Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the efficacy of ischemia-modified albumin (IMA), lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and visinin-like protein-1 (VILIP-1) in diagnosing chronic cerebral hypoperfusion (CCH). METHODS This retrospective study included 84 patients with suspected chronic cerebral ischemia admitted to Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital between February 2021 and April 2022. Arterial spin labeling (ASL) imaging and biological examinations were performed. According to the ASL perfusion imaging patterns, the patients were divided into a CCH group (n = 55) and a non-CCH group (n = 29). Serum markers of the two groups were compared, and correlation analysis was conducted between ischemic marker levels and cerebral blood flow (CBF) in the ischemic region, as measured by ASL. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to evaluate the efficacy of each marker for diagnosing chronic cerebral ischemia. The Delong test was used to compare AUC size between groups. RESULTS Compared to the non-CCH group, the CCH group exhibited higher IMA levels and lower BDNF concentrations (P < 0.05). However, VILIP-1 and Lp-PLA2 concentrations were not significantly different between the two groups (P > 0.05). Moreover, IMA and BDNF levels were not correlated with CBF in the hypoperfused area. ROC curve analysis demonstrated that the cut-off values of 24.2915 U/mL and 6.714 ng/L for IMA and BDNF achieved a sensitivity of 83.6% and 41.8% and a specificity of 62.1% and 93.1%, respectively. Lastly, the areas under the curve for IMA and BDNF were 0.738 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.627-0.848) and 0.631 (95% CI, 0.512-0.751), respectively. CONCLUSION IMA and BDNF may have clinical value in the diagnosis of CCH.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Radioiodine (131I) therapy (RAIT) is associated with oxidative stress (OS)-induced DNA damage in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC). The goal of this study was to evaluate the possible ameliorating effects of Panax Ginseng (PG) on RAIT-induced genotoxicity in patients with DTC. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty DTC patients who had received 131I (100 to 175 mCi) were enrolled in this study. The patients were randomly classified (n = 10) into control, placebo, PG1 groups (receiving 500 mg/day of PG for 2 days before RAIT), and PG2 group (receiving 500 mg/day of PG for 2 days before to 1 day after RAIT). Blood samples were collected before and 2 days after RAIT. Lymphocyte micronuclei (MN) frequency was measured using the MN assay. Serum total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) were measured using colorimetric assays. Serum albumin, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) were measured using commercial kits. RESULTS The mean of baseline MN frequency was the same in the four groups. RAIT increased the MN frequencies to at least three times the baseline values in the control (39 ± 5) and placebo groups (38 ± 6) (P < 0.001). PG caused a significant decrease in the MN frequencies in the treated groups compared to the control and placebo groups (P < 0.001). RAIT and PG administration had no significant effects on the serum IMA, TAC, and markers of liver and kidney toxicity. CONCLUSION PG could be considered a useful remedy for the protection against RAIT-induced chromosomal damage in DCT patients.

Abstract
Serum levels of ischaemia-modified albumin (IMA) have been studied as a novel and simple measure of oxidative stress (OXS) in different thyroid pathologies. However, results of available studies in the literature were not consistent. This meta-analysis was attempted to quantify the overall effect size for serum IMA levels in human hypothyroidism (HT) and hyperthyroidism (HYT) and to study its associations with the thyroid profile. Databases of PubMed/Medline, EMBASE, Google Scholar, Web of Science and Science Direct were searched for articles. Data on serum IMA levels in HT, HYT patients and euthyroid controls were extracted to compute standardized mean differences (SMD) by the random-effects model. The associations between IMA and thyroid profile were computed by the meta-analysis of correlation coefficients. IMA levels in HT patients (SMD=1.12; Z=2.76; P=0.006) and HYT patients (SMD=1.64; Z=2.57; P=0.01) were significantly higher than in euthyroid controls and the thyroid treatment showed a favourble effect on serum IMA levels. There were strong and significant correlations between IMA and hormonal status in HT and HYT groups. This meta-analysis showing increased IMA level in both HT and HYT patients and its association with thyroid profile suggests that serum IMA could be used as a simple measure of increased OXS in thyroid dysfunction.