Abstract
BACKGROUND In hallux valgus, morphological changes and functional weakness of intrinsic foot muscles occur, especially in the abductor hallucis muscle. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to investigate how a conservative treatment with the addition of neuromuscular electrical stimulation affects the volume and strength of the muscle, the correction of deformity, passive range of motion, pain, and disability. METHODS Twenty-eight female participants (48 feet) were randomly assigned to two groups. The interventions included orthoses and exercise (Ortho) in both groups. One group received additional neuromuscular electrical stimulation of abductor hallucis muscle to activate it. Each group received the treatments for one month and was assessed two times, at baseline before starting and after one month of treatment. Mixed within-between ANOVA, analysis of covariance, and nonparametric tests were used for data analysis. RESULTS The muscle volume, abduction strength, goniometric angle, and passive hallux dorsi/plantar flexion showed significant changes in both groups (p < .001). Subscales of the foot and ankle ability questionnaire, significantly changed (p ≤ .05). Pain decreased significantly in the two groups (p < .001 and p = .02). Intermetatarsal angle did not significantly differ between the two groups (p = .86, partial eta effect size = 0.001). But, the hallux valgus angle mean (on MRI) in the Ortho group was less than that of the orthoNMES group (p = .007, partial eta effect size = 0.15). CONCLUSION Both groups showed nearly identical treatment effects in the primary volume and hallux valgus correction outcome measures. In this study, adding neuromuscular electrical stimulation did not have an additional effect compared to conservative in the treatment of hallux valgus. Abstract
Background: The muscle volume considerably changes with aging, pathologies, mechanical loading and exercise, and immobilization. It is recognized as an important parameter that can be measured by various methods to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions focusing on muscle strengthening and function. However, before the application of any measurement method, their reliability needs to be investigated and established. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the inter- and intra-rater reliability of the manual measurement method of the abductor hallucis muscle volume in feet with hallux valgus deformities using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Patients and Methods: The MRI images of the feet of 15 samples with a hallux valgus deformity were selected in this study. The cross-sectional areas of the abductor hallucis muscle were measured in the cuts along the entire length of the foot and multiplied by slice thickness. Two trained raters performed the measurements. The second rater repeated the measurements after five days to eliminate the memory effect. The intra-rater reliability and inter-rater reliability were assessed based on the intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC (2, 1)] to evaluate the extent of agreement between the raters at a 95% confidence interval. Results: The between- and within-rater ICCs were 0.92 (0.79 - 0.97) and 0.99 (0.97 - 0.99), respectively. The standard error of measurements was also small in both inter-rater (6.2%) and intra-rater (2.1%) reliability analyses. Conclusion: The manually outlined slice-by-slice volume measurement of the abductor hallucis muscle based on MRI images showed excellent inter- and intra-rater reliability. The excellent intra-rater reliability, besides the lower standard error percentage of measurements, indicates the superiority of measurements by a single person. However, further studies with a larger sample size are recommended.

Abstract
PURPOSE In the present study, we aimed to determine the relationship of HV angle with angles and measurements obtained from lateral and anteroposterior (AP) radiological images of the foot in individuals with HV. METHODS The present study had a retrospective design, and the participants consisted of 66 female patients between the ages of 19 and 64 who applied to Orthopedics and Traumatology and were diagnosed with Hallux valgus. Metatarsus adductus angle, metatarsus primus adductus angle, hallux valgus angle, hallux interphalangeal angle, metatarsal break angle, first metatarsal protrusion distance, metatarsal width, talocalcaneal angle, AP Meary's angle were measured on AP view and calcaneal inclination angle, talar declination angle, lateral talocalcaneal angle, first metatarsal declination angle, fifth metatarsal declination angle, navicular height, lateral Meary's angle, tibiotalar angle were measured on a lateral radiograph. The IBM SPSS 21.0. program was used for statistical analysis, and the level of significance was taken as p < 0.05. RESULTS There were statistically significant differences between the right and left feet in MPA and AMA measurements. The results showed that HV angle (HVA) had a weak relationship with MAA and MW, as well as a moderately positive relationship with MPA. However, it had a moderately negative relationship with AMA and a weak negative relationship with HIPA. CONCLUSION We believe that in addition to the HVA angle, MPA and AMA angles should be considered in the diagnosis of HV, especially as the HVA angle is moderately positively correlated with the MPA angle and moderately negatively correlated with the AMA angle.

