Towards a Commercial Parabolic Trough CSP System Using Air as Heat Transfer Fluid

High-Temperature Chloride-Carbonate Phase Change Material: Thermal Performances and Modelling of a Packed Bed Storage System for Concentrating Solar Power Plants

Molten salts eutectics are promising candidates as phase change materials (PCMs) for thermal storage applications, especially considering the possibility to store and release heat at high temperatures. Although many compounds have been proposed for this purpose in the scientific literature, very few data are available regarding actual applications. In particular, there is a lack of information concerning thermal storage at temperatures around 600 °C, necessary for the coupling with a highly efficient Rankine cycle powered by concentrated solar power (CSP) plants. In this contest, the present work deals with a thermophysical behavior investigation of a storage heat exchanger containing a cost-effective and safe ternary eutectic, consisting of sodium chloride, potassium chloride, and sodium carbonate. This material was preliminarily and properly selected and characterized to comply with the necessary melting temperature and latent enthalpy. Then, an indirect heat exchanger was considered for the simulation, assuming aluminum capsules to confine the PCM, thus obtaining the maximum possible heat exchange surface and air at 5 bar as heat transfer fluid (HTF). The modelling was carried out setting the inlet and outlet air temperatures at, respectively, 290 °C and 550 °C, obtaining a realistic storage efficiency of around 0.6. Finally, a conservative investment cost was estimated for the storage system, demonstrating a real possible economic benefit in using these types of materials and heat exchange geometries, with the results varying, according to possible manufacturing prices, in a range from 25 to 40 EUR/kWh.

Promising Nanoparticle-Based Heat Transfer Fluids-Environmental and Techno-Economic Analysis Compared to Conventional Fluids

Providing optimal operating conditions is one of the major challenges for effective heating or cooling systems. Moreover, proper adjustment of the heat transfer fluid is also important from the viewpoint of the correct operation, maintenance, and cost efficiency of these systems. Therefore, in this paper, a detailed review of recent work on the subject of conventional and novel heat transfer fluid applications is presented. Particular attention is paid to the novel nanoparticle-based materials used as heat transfer fluids. In-depth comparison of environmental, technical, and economic characteristics is discussed. Thermophysical properties including thermal conductivity, specific heat, density, viscosity, and Prandtl number are compared. Furthermore, the possible benefits and limitations of various transfer fluids in the fields of application are taken into account.

Energy Storage in Earth-Abundant Dolomite Minerals

Dolomite, a calcium magnesium mineral (CaMg(CO3)2), is considered an undesirable accompanying mineral in the phosphoric acid production process and, as such, large quantities of this mineral are available in Florida. This study is aimed toward the characterization of the high-concentration phosphatic dolomite pebbles (handpicked dolomites) received from the Florida Industrial and Phosphate Research Institute (FIPR) and investigate their feasibility for thermochemical energy storage (TCES). The chemical composition, structural and microstructural characteristics of commercial and handpicked dolomite minerals was studied using a variety of techniques such as X-ray Fluorescence (XRF), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and an automated mineralogy Automated SEM-EDX Mineralogy (or automated scanning electron microscopy) with energy dispersive X-rays spectrometer (SEM-EDX), which confirmed the phosphatic pebbles received contains dolomite (CaMg(CO3)2) phase in a high percentage. Particle size and the surface area were measured using XRD and N2 adsorption, the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) methods. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was used to determine the activation energy for the calcination and re-carbonation reactions of the dolomite pebbles in nitrogen (N2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) atmospheres at temperatures up to 800 °C. The present results exhibit, for the first time, the potential for using abundant, high phosphatic concentration dolomite possessing long-term cycling behavior for thermochemical energy storage applications in Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) plants.

Assessment and Evaluation of the Thermal Performance of Various Working Fluids in Parabolic Trough Collectors of Solar Thermal Power Plants under Non-Uniform Heat Flux Distribution Conditions

Changing the heat transfer fluid (HTF) is a viable approach to study the corresponding effect on the thermal and hydraulic performances of parabolic trough collectors (PTC). Three categorized-types of pure fluids are used in this study; water, Therminol® VP-1 and molten salt. The parametric comparison between pure fluids is also studied considering the effect of various inlet fluid temperatures and different Reynolds ( R e ) numbers on the thermal performance. Two low-Reynolds turbulence models are used; Launder and Sharma (LS) k-epsilon and Shear Stress Transport (SST) k-omega models. In order to assess the performance of each fluid, a number of parameters are analyzed including average Nusselt ( N u ) number, specific pressure drop distributions, thermal losses, thermal stresses and overall thermal efficiency of the PTC system. Results confirmed that changing the working fluid in the PTC enhances the overall heat transfer thereby improving thermal efficiency. For a temperature-range of (320–500) K, the Therminol® VP-1 performed better than water, resulting in higher N u numbers, lower thermal stresses and higher thermal efficiencies. On the other hand, for the common temperature-range, both Therminol® VP-1 and molten salt preformed more or less the same with Therminol® VP-1 case depicting lower thermal stresses. The molten salt is thus the best choice for high operating temperatures (up to 873 K) as it does not depict any significant reduction in the overall thermal efficiency at high temperatures; this leads to a better performance for the Rankine cycle. For the highest tested Reynolds number for an inlet fluid temperature of 320 K, a comparison of heat transfer performance (Nusselt number) and the overall thermal efficiency between Therminol® VP-1 and water showed that Therminol® VP-1 is the best candidate, whereas the molten salt is the best choice for a higher inlet temperature of 600 K. For example, at an inlet temperature of 320 K, the Nusselt number and overall thermal efficiency of therminol VP-1 were 910 and 49% respectively as opposed to 443 and 38% for water. On the other hand, at the higher inlet temperature of 600 K, these two parameters (Nusselt number and overall thermal efficiency) were recorded as 614 and 41 % for molten salt and 500 and 39 % for Therminol® VP-1.