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES The main objective of this study was to evaluate the levels of ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) and malondialdehyde (MDA) in patients with subclinical (SHypo) and overt hypothyroidism (OHypo), and to assess the effects of levothyroxine (LT4) therapy on the oxidative stress (OS) parameters. We also investigated the relationships among serum thyroid hormones, lipid parameters, and IMA and MDA in these patients. DESIGN AND METHODS Thirty untreated patients with OHypo, 25 untreated patients with Shypo, and 30 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were prospectively included in the study. Biochemical and hormonal parameters including IMA and MDA were evaluated in all patients just before and one month after the maintenance of euthyroidism. RESULTS Compared with the control subjects, the levels of MDA and triglycerides (TG) significantly increased in patients with SHypo (p < 0.001 and p < 0.05, respectively), whereas high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels significantly decreased (p = 0.01). Patients with OHypo showed significantly high MDA, total cholesterol (TC), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and TG levels (p = 0.001, p < 0.01, p = 0.01, and p < 0.01, respectively), and significantly low HDL-C levels compared with the controls (p < 0.05). MDA levels and lipid profile were not significantly different in the patients with OHypo when compared with the patients with SHypo. Serum IMA levels did not significantly change in patients with OHypo and SHypo compared with the controls. In the pre-treatment period, MDA levels were inversely correlated with HDL-C levels in patients with OHypo (r: -0.471, p = 0.009). Plasma MDA and LDL-C levels significantly decreased and HDL-C levels significantly increased in the groups of OHypo and SHypo after LT4 treatment. Serum IMA levels did not significantly change with the therapy in all patient groups. CONCLUSIONS Increased MDA levels in both patient groups represent increased lipid peroxidation which might play an important role in the pathogenesis of the atherosclerosis seen in these patients. Increased OS in patients with SHypo and OHypo could be improved by LT4 treatment. Also, MDA can be used as a reliable marker of OS and oxidative damage, while IMA is considered to be inappropriate.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Free radical-mediated oxidative stress (OS) has been implicated in the pathogenesis of thyroid disorders. The ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) has been proposed as a marker of protein oxidative damage, which has been found to reflect hypoxic stress. AIM Our aim was to evaluate IMA, malondialdehyde (MDA), and reduced glutathione (GSH) levels in patients with overt hypothyroidism (OHT) and subclinical hypothyroidism (SHT) in comparison to euthyroid controls. SUBJECTS AND METHODS Albumin, IMA, IMA/albumin ratio, MDA, GSH, total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), HDL-Cholesterol were assessed in 105 subjects grouped into OHT, SHT patients, and euthyroid controls with 35 subjects in each group. RESULTS MDA and IMA levels were significantly elevated while the GSH concentrations were significantly lower in OHT and SHT patients compared to controls (p < 0.01). When IMA values were normalized for albumin concentrations, the IMA/albumin ratio was also significantly elevated in both patient groups compared to controls (p < 0.01). These changes were more pronounced in the OHT group when compared to SHT group. In OHT group, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels showed significant positive correlation with MDA (r = 0.470, p = 0.004), IMA (r = 0.530, p = 0.001), and IMA/albumin ratio (r = 0.525, p = 0.001). Both IMA (r = -0.342, p = 0.041), IMA/albumin ratio (r = -0.378, p = 0.023) showed significant negative correlation with GSH in OHT patients. No significant correlation between variables was, however, observed in SHT group. CONCLUSIONS Increase of MDA and IMA levels with decreased antioxidant status indicate the presence of OS in hypothyroid patients, which was more pronounced in OHT patients. Elevated levels of IMA can be a clinically useful marker of protein oxidative damage and OS in hypothyroidism.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oxidative stress inhibits albumin's ability to complex with cobalt. Feline serum-cobalt binding has not been described. OBJECTIVES The objective was to develop a cobalt binding test for use with feline serum, and correlate the results with other biochemical and cellular constituents in blood, and with clinical diseases of cats. METHODS A colorimetric test of cobalt binding, based on the oxidation-reduction reaction of Co(+2) and dithiothreitol, was developed using feline serum. The test was used to measure cobalt binding in stored serum from 176 cats presented to the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital for a variety of disease conditions. Time-matched hematology and biochemical data, and clinical information, were obtained from the medical record of each cat and correlated with the serum-cobalt binding results. RESULTS Serial dilution of feline serum with phosphate-buffered saline resulted in a highly linear decrease in serum-cobalt binding (r(2) = .9984). Serum-cobalt binding of the clinical samples also correlated with albumin concentrations in a stepwise linear regression model (r(2) = .425), and both cobalt binding and albumin were significantly decreased in cases of inflammation. Albumin and cobalt binding also shared significant correlations with several erythron variables, and serum concentration of total calcium and bilirubin. CONCLUSIONS The correlation of cobalt binding measured by a colorimetric test with albumin concentration in the clinical samples and with serum dilution is consistent with feline albumin-cobalt complex formation. Hypoalbuminemia is the likely cause of reduced serum-cobalt binding in inflammation and the correlations observed between cobalt binding and other variables.

