species is undoubtedly modified by such C and N transfers. Studying interplant variability in these transfers with ¹³C and ¹⁵N tracer application and natural abundance measurements could address the eco physiological significance of such CAMNs in sustainable agricultural and natural ecosystems.

Reconditioning of plant metabolism by arbuscular mycorrhizal networks in cadmium contaminated soils: Recent perspectives

Cadmium (Cd) is one of the most perilous nonessential heavy metal for plants, owing to its high water solubility and obstruction with various physiological and biochemical processes. It enters food chain via plant uptake from contaminated soil, posing a grave menace to ecosystem and mankind. Green remediation comprises approaches intended at prudent use of natural resources for increasing profits to humans and environment. Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi are considered a promising green technological tool for remedial of Cd-polluted soils. They are naturally associated with root system of plants in Cd-contaminated soils, evidencing their tolerance to Cd. AM can decrease Cd uptake by plants broadly through two strategies: (1) extracellular mechanisms involving Cd chelation by root exudates, binding to fungal cell wall/structures or to the glycoprotein glomalin; (2) intracellular means involving transfer via hyphal network, detoxification and vacuolar sequestration mediated by complexation of Cd with glutathione (GSH), phytochelatins (PCs), metallothioneins (MTs) and polyphosphate granules. Additionally, mycorrhizal symbiosis facilitates reconditioning of plants' metabolism primarily through dilution effect, increased water and mineral uptake. Recently, AM-induced remodelling of root cell wall synthesis has been reported to improve plant vigor and survival under Cd stressed environments. The present article highlights Cd impacts on AM growth, its diversity in Cd contaminated soils, and variations among diverse AM fungal species for imparting plant Cd tolerance. The most recent perspectives on AM-mediated Cd tolerance mechanisms in plants, including cellular and molecular studies have also been reviewed for successful utilization of these beneficial microbes in sustainable agriculture.