Abstract
PURPOSE Accuracy in diagnosing osteoarthritis in the midfoot using weightbearing plain radiography (WBPR) remains questionable due to the overlapping osseous architecture present, occluding visualization. Weightbearing computed tomography (WBCT), providing clearer bony landmark identification and joint space visualization, can also be used for evaluation. The aim of this project is to perform a standardized retrospective intra-patient analysis identifying the discrepancy of midfoot osteoarthritis diagnosis and osteoarthritis severity grading between WBPR and WBCT. METHODS AND MATERIALS A cohort of 302 patient feet was acquired from an internal, consecutive patient database using detailed inclusion criteria. The musculoskeletal radiologist interpretation of the WBCT and WBPR of each specimen was then assessed for any direct diagnosis or mention of osteoarthritic signs in specific articulations of 3 midfoot joint groups (Chopart, "central", and tarsometatarsal). WBPR sensitivity and specificity metrics were calculated with WBCT considered the gold standard for comparison. RESULTS From the WBPR radiologist interpretation, we found diagnostic sensitivity of 72.5 % and specificity of 87.9 % for Chopart joints; 61.5 % sensitivity, and 96.1 % specificity for central joints; and 68.4 % sensitivity, and 92.9 % specificity for tarsometatarsal joints. The severity of degenerative changes was also consistently underestimated when interpreted from WBPR relative to WBCT. CONCLUSIONS In this series, midfoot osteoarthritis was often undetected on WBPR. WBCT imaging facilitates an earlier, more reliable diagnosis and grading of midfoot osteoarthritis relative to WBPR.

Abstract
The hallucal sesamoid bones (HSBs), having an important role in reducing load per unit area on the first metatarsal head, can be injured commonly which also affected the first metatarsophalangeal joint and the surrounding structure. Meanwhile, differences among each HSB type may be a major factor affecting the occurrence and development of HV. So far, many researchers had learned that there are three different conditions in hallucal sesamoid bone affecting the choice of clinical surgery corresponding to different solutions in clinic. Thus, it is necessary to study the anatomical morphological characteristics of the HSB which can be helpful in clinical diagnosis and treatment, especially hallux valgus (HV). 150 X-ray and three-dimensional (3D) computed tomographic (CT) images consist of 72 left and 78 right metatarsals were applied in this anatomic study between two variables and showed by a simple scatter plot. The first metatarsophalangeal joint is divided into four different types: type I (no HSB, 1.3%), type II (with one HSB, 0.07%), type IIIa (with two HSBs when THB is bigger, 28%), type IIIb (with two HSBs when FHB is bigger, 65.3%), and type IV (with three HSBs, 4.7%). There was no statistical difference between the left and right sides, except HVA, Meary, and pitch (P < 0.05); all a, b, c, d, and i have statistical difference between male and female (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, HVA and IMA and HVA and type group have a significant correlation. In summary, HVA and IMA and HVA and classification of HSBs have significant correlations. The classification and location of HSBs can be an important basis to choose operation methods and postoperation evaluation.

Abstract
Objective To assess the accuracy of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the diagnosis of hallux valgus using radiography during weight bearing as the gold standard. Materials and Methods This was a retrospective analysis of all patients undergoing MRI of the foot and radiography of the foot during weight bearing at our institution between January and June of 2015. The hallux valgus angle (HVA) was measured on MRI and radiography. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test and simple linear regression were used in order to compare measurements. Patients were divided into two groups according to the HVA determined on radiography: > 15° (hallux valgus) and ≤ 15° (control). Qualitative and quantitative assessments of MRI scans were performed. For quantitative assessment, receiver operating characteristic curves were used in order to determine the HVA cutoff with the highest accuracy. Results A total of 66 MRI scans were included, 22 in the hallux valgus group and 44 in the control group. Wilcoxon signed-rank tests indicated a significant difference between the radiography and MRI measurements. Simple linear regression showed a nonlinear relationship between the measurements and values did not present a strong correlation. In comparison with the radiography measurements, MRI with an HVA cutoff of 16.4° exhibited the highest accuracy (86%). The accuracy of the subjective (qualitative) assessment was inferior to the objective assessment (measurement of the HVA). Conclusion Hallux valgus can be diagnosed by measuring the HVA on MRI, satisfactory accuracy being achieved with an HVA cutoff of 16.4°.