Abstract
Oxidative stress results from either overproduction of free radicals or insufficiency of several anti-oxidant defense systems. It leads to oxidation of main cellular macromolecules and a resultant molecular dysfunction. Thyroid hormones regulate oxidative metabolism and, thus, play a role in free radical production. Studies evaluating oxidative stress in patients with hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism have been encountered in recent years; however, oxidative status in patients with euthyroid autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT) was not investigated previously. Thirty-five subjects with euthyroid AIT and 35 healthy controls were enrolled in the study. Serum oxidative status was determined by the measurement of total anti-oxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS), ischemia-modified albumin (IMA), and oxidized-low density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) levels. Serum TAS levels were significantly lower (p<0.001), while serum TOS levels and IMA levels were significantly higher (p<0.001 and p=0.020, respectively) in patients compared to controls. In both groups, ox-LDL levels were similar (p=0.608). Serum TAS levels were negatively correlated with anti-thyroid peroxidase and anti-thyroglobulin (anti-TG) levels (rho=-0.415, p=0.001 and rho=-0.484, p<0.001, respectively). Serum TOS was positively correlated with anti-TG levels (rho=0.547, p<0.001). Further, TAS was positively correlated with free T4 levels (r=0.279, p=0.043). No correlation was observed between thyrotropin, free T3 levels, and TOS and TAS levels. These results suggest that oxidants are increased, and anti-oxidants are decreased in patients with euthyroid AIT, and oxidative/anti-oxidative balance is shifted to the oxidative side. Increased oxidative stress might have a role in thyroid autoimmunity.

Forty-five untreated patients with overt hyperthyroidism (OHyper), 20 untreated patients with subclinical hyperthyroidism (SHyper) and 30 age-and sex-matched healthy controls were prospectively included in the study. Biochemical and hormonal parameters were evaluated in all patients before and after treatment. Compared with the control subjects, the levels of MDA, glucose and TG were significantly increased in patients with SHyper (p<0.05), whereas LDL-C levels were significantly decreased (p<0.01). Patients with OHyper showed significantly elevated MDA and glucose levels (p<0.001) and significantly decreased LDL-C and HDL-C levels compared with the controls (p<0.01). In patients with Graves' disease, serum TSH levels were inversely correlated with plasma MDA levels (r: -0.42, p<0.05). Plasma MDA levels significantly decreased and levels of TC, LDL-C and HDL-C significantly increased in the groups of OHyper and SHyper after treatment. Serum IMA levels did not significantly change at baseline and with the therapy in all subjects. In conclusion, increased MDA levels in both patient groups represent increased lipid peroxidation which might play an important role in the pathogenesis of the atherosclerosis in these patients. Increased oxidative stress in patients with SHyper and OHyper could be improved by ATD therapy. Also, MDA can be used as a reliable marker of OS and oxidative damage, while IMA is considered to be inappropriate.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A novel ischemia marker named ischemia modified albumin was previously considered as an early marker of myocardial ischemia, however due to recent reports, its contribution was demonstrated in different pathologies such as oxidative stress, diabetes, stroke and cancer. We aimed to investigate the relation between oxidative stress and thyroid dysfunctions determining IMA levels since IMA is closely related with increased oxidative stress. METHODS A total of 88 individuals were participated in this study: 34 cases in hypothyroid, 27 cases in hyperthyroid and 27 cases in euthyroid group. Ischemia-modified albumin levels were measured by albumin cobalt binding test and thyroid hormone levels were determined with electrochemiluminescent method. RESULTS Ischemia modified albumin levels were significantly decreased in hypothyroid group compared to hyperthyroid and euthyroid groups (p < 0.001). In hyperthyroid individuals ischemia modified albumin levels were higher compared to euthyroid ones (p < 0.001). Ischemia modified albumin was negatively correlated with TSH levels (r = -0.473, p < 0.001), and positively correlated with FT4 and FT3 levels (r = 0.496, p < 0.001 and r = 0.275, p = 0.010, respectively). CONCLUSION We suggest that albumin adjusted IMA levels are significantly lower in hypothyroid group than hyperthyroid and euthyroid groups.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) for predicting major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) patients. DESIGN AND METHODS A prospective observational study was conducted with 120 CAPD patients and 37 healthy volunteers. Demographic and clinical data were collected. The primary end point is the occurrence of MACE. RESULTS A total of 157 participants with a mean age of 43.64 years finally completed this study. The CAPD patients had a significantly high rate of MACE (P=0.001) and high levels of IMA than healthy controls (P<0.001). Compared with CAPD patients with normal levels of IMA, the CAPD patients with high levels of IMA (>85 kU/L) had lower non-MACE survival rate (P<0.001), which indicated that the high IMA CAPD patients may suffer a high rate of MACE. In addition, the high IMA CAPD patients also had a low level of serum albumin (P<0.001) and hemoglobin (P=0.018). The correlation analysis showed that the serum albumin level was the most effective factor influencing IMA (B=-0.967, P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS CAPD patients with high levels of IMA had a high incidence rate of MACE. IMA was a good predictive marker of MACE and might be important in cardiovascular risk stratification of CAPD patients.
