Abstract
Endometriosis is a frequent, chronic, estrogen-dependent and inflammatory gynecological disease leading to pain and infertility. Clinical and metabolic studies reveal that patients with endometriosis are susceptible to hyperlipemia and lipid dysfunction, putting them at ascending risk of cardiovascular diseases. Statins constitute a group of cholesterol-lowering drugs with pleiotropic effects. A plethora of researches have proved their ability to inhibit the growth of ectopic lesions in endometriosis. However, concerns exist about their possible adverse effects on ovarian function. This study aimed to investigate the possible effect of atorvastatin on the ovarian endocrine function and fertility capacity in the prevention and treatment of endometriosis. Here, 5 mg/kg atorvastatin was intraperitoneally injected to the endometriosis mice once a day for consecutive fourteen days during and after the development of endometriotic implants. The results indicated that atorvastatin not only led to regression of the ectopic lesions, but also caused no discernible harm to the ovary for both the preventive and the therapeutic models. In addition, it elicited a protective effect on the ovarian reserve and fertility possibly by reducing inflammation in the ovary. Hence, atorvastatin could be a promising drug for endometriosis prevention and treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Ovarian torsion is a gynecological disorder that causes ischemia-reperfusion injuries in the ovary. Our study investigated berberine's short- and long-term effects on ovarian ischemia-reperfusion injuries. METHODS This study included 28 Wistar albino female rats weighing 180 to 220 g, which were divided into four groups: sham (S), torsion/detorsion (T/D), torsion/ detorsion+single dose berberine (T/D+Bb), and torsion/detorsion+15 days berberine (T/D+15Bb). The torsion and detorsion model was applied in all non-sham groups. In the T/D+Bb group, a single dose of berberine was administered, while in the T/D+15Bb group, berberine was administered over a period of 15 days. After the rats were euthanized, their ovaries were excised. The left ovaries were used for histopathologic evaluation, which included ovarian injury scoring and follicle count, while the right ovaries were used for biochemical analyses (tissue transforming growth factor-β [TGF-β] and alpha-smooth muscle actin [α-SMA] levels). RESULTS The histopathologic evaluation scores for the ovaries were significantly lower in the T/D+B group (p<0.05) and the T/D+15B group (p<0.005) than in the T/D group. The follicle counts in the T/D group were lower than those in both the sham and treated groups (p<0.005). The TGF-β levels were significantly lower in the T/D+15B group (p<0.005), whereas the α-SMA levels did not show a significant difference. CONCLUSION Both short- and long-term berberine use could potentially have therapeutic effects on ovarian torsion. Long-term berberine use exhibited anti-inflammatory effects by reducing TGF-β levels, thereby preventing ischemia-reperfusion injuries. Therefore, we suggest that long-term berberine use could be beneficial for ovarian torsion.

Abstract
The aim of this experimental animal study was to investigate the histopathological and biochemical efficacy of trimetazidine (TMZ) in decreasing ovary damage in an ovary ischaemia/reperfusion (I/R) model in the rat. A total of 35 Wistar albino female rats were randomly separated into five groups, n = 7 per group: Group 1: Sham (S) was only given a laparotomy procedure. Group 2: Ischaemia (I) group with 2-hour ischaemia using a vascular sutur. Group 3: Ischaemia/Reperfusion (I/R) group with 2 hour ischaemia and 2-hour reperfusion. Group 4: Sham + 10 mg/kg orally TMZ (S + TMZ). Group 5: I/R + 10 mg/kg oral TMZ (I/R + TMZ) group with 2 hours ischaemia and 2 hours reperfusion after the administration orally 10 mg/kg oral TMZ. Two daily doses of TMZ were orally administered to Group 4 (S + TMZ) and Group 5 (I/R + TMZ) for three days. TMZ significantly decreased vascular congestion, haemorrhage, and polymorphonuclear leukocyte infiltration in group 5 compared to group 3 (p < .05). Despite TMZ decreased the malondialdehyde, total oxidant status, and oxidative stress index values, these decreases were not statistically significant (p > .05). TMZ which is an antioxidant agent can efficiently prevent in I/R damage in rat ovaries but further studies are necessary in order to implement it in the clinical settings.IMPACT STATEMENTWhat is already known on this subject? Adnexial torsion is the most common gynecological emergency and there are no specific clinical, laboratories, or radiological findings for adnexal torsion. Unfortunatelly, the currently accepted treatment is adnexal detorsion. Cytoprotective effects of Trimetazidine (TMZ), an antianginal drug, are well-defined and it has been demonstrated to improve oxidative stress markers and limits membrane damage induced by reactive oxygen species and protects tissues from free radicals with its antioxidant effects. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of TMZ in experimentally induced adnexal torsion in rats and to investigate possible effects in maintaining ovarian reserve to prevent I/R damage or reperfusion damage. What do the results of this study add? Our study showed that TMZ significantly decreased vascular congestion, haemorrhage, and PMNL infiltration. TMZ decreased the malondialdehyde, total oxidant status, and the oxidative stress index values, but these decreases were not statistically significant. What are the implications of these findings for clinical practice and/or further research? Although various antioxidant drugs and chemicals have been used to protect the ovaries against I/R damage, they have not been demostrated to prevent it completely. TMZ, an antioxidant efficacy agent, has been shown to prevent ovarian I/R damage by suppressing inflammation in terms of histopathological parameters. Further studies involving a greater number of experimental animals are required before using TMZ for the treatment of humans with I/R damage in the clinical setting.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVE To quantitatively evaluate the blood flow in ovaries (ischemic ovaries) that underwent torsion using indocyanine green angiography (ICGA) and assess the use of ICGA as an indicator for functional preservation of the ovaries. DESIGN In vivo animal study. SETTING The University of Yamanashi Animal Experimentation Center. SUBJECTS Eighteen female Wistar albino rats. INTERVENTIONS As an alternative to ovarian torsion, we occluded an ovary in each rat for 24 hours, after which we performed ICGA before and after releasing ischemia and extracted the following 8 parameters: Fmax (maximum F value before releasing ischemia); Tmax (time taken from the onset of an increase in F to reaching Fmax); T½max (time taken from the onset of an increase in F to reaching half of Fmax); slope (Fmax/Tmax); time ratio (T½max/Tmax); F'max (maximum F value after releasing ischemia); reperfusion rate (F'max/Fmax); and reperfusion gap (F'max - Fmax). Four weeks later, we counted the total number of primordial and primary follicles and classified the rats into functional and nonfunctional groups. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS On the basis of the total number of primordial and primary follicles, 13 rats had "functional" ovaries on the clamped side, and 5 rats had "nonfunctional" ovaries. The area under the curve values for each parameter were as follows: Fmax, 0.908; Tmax, 0.569; T½max, 0.546; time ratio, 0.746; slope, 0.877; F'max, 0.723; reperfusion rate, 0.938; and reperfusion gap, 0.862. CONCLUSION ICGA can be used to quantitatively evaluate ovaries that have been subjected to ischemia, and the magnitude of fluorescence intensity can be an excellent predictor of ovarian necrosis. Quantifying the degree of reperfusion immediately after the release of ischemia can be an equally excellent predictor of necrosis.

