Pretreatment of alkali/surfactant/polymer (ASP)-flooding produced wastewater by electron beam radiation to improve oil-water separation

The management of wastewater produced from alkali/surfactant/polymer (ASP) flooding, known for its considerable volume and high emulsion stability, poses a challenge in oilfields globally. This study has demonstrated that ionizing irradiation is a promising pretreatment method for ASP wastewater to improve oil-water separation. After a settling time of 1 h, approximately 69.5% of oil remained in the raw ASP wastewater, while only 20-29% of the oil persisted in the liquid phase following radiation at absorbed doses ranging from 0.1 to 5.0 kGy. A noticeable increase in the size of oil droplets and reduction in turbidity was observed after irradiation. Further analysis revealed that the combination of surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and alkali exhibits a synergistic impact, leading to a substantial reduction in interface tension of ASP wastewater. Notably, ionizing irradiation induces several key changes that are crucial for efficient demulsification. The transformation of the wastewater's rheological behavior from pseudoplastics to a Newtonian fluid accompanied by a reduction in viscosity, the increased interfacial tension at both liquid-air and liquid-oil interfaces, along with the degradation of organic components such as partly hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) and SDS, all contribute to the coalescence and floatation of oil droplets.

A Review of Conventional and Innovative- Sustainable Methods for Cleaning Reflectors in Concentrating Solar Power Plants

The severe soiling of reflectors deployed in arid and semi arid locations decreases their reflectance and drives down the yield of the concentrating solar power (CSP) plants. To alleviate this issue, various sets of methods are available. The operation and maintenance (O&M) staff should opt for sustainable cleaning methods that are safe and environmentally friendly. To restore high reflectance, the cleaning vehicles of CSP plants must adapt to the constraints of each technology and to the layout of reflectors in the solar field. Water based methods are currently the most commonly used in CSP plants but they are not sustainable due to water scarcity and high soiling rates. The recovery and reuse of washing water can compensate for these methods and make them a more reasonable option for mediterranean and desert environments. Dry methods, on the other hand, are gaining more attraction as they are more suitable for desert regions. Some of these methods rely on ultrasonic wave or vibration for detaching the dust bonding from the reflectors surface, while other methods, known as preventive methods, focus on reducing the soiling by modifying the reflectors surface and incorporating self cleaning features using special coatings. Since the CSP plants operators aim to achieve the highest profit by minimizing the cost of cleaning while maintaining a high reflectance, optimizing the cleaning parameters and strategies is of great interest. This work presents the conventional water-based methods that are currently used in CSP plants in addition to sustainable alternative methods for dust removal and soiling prevention. Also, the cleaning effectiveness, the environmental impacts and the economic aspects of each technology are discussed.

n-GaAs diode with photoresponsivity based on 3-aminorhodanine thin films

In this paper, the electrical characteristics of a 3-aminorhodanine (aRh)/n-gallium arsenide (n-GaAs) heterostructure were investigated in dark and under various illumination conditions. Although the structure shows a low rectifying rate, the photocurrent in both the forward and reverse biasing increases with increasing illumination intensity. The photodiode exhibits a large detectivity (the capability of detecting visible light), approaching 3.9×10¹¹ Jones at room temperature. On illumination with light (100  mW/cm²), the current value in the aRh/n-GaAs heterostructure is 2.8×10⁵ times, when compared to its dark value at zero applied voltage. The obtained responsivity value at the bias of 2 V and under the illumination intensity of 100  mW/cm² is 0.16 A/W, which is high for any organic-inorganic hybrid photodiode. The photocurrent-to-dark-current ratio is 6.5×10⁴. Results show that an aRh/n-GaAs self-powered photodiode introduces new opportunities for dynamic systems needing partially low or zero external energy inputs.

Efficient steam generation by inexpensive narrow gap evaporation device for solar applications

Technologies for solar steam generation with high performance can help solving critical societal issues such as water desalination or sterilization, especially in developing countries. Very recently, we have witnessed a rapidly growing interest in the scientific community proposing sunlight absorbers for direct conversion of liquid water into steam. While those solutions can possibly be of interest from the perspective of the involved novel materials, in this study we intend to demonstrate that efficient steam generation by solar source is mainly due to a combination of efficient solar absorption, capillary water feeding and narrow gap evaporation process, which can also be achieved through common materials. To this end, we report both numerical and experimental evidence that advanced nano-structured materials are not strictly necessary for performing sunlight driven water-to-vapor conversion at high efficiency (i.e. ≥85%) and relatively low optical concentration (≈10 suns). Coherently with the principles of frugal innovation, those results unveil that solar steam generation for desalination or sterilization purposes may be efficiently obtained by a clever selection and assembly of widespread and inexpensive materials.