Abstract
As an environmental contaminant, Benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P; BaP) disrupts the antioxidant signaling and thus leads to the induction of oxidative stress and the damage of DNA in the ovary. low-dose atorvastatin (ATV) has antioxidant and anti-apoptotic properties. The present study aimed to survey the effects of prenatal exposure to BaP on ovarian toxicity and also to investigate the protective role of ATV in reducing ovarian toxicity. In this study, rats were divided into seven groups: control, ATV (10 mg/kg), oil, BaP (10 and 20 mg/kg), and ATV + BaP (10 and 20 mg/kg). BaP and ATV were administrated from gestation day 7-16 (GD7 to GD16), orally. 10 weeks after the birth, female offsprings were examined for oxidative stress markers, sex hormones, ovarian and tubular tissue structure, and the apoptosis markers. Data showed that BaP significantly reduced glutathione, increased malondialdehyde level, and disrupted the tissue structure of the ovary. Moreover, estrogen and progesterone levels significantly decreased in the offsprings rats. Also, BaP increased caspase-3 immunoreactivity. Atorvastatin treatment along with BaP in the embryonic period were able to bring the antioxidant status and sex hormones levels relatively close to normal. Besides, histological findings showed that atorvastatin was able to improve ovarian and oviduct abnormalities caused by BaP. Based on the above studies be concluded that atorvastatin in the embryonic during was able to reduce ovarian damage caused by BaP with antioxidant and anti-apoptotic properties.

Abstract
AIM Ovarian torsion is a gynecopathology that requires emergency surgery in women. However, ischemia reperfusion injury (IRI) occurs after treatment with detorsion. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of monoacylglycerol lipase inhibitor JZL184 on ovarian IRI and ovarian reserve. METHODS Forty-eight female Wistar albino rats were divided into six groups. Group 1: Sham, Group 2: Ischemia, Group 3: ischemia/reperfusion (IR), Group 4: IR + JZL184 4 mg/kg, Group 5: IR + JZL184 16 mg/kg, Group 6: IR + vehicle (dimethyl sulfoxide). Three hours of ischemia followed by 3 h of reperfusion. Two different doses of JZL184 (4 and 16 mg/kg) were administered intraperitoneally in Group 4 and 5, 30 min before reperfusion. Ovarian IRI and ovarian reserve were evaluated in serum and tissue by using histopathological and biochemical parameters. RESULTS Treatment with JZL184 was associated with a significant increase in ovarian 2-arachidonoylglycerol and improved serum anti-Mullerian hormone, İnhibin B, primordial follicle count, and ovarian histopathological damage score (p < 0.05). JZL184 treatment significantly decreased the level of malondialdehyde, and increased superoxide dismutase enzyme activity and glutathione (GSH) levels (p < 0.05). The increased phosphorile nuclear factor-κB (Phospho-NF-κB-p65), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-1beta (IL-1β), transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-β1), and TUNEL assay immunopositivity scores in ovarian I/R injury were decreased after treatment with JZL184 (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS JZL184 showed significant ameliorative effects on ovarian IRI and ovarian reserve caused by IR through acting as an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiapoptotic agent. Thus, JZL184 may be a novel therapeutic agent for ovarian IRI.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Etanercept has been widely used in autoimmune diseases for blocking tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), which is an inflammatory cytokine. The anti-apoptotic and anti-inflammatory effects of etanercept against ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury have been shown for several tissues in rat studies, but to the best of our knowledge, there are no reports on its protective effects following similar injury in ovarian tissue. The aim of this study was to investigate whether etanercept has beneficial effects on ovarian I/R injury, as well as on ovarian reserve. MATERIAL AND METHODS Twenty-four rats were randomly divided into four groups (n = 6/group): sham (laparotomy only); sham + etanercept; I/R; and I/R + etanercept. Ischemia was induced for 3 h by twisting the ovary, and 24 h after detorsion the ovarian tissues were collected to evaluate histopathologic changes, glutathione (GSH), malondialdehyde (MDA), myeloperoxidase (MPO), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) concentrations for oxidative stress, 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) for DNA damage, caspase-3 activity for apoptosis and ovarian follicle counts. To measure anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH), serum samples were drawn before and after surgery. RESULTS Tissue GSH and SOD levels were significantly higher, while MDA and MPO levels were significantly lower in the I/R + etanercept group than in the I/R group (p < 0.05, p < 0.01, respectively). Tissue 8-OHdG and caspase-3 activity were significantly lower in the I/R+etanercept group than in the I/R group (p < 0.05, p < 0.01, respectively). Preoperative and postoperative AMH levels were compared and there was a significant reduction in the I/R and I/R + etanercept groups (p < 0.001, p < 0.001). The reduction of AMH in the I/R + etanercept group was significantly lower than in the I/R group. The primordial, preantral and small antral follicle numbers were also significantly higher in the I/R + etanercept group compared to the I/R group (p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p < 0.005, respectively). CONCLUSIONS Etanercept attenuated inflammation and related oxidative stress and also helped to preserve ovarian reserve following ovarian I/R damage.

Abstract
PURPOSE Kidneys are exposed to ionizing radiation during radiotherapy in patients with abdominal malignancy. The aim of this study is to investigate the protective effect of atorvastatin (ATV) against ionizing radiation-induced nephrotoxicity in mice. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty male BALB/c mice were randomly divided into six groups (10 mice per group); control, irradiation (IR), IR plus ATV (10, 20 and 50 mg/kg) and only ATV (50 mg/kg). ATV groups received ATV for seven days via oral gavage before exposure to IR. Animals were exposed to 2 Gy whole body of X-ray on day 8. After exposure to IR, biochemical, histological and immunohistological assays were performed. RESULTS ATV significantly decreased the level of oxidative stress biomarkers in irradiated mice in comparison with IR alone. A significant reduction in the urea and creatinine levels was observed in ATV plus IR group compared to IR alone. Tubular degeneration, glomerular atrophy, interstitial expansion and fibrosis were observed in irradiated mice. Tubular degeneration and atrophy in the kidneys of IR plus ATV group were less than IR group. In addition, pre-treated animal with ATV significantly showed reduction in caspase-3 immunoreactivity. CONCLUSION ATV has significant protective effect against radiation-induced nephrotoxicity in mice and is a promising medication for protection of patients during radiotherapy.

Atorvastatin mitigates cyclophosphamide-induced hepatotoxicity via suppression of oxidative stress and apoptosis in rat model. Res Pharm Sci 2018; 13:440-449. Abstract
Cyclophosphamide (CP), as a chemotherapy drug, induces hepatotoxicity through causing oxidative stress. Atorvastatin (ATV) at a low dose has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The present study was designed to investigate the protective effects of ATV against CP-induced hepatotoxicity in rat. In this experimental study, 32 rats were treated with ATV orally at a dose of 10 mg/kg for 10 consecutive days, 5 days before and 5 days after the administration of a single intraperitoneal injection of CP (150 mg/kg). The hepatoprotective effect of ATV was evaluated by measuring liver function markers, oxidative markers, histological and immunohistochemical assays. The biochemical results showed that administration of CP increased hepatic biomarkers enzymes as aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels. CP increased malondialdehyde (MDA), protein carbonyl (PC) and decreased glutathione (GSH) content in rats. Moreover, administration of CP was associated with periportal leucocyte infiltration, dilation sinusoids, hepatocyte vacuolation, congestion and hemorrhage in livers of rats. CP significantly increased immunoreactivity of caspase-3 as a marker of apoptosis in liver tissue. ATV markedly mitigated liver injury through reduction in oxidative stress biomarkers, histopathological findings and apoptosis. The antioxidant and anti-apoptotic activities of ATV are main proposed mechanisms involved in its hepatoprotective effects against CP-induced hepatic injury.
